@kisvarday reminded me that this week is the 5 year anniversary of our preliminary location scout camping trip for Swiss Army Man where we went up and down the West coast seeing every beach and forest we could. Got lost a lot, had some food stolen by raccoons (which inspired the moment where the raccoon got shot in our film), and saw some of the most beautiful places in the country. Snatch | Directed by Guy Ritchie | Many have called Guy Ritchie the English Tarantino. Clever Plotting. Cool dialogue. Crime. Rich Settings. Colorful Characters. And I could probably agree with them for the most part, however, where Guy strayed from his wheelhouse of early films, (Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, Revolver, RocknRolla) and moved on to such films as King Arthur and Aladdin, QT has kept it pretty 100 with only films he’s written. That said, there is no doubt that Guy Ritchie is a visionary and one helluva director himself and who knows if he even wanted or liked those QT comparisons. Those are big shoes to fill. However, I like Guy the most when he’s doing films like this. Snatch is highly-stylized masterpiece that takes place in the London criminal underworld. Much like his first film, Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels, Snatch has intertwined plots and a cast of insanely entertaining and funny characters with names like One Punch Mickey, Boris the Blade, Franky Four Fingers, Brick Top and Bullet-Tooth Tony. Brad Pitt, as One Punch Mickey, is especially good, probably the best he’s ever been, coming hot off his Fight Club physique and devouring the role of an Irish Boxer known for knocking out his opponents in a single punch. He is without a doubt the funniest he’s ever been. The film also stars Benicio Del Toro, Jason Statham, Lennie Jamies Goldie, Vinnie Jones and host of other English actors you’ve for sure seen since. There are different reasons why we do gossip... - we use gossips in order to engage a conversations, in order to be apart of a conversation...basically in order to create a social bonding, in order to not feel left-out. . - gossiping provides humans with the opportunity to compare ourselves to others. . - gossiping can create a sense of self-importance for the gossiper (like he or she has access to information that others aren’t, elevating them in status). . - gossiping make us to feel better about ourselves because by talking negatively of other people we think that our own pains, insecurities and struggles arent that bad. Its a form of projection. . So basically there is NOTHING good in gossiping..doesnt help your personal growth and social growth too..it just build mistrust because the person you are talking to would leave the conversation thinking that in the end you would gossip about them too (and prob you would). Sometimes it is inevitable to talk about people..but there is always a way to talk about people without gossiping. . . . You can talk about other people as long as is not at their expanses..anything you think/feel is putting the people you are talking about down, can stay out of the conversation. Secondly, once find yourself in a gossip conversations, speak up and steer the conversation towards another direction (even tho you are new to this, screw who says you always do that.)You have the rights to change. You dont need to do that, you are not meant to. In the midst of the swirling shit show that is our country right now, it’s easy to forget that we are stoking all versions of that chaos with each of our Facebook likes, credit card swipes, and Google searches. And as long as we give our data away freely and without an understanding of the consequences of our participation in an “attention economy” we reward and prop up billion-dollar corporations, bad actors, and power-hungry politicians for spreading misinformation and deepening our current social and political divide. There are far too many conversations that need to be had about racism, white privilege, police reform, economic disparities, political corruption, women’s rights, immigration reform, and protections for the LGBTQ community, to name only a few, to remain idle. The digital realm is an incredibly important space to hold these conversations, to educate ourselves, and to foster change. But until we see real reform within the data industry, our efforts will be sullied and our divisions depended by bad actors who spread misinformation and algorithms that subdivide us into smaller and smaller echo chambers. Let’s demand more from an industry that makes billions every year by tracking and repackaging our every digital move to sell to folks who want to control the way we spend our money and behave in our ever-crumbling democracy.
