My first Olympic memory was as a 7 year old, being woken by Mum at 3am to watch the Opening Ceremony of the ‘72 Munich Games on the small B&W TV. I was mesmerised by it all, especially with Shane Gould’s performance in the pool. So every 4 years to Montreal ‘76 & Moscow ‘80, I’d be glued to the TV in awe at these athletes. My dream to photograph an Olympic Games was born in ‘84 with the magic of the LA Games, again especially the swimming. I’d just finished Year 12 and collected all the SMH Olympic Extras (that I still have today) examining every image closely, with a goal to one day get my own Olympics Page 1 photo, and if possible, from the pool covering the Swimming events that I loved. 16 years later, after 7 years on staff for Fairfax I was picked to cover Swimming and Track & Field for the Sydney Games from a team of 65 photographers. I was one step closer. On Day 3 of the Games, before heading back out to the pool, my dream from LA ‘84 was finally realised. Entering the Media Village for breakfast at 6.30am to see a stack of Heralds with my photo of Ian Thorpe on Page 1. В этих условиях было важно держать ровный темп и не допускать ошибок. So i was going to post a couple of these today just as throw back Thursday and make fun of my hair from 13 years ago, because we all have bad hair right now. I had the privilege of working with these legends in the pictures plus a few that are not. That first one is from when we won @tales_of_the_cocktail worlds best cocktail bar back in 2007. Audrey, I cant say thank you enough for taking a chance on a plucky Brit. I learned more than j realised there was to learn, and in the words of Yoda, I had to unlearn what i had learned up to that point in my career. Bars are so much more than drinks, from the folks who prop of the bar once a week or once a year who want a beer or a Manhattan, to the people serving them. Audrey lived and breathed this ethos and irs one of the many things a took away from it. Thank you very much Audrey, and thank you @peguclub_nyc you are very much going to be missed. Loving seeing everyone’s memories of #mysydney2000 .... yesterday was 20 years ago that I brought the Olympic flame into Bondi Beach as part of the Torch relay - the day before the opening Ceremony for the Sydney Games. I was 14 years old and I had one of the most visible legs of the relay in a city full of Olympic fever. There were thousands of people lined on the cliffs watching the flame come in, not to mention the air and sea escort we had of people trying to get close to it. I had never seen anything like it and I had no clue what I was actually doing until I saw the crowds. I passed the torch around when we got to North Bondi so we could all take it in. And of course, we decided we should catch a wave, much to the horror of all the helicopters covering it for tv. These boats are a quarter of a tonne and we needed to wait for one big enough, plus we knew we only had one chance. After waiting for a while we chose one - when it was apparent we were going to catch it the crew started yelling at me. Stand up!! Get up!! Which resulted in the photo here that went a little bit around the world. I hit the beach and the crowd went nuts, broke the barricade and rushed me, resulting in my assigned security team having to come in to get me and drag me through it. To this day probably the most surreal experience of my life. And I still have the torch. Even though it was not one of my best result it’s the one performance from the Australian IRONMAN championships at Foster-Tuncurry that I remember most fondly. After a terrible ride where I got dropped from the pro pack, I was not where I wanted to be off the pace with 30km to go. I had to think positively so I sat up for the final 30k and took on an ANZAC cookie at each aid station and made sure I drank a lot and released the back. Coming into T2 I thought my race was completely over but to my amazement I had some good legs and ran from outside the top 20 into 8th place holding off a fast finishing David Meade. What an honour it was to have Michael Schmidt visit our farm. Were super excited to get started on his new book: Raw Milk and the Search for Human Kindness- Overcoming Fear and Complacency. At its core it asks the fundamental question of liberty and right to choose. Its a battle for small farmers to provide you with good food because of the endless regulations put in place by interest groups who use fear to control people and policy in the name of safety. If you want a govt stamp on all your food to certify its been through the industrial food fraternity, thats up to you. Were not asking for that program to be shut down. All we want is for Canadians who honour heritage foods to have the right to buy from any farmer they choose. If you only knew the bureaucracy BS we have to go through to sell a chicken or eggs- maybe well do a winter series about this?
