A continuación cuentos varios sobre diseñar la escenografía para @losmiserablesvzla y fotos acompañantes, en orden variado de algunas de las situaciones de esta locurita de mi querida @claudiacsg: se me quedan cortas las formas de darte las gracias. FOTO1. LA SOMBRA DE LA BARRICADA. Tenía pesadillas con ella, me rompió 4 pantalones, tengo una cicatriz en el brazo derecho que me la recordará por algún tiempo. El día que subió al escenario y estaba ELLA ahí… toda lista (después de 4 o 5 ajustes… en realidad fueron como 15) sonreí… estaba ella toda espléndida, echando el cuento que tenía que echar. FOTO2. DENTRO DE LA BARRICADA. La tomé en la tarde que la estábamos ensamblando, para que no se me olvidara que esa vista dentro de la barricada sería el privilegio de unos pocos y que yo fui la primera en estar parada allí (pequeño momento egocéntrico). También la tomé porque esa tarde éramos un gentío trabajando juntos… unos de un lado y otros del otro lado (y si, me refiero a lo político) y a todos nos quedó bella la barricada (dejo esa metáfora por ahí y me retiro lentamente) FOTO 3. MIS ZAPATOS. Descripción gráfico-metafórica de cómo quedé física y emocionalmente después de este proyecto. FOTO 4. FOTO DEL EMPIRE STATE. Obviamente no es el Empire State, pero así le decían de “cariño” por ser el edificio más alto. Te defendí hasta de mí… pero tenías razón: trasladabas al público en una mirada a donde tenías que trasladarlos. FOTO 5. LA CARRETA. Dedicada a ti mi querido @marianodetry... ¡qué trabajo que nos dió! es la perfecta metáfora para este proceso… de a ratos parecía que estaba lista y que todo estaba bien… y de pronto ¡zas! algo no funcionaba (o se rompía) y había que recalcular-arreglar-rehacer. Gracias por la paciencia milenaria. Gracias a los queridos Jesús Viloria y Máximo Sánchez, que la hicieron, repararon, re-pensaron, re-hicieron y la re-repararon todas la veces que fueron necesarias. This one is dedicated to deceased artist @danielweissbach_ who is getting buried today. We only met 3 times in the last 2 years. Because of his art. He gave me pictures of his selfmade tools and some good shots of his crazy urban works for two shows and a catalogue. We talked for hours. We had sympathie for each other. We discovered that he knew some old friends of mine he visited once in Paris when we were both young. We wanted to see us again, we wanted to have a walk together. He was already very sick. We stayed in touch texting trying to find a moment before #getwelldaniel. Then Corona and difficult times. And then Daniel left us. So we didn’t have that walk. Finally got round to doing up my fairly knackered bathroom. Floors up, wormed and rotten timber replaced and treated and floor levelled. Existing plumbing mayhem ripped out and replaced and then it all made nice. Thanks much to @heatherroselander for the old (1971) blue suite that’s now reconditioned. Also skip salvaged rubber floor tiles from the #Dalsouple factory in Bridgy, Somerset and a new wet wall material I’ve developed that ain’t #mirrl but it is nice. Big hats off to @six_feet_high_and_rising and @jrewen78 for epic skills and efforts helping sort it out. 🥳 (Snag alert! If you spot them you can win the opportunity to fix them! Today has been rough. The morning started with a concerned neighbor saying were not doing enough to keep people apart. Then in the afternoon we were told we are being (bleep) ridiculous and silly for asking everyone to be 2m apart. We take every feedback and concern to heart because we must be mindful of them. Any feedback is a given chance to change and be better. Sometimes, we arent given those opportunities so we are grateful no matter what. We know these unexpected encountered will increase in number as each day goes by. It will have an effect on our cafe in person and online. We can only hope for the best that people understand all these changes we put in place. Thankfully, each day we also receive words of support and love from yall. Así, tras haber sido evaluado por la Policía Local, el Ayuntamiento procederá al corte del tramo de la avenida de Valvanera comprendido entre su cruce con la calle Bebricio hasta Avenida de los Ángeles; y del también será cortado el cruce entre las calles Ramón Subirán y Antonio Machado. Los cortes se producirán durante la entrada al centro, de 8:45 a 9:15 de la mañana. Durante la salida del centro: Mes de septiembre, de 12:45 a 13:15 Resto del curso, de 13:45 a 14:15. El hecho de que en septiembre el corte se adelante una hora se debe a que durante este periodo existe horario reducido. Además, se va a proceder a realizar una reserva de espacio en la zona de estacionamiento cercana y de forma permanente en la Avenida de los Ángeles de manera que se amplíe el espacio peatonal para garantizar espacios más amplios ante la importante confluencia de alumnos junto con sus padres, madres o tutores, durante las entradas y salidas del centro. Somos conscientes de que estos breves cortes de tráfico van a suponer molestias para los vecinos de la zona por lo que pedimos disculpas de antemano. This is a great sculptural painting from the 1980s by an artist named Jack McCarthy. Its a vacuum-formed fiberglass surface with automotive paint. I know these paintings were very toxic and took a toll on him. It hangs in the School of Music on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Jack was a tough old bastard and a complete badass artist. He shouldve been famous. Pope Clement later beatified and granted her the title of Blessed.⠀ Bernini was 71 years old when he began the work, and it was one of his last sculptures.⠀ The figure of Ludovica Albertoni is presented on a mattress at the moment of mystical communion with God. The folds of her habit reflect her state of turmoil, and her head is thrown back onto an embroidered pillow supported by a headrest. How is it that a perfectly circle hole-punch can never quite cut a vegetable perfectly round? Look closely, every single circle has some lop-side or bend. Vegetables, days after they’re harvested, still find ways to morph and squirm once they’re cut and released from the tension that holds them together. These are the things I think about as I’m punching out dozens of butternut squash, to be coated in a dashi powder and then dehydrated. So what do you do when nature won’t let you have perfect circles? Fight it? Try a different technique? What if you just give it what it wants—let it happen. Maybe the squash will be happier, and someone will taste it, and then they’ll be happier. Maybe not. Those that know me, know that I’m a man of few words and seemingly fewer emotions. I try not to let things bother me and when they do, I find a way to press on; to work through it. I also find challenge in celebrating life’s successes. When I opened up Broken Spanish more than 5 years ago, I remember inviting my parents in as our first guests. They were so proud of me. So happy to be eating in my restaurant, a goal that I had been working on for 20 year. At one point my Dad looked at me and said, “Mijo how does it feel to have your dream come true?” I paused, having never thought of it that way. But, instead of honoring the accomplishment and living in the moment, all I could see was what was wrong. Tables that wobbled, hvac issues, dishes that weren’t quite right. Nothing was ever good enough. Now that I have had to make one of the most difficult decisions of my professional career, I look back and realize how right my father was. My dream had come true. With the love and support of my family and through the hard work and dedication of my team, we lived the dream every day. Broken Spanish was more than a restaurant, it was a family. Together we pushed each other to be the best ambassadors of a cuisine and culture that up to that point had been so often overlooked, underappreciated and underrepresented in the culinary community. Like with many of the best dreams however, Broken Spanish has unfortunately come to an abrupt end. As we close our doors it is not just with sadness but with tremendous gratitude for all that have come out to support us throughout the past five years.
