Today we lost a legendary human @keithhufnagel - I met Keith some years ago. I was fortunate enough to bartend the grand opening of the original HUF store on Fairfax. From day one he was so kind to me and my staff. Our friendship grew closer over the years and as so many others have mentioned, the support that he gave to all of us is unmeasurable. I’ll miss being able to ride in the golf cart with him for 3 of 4 hours getting that free knowledge of business and life. Keith would always have the best advice. Even a couple months back he asked me when I was gonna open a restaurant in The Dena because he thought my food was tasty. I’ll miss you my friend. New golfer, new gains 🤙 Here’s the 2.5 month progression with my student Chase. He’s been working with me on his golf swing since the last week of June. He came to me with your typical above average golfer’s tendencies. Issues begin straight away in the takeaway. Too much forearm roll with a lack of wrist hinge, which pulls the clubhead inside, flat and behind him. From there, he stands the club up very late through supination of the lead forearm, causing him to get quite a bit across the line. The natural pattern you’ll see from there is a steep shaft in the early part of the downswing, followed by a very late shallowing move where the lead side of the body elevates (his specific shallowing mechanism). Chest stops turning, club drops underneath the plane, and then you’re swinging too far from inside-out. Blocks, hooks, big time stall of the body and tons of timing required where the golfer has to flip the hands in order to save it. Nothing like that now with his new move. No more forearm roll in the takeaway. He’s able to retain his arm structure to the top so the shaft alignment is in a very functional spot for his length of swing. From there, the club shallows early and therefore he’s able to retain his body tilts and not elevate the lead side so much in the downswing. Body keeps turning through impact, clubhead does not get “stuck” behind him and he’s able to rely on less timing. More neutral club path. More passive release, and a much tighter dispersion. One thing you’ll notice is that he doesn’t have a lot of wrist set early, and creates that hinge in transition. Sometimes it causes him to get narrow and throw off his sequence marginally, but that will be cleaned up shortly. Really happy with the work he’s put in.
