Suicide rates for male doctors is 1.41 times higher than the general male population, and rates for female doctors is 2.27 times greater than the general female population (American Journal of Psychiatry). Hari ini saya lelah. Berangkat pagi, poli pasien banyak, visite pasien no covid banyak, visite pasien covid lebih banyak lagi. Pulang, malamnya masih praktek lagi... Bawaannya diem. Bersembunyi di balik senyum palsu pura2 bahagia dan tegar sembari dalam hati mengelus dada. Lantas ada bapak2 bawa koper masuk ke praktekan. Pasien. Bawa seplastik gede jambu kristal. Hasil bumi kata beliau. Tak lupa kami ucapkan terima kasih. Dan ini tidak sekali dua kali, sering banget siomay, sekardus durian, sekotak tahu petis, roti, kue basah bikinan sendiri, pisang setandan, cake ultah, souvenir oleh2 dari traveling, sekotak gede jenang, setoples kering tempe, peyek kacang dan hasil bumi lainnya mampir ke poli ini. Unless you are a nurse or you’ve sat at a bedside watching a devoted nurse work for 12 and a half continuous hours to care for your loved one, it’s hard to grasp what this noble profession entails and how it breathes life into others. Contrary to medicinal and societal advancements, we’ve got a long way to go when it comes to understanding the unique and pivotal role nurses play in patient care. I come from a culture like many others where the taboo stands that nursing is a woman’s profession. There are others that reduce the profession to someone who only renders hygienic duties. It’s important to educate and show the world the behind the scenes. I don’t mean sharing filtered pictures. I mean sharing narratives. Such as the nurses that perform 3-4 hour dressing changes on complex burn patients, the nurses titrating medications drop by drop to keep a dying person’s heart barely alive, the midwife who stands all night to assure the birth of a new born, and yes, the nurse that cleans your loved one multiple times a day and night to restore their dignity while you return home in confidence that they will be okay and taken care off. I’m talking about the unsung heroes. So yes, we clean our patient’s bowel movements, clean up their vomit, bathe them when they are incapacitated, but we also love them like our own families, we also wipe away tears, we also pray with them, we also console fearful families, we also speak up and give them a voice and empower them. How do I look? Does it matter? . . I wish it didnt. Recently, in my dermatology clinic Ive had patients coming in with complications from using products trying to change their appearance. One lady wanted to lighten her skin and used a product which caused a severe rash and left her with patchy pigmentation. Another with problems following using a tattoo type treatment. . . My patients tell me they wish they were lighter/ darker/ less hair/ less redness etc etc. Its mostly women but men have these issues too. . . I help where I can, but the solution is wider? Why is society so hung up on appearance? Im guilty of it too and try and post pictures where I look half decent. When younger I also wanted to fix so many things about my looks and I usually wear make up when out to hide flaws. . . 🤔Como é a cirurgia da vesícula ? Quando se encontra cálculos ou pólipos na vesícula, geralmente o tratamento é cirúrgico. A cirurgia consiste na retirada da vesícula biliar com os cálculos no seu interior, podendo ela ser realizada por via laparotômica (aberta), por videolaparoscopia, por mini-laparoscopia (trocateres de 2 e 3mm), por “single Port” (todos os trocateres por uma única incisão na cicatriz umbilical) ou por cirurgia robótica. Todas essas abordagens acima variam apenas na via de acesso, trauma cirúrgico e cicatriz no pós-operatório, pois a cirurgia sempre será a mesma. Quando a cirurgia ocorre sem intercorrências, poderá ser realizada pelo cirurgião geral ou pelo cirurgião do aparelho digestivo. Contudo, caso haja passado de icterícia (pele e olhos amarelos), suspeita de tumoração ou mesmo nas reoperações é aconselhável que essa cirurgia seja realizada por um cirurgião do aparelho digestivo, pois se forem necessárias correções de complicações ali existentes através da exploração cirúrgica das vias biliares, retirada dos gânglios linfáticos na presença de tumor ou mesmo correção de lesão biliar em cirurgia previa, requer experiência extra para evitar complicações graves. “Today is the saddest day of my life. As a doctor, I have handled so many pregnant women in labour and I pray to God to bless all mothers each time I am in the delivery room. The pain women go through is indescribable and this does not include the 9 months they spent carrying the baby. They go through a lot just to bring forth new life. Today I cried bitterly because I lost a woman. We dont pray for things like this to happen but sometimes God may have other plans. Why is this womans case so painful? She has been barren for 14 years! We have tried IVF and so many other methods. The woman went through a lot. Finally, God blessed her. It was way beyond science and human knowledge. She became pregnant despite having ovarian cyst and a huge load of fibroids. Her fibroid started melting and everything was OK. I know that God will do things just to show off His glory and awesomeness. After 9 months, it was time, her husband rushed her to the hospital and I quickly left everything I was doing and attended to her. She laboured for hours. After 7 hours it was so painful that we decided to open her up. We lost her but the baby was alive,. Before her death, she held the baby in her arms and smiled God is great and then she gave up the ghost. I was devastated and sad. I went to broke the news to her husband myself. Her husband fainted upon hearing the news. Their happy day just turned sour. We lost a life to deliver a new life. Please respect women because they pass through the valley of death to bring life. Respect your wife. I personally was a Healthcare Studies major at UTD because they offered different tracks for pre healthcare professions and I was able to take the pre dental track. This allowed me to take most of the recommended prerequisites prior to dental school while also taking electives that pertained to the healthcare field. Aside from that, Biology or science is typically ideal because it can really help you take the recommended classes for dental school without taking additional courses that arent needed for dental school, but if there is something that really sparks your interest such as psychology or business! would definitely say to go for it! Patients with this condition have muscle weakness to spectrum of severe complications. As this was a very high risk pregnancy with the patient having severe proximal muscle weakness she was planned for elective Lower Segment Caesarian Surgery under regional aesthesia. The surgical team consisted of Dr. Radhamoni, Dr. Vinitha, Dr. Girija, Dr. Jean and Dr. Neethu as anaesthetist. Prenatal work up was done to check whether her husband was a carrier and as he was not a carrier for pompe disease invasive test was not offered as the baby will not be affected as the condition is an autosomal recessive disorder. Mother was continued on #enzyme #replacement #therapy throughout pregnancy and baby can be breast fed too. The genetic team includes Dr Sheela Namboothiri, HOD, Department of Pediatric Genetics, along with Dr Dhanya and Dr Shwetha. Ocrevus • I remember someone telling me that your first relapse is equally hard to your initial diagnosis. “Ok Debbie Downer”, I thought... until that dreaded day in March 2020 when they found that first new lesion since diagnosis. F@ck! BUT I DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. MS you play dirty. • We made a plan for a new drug that had lots of promising results (#ocrevus)... but COVID. Taking out my B cells while a new coronavirus was circulating the area was not in the cards for me so I started on an bridge drug (#tecfidera). • Unfortunately the bridge drug did not agree with me. Week by week I felt more and more ill. It got to a point that that I could not function normal anymore. 12 vails of blood later and the results were in: my lymphocytes were down in the 200s and my liver enzymes were in overdrive. I was pissed and angry and frustrated. “Your body needs a break”... Scary yet glorious words. But we needed a long term plan of action... • After much discussion with my neurologist, he believed that getting control of my disease was the priority and that with the correct measures in place we could make this work... • So here we are, exactly 6 months since the discovery of that new lesion, a new beginning in my MS journey. I was scared to walk onto that onology floor for my treatment. I was worried about the unknown. “Let’s talk about ‘Periods’. Yes, you read it right! If a female cannot talk comfortably about her periods, how can we expect the society to? Fortunately, I am blessed with a family where I can freely talk about it, and dont have to keep my pain wrapped in a black polythene bag. This happened on a hot, humid afternoon in May. It was the first day of my 3rd COVID duty rotation. I was posted in a ward having 30 patients, some of them in critical condition. I donned my PPE, entered the ward, and started my routine work of checking patients. I was feeling a little bloated, and had a slight pain in my lower abdomen. Yes, I was nearing the end of my menstrual cycle and was ‘prepared’ for it; but, I was praying that my periods should not start during my 6 hour duty, since the PPE alone was enough to make one uncomfortable and dehydrated. Half an hour later, one of the patients started feeling breathless. As I got up from my chair and approached the patient, I realized that my periods said ‘hello!’ to me. I had sudden cramps in my abdomen- a situation all girls can relate to! I checked the vitals of the patient and tried to stabilize him. The patient was worsening… so were my cramps. Finding another resident doctor to replace me would have taken almost an hour, and wasted one more PPE. I didnt want to leave my patient unattended for such a long time. I told myself, ‘Ill bear the cramps’. After 15-20 minutes, the patient’s vitals improved; I went back to my chair, rested for a while and continued my duty. I had to endure the pain and bleeding for 5 out of the 7 days of duty. The scorching heat and the PPE, aggravated the discomfort. But, like all other female healthcare workers, I did my job. Girls, PMS and periods are tough. But were tougher, right? Functioning with pain makes us braver. Our REPARE team is always hard at work making sure that the biomedical equipment at SBH is in good working order. Recently, the autoclave in our surgery department stopped functioning. Our Chief Biomedical Equipment Engineer, Alix Ilophene, told us: “We know that to do surgery, sterilizing equipment is necessary. Without that, there is no surgery. It was not so difficult to diagnose the problem. The [autoclave’s] boiler displayed a low water alarm—we found the machine’s water piping was blocked. We cleaned it, and then cleaned the whole machine. We took about two hours to repair it.
