The last photoshoot I did before Rona’ killed my buzz was appropriately with my favorite muse @gregcassese Let’s talk direct sunlight for a second: When I first started shooting, I shot exclusively in natural light. Common photography 101 dictates that the prime weather for shooting is overcast, because clouds soften and spread the natural light. True, but don’t be scared of the clear sunny days. I love direct sunlight because it allows me to push my shutter speed higher than usual and close my aperture more than I would normally! You get hard lines, fun details in the shadows, and, if you have the right person in front of your camera, you get grit! Next time it’s clear and sunny, try bringing your ISO to its minimum, and speeding up your shutter! For this months edition of #NASRetake, we take a look at the work of #nasalumni, Todd Fuller (@fuller_todd) ‘I first came to the National Art School as a 17-year old during the HSC intensive program, which proved a highly transformative experience. When I am in the studio, or teaching a class, or even just talking about drawing, the words of my lecturers still guide me. My love of drawing was incubated here, where I learned to see this art form as a religion, a science, a language, a symphony and a way of life’. (Fuller, 2018) Fuller graduated from NAS in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture (Honours). He now teaches drawing at NAS, as well as lecturing, curating and performing on campus. His practice combines animation, sculpture, drawing, performance and painting, yet is still very much underpinned by his love of drawing. The work Chapel (with whom I was united by every tie), is a recent work depicting the roof of the Chapel, the central building on the NAS campus. The drawing is one from a series made for Fuller’s animated film about the life and death of Darlinghurst Gaol prisoner Andrew George Scott, known as Captain Moonlite. The chapel represents a view seen by Moonlite at the gaol. The building was designed by Mortimer Lewis and built in 1847-72, and was originally designed as a surveillance tower for the gaol. However it was soon realised that guards would be vulnerable in a central tower. Its usage was changed to be a chapel and bathhouse, and its floor plan forms a perfect circle. Today the former chapel is used by the Drawing Department as a studio space. Stay tuned for more on Fullers work on our page! Loved making this wig 😍 I was obsessed with the idea of shooting this from behind to give the model an anonymous identity . I wanted to go a step further than just covering the face and making a mask style piece .Instead I wanted to do all my detailing at the back of the head . The whole idea behind this wig was to create a distorted face as a focal point where the back of the head would normally be . I wanted the models body to look as though it was twisted around . I embroidered this whole piece with bright tones of hair and was inspired by the style of some of Picasso’s work when it came to the initial design concept . I used a variety of shapes to create the face, one thing I didn’t want was for the face to be too obvious at first sight. Never got a chance to share that I graduated from MICA with an MFA in design. A major reason I did this was to start teaching and today, I taught my first official class at UMBC! I’m teaching motion graphics. Forever grateful for the professors I had that inspired me see the world differently and expand my understanding of what’s possible. Artists behind the scenes.... Back when we intended to display LPOE as a physical exhibition, artist @jahdayfordesign sketched out some ideas of how we could incorporate light into the space.. After we had to rethink and adapt these ideas, Jahday made an experiment out of foam; @studio_morison then scanned this into our world, and with the help of unreal Engineerings @danielchilds89 the glowing, incandescent orb of Nexus Valley was born. Images 1&3: initial sketches of how to bring light into the exhibition. Whilst we had great plans involving hanging lanterns, incorporating a gravity defying orb into the virtual LPOE meant there were no restrictions in terms of size, how many we could place in the world and where we could put them. Image 2: One of Jahdays glass artworks that he brought into an early Future20 session. This inspired us to explore themes of organic chaos, manifestation and breaking out of moulds... These themes are apparent with @mysensoryartyworld s plastic bag monsters that seem to be growing out of control in Black Light. At the beginning of the year, we toyed with the idea of creating light sources that looked similar to this piece. Image 4: Jahdays foam creation, much like the plastic bag monsters, has a life of its own. When sprayed, it expands beyond control and forms its own shape before setting; every foam piece is unique. Due to the pandemic, Jahday wasnt able to access his glass studio which led to his experimentation with foam; this resulted in the strange object that now acts as a light source in LPOE.
