The Siberian Unicorn (Elasmotherium) reproduction sculpture 😲 Credit: Blue Rhino Studio Elasmotherium is a genus of large rhinoceros endemic to Eurasia during the Late Pliocene through the Pleistocene, existing from 2.6 Ma to at least as late as 39,000 years ago in the Late Pleistocene. A more recent date of 26,000 BP is considered less reliable. Three species are recognised. The best known, E. sibiricum, or Siberian unicorn was the size of a mammoth and is thought to have borne a large, thick horn on its forehead. Theories about the function of this horn include defense against predators, attracting mates, driving away competitors, sweeping snow from the grass in winter, and digging for water and plant roots. Like all rhinoceroses, elasmotheres were herbivorous. Unlike any other rhinos, its high-crowned molars were ever-growing. The known specimens of E. sibiricum reach up to 4.5 m (15 ft) in body length with shoulder heights over 2 m (6 ft 7 in) while E. caucasicum reaches at least 5 m (16 ft) in body length with an estimated mass of 3.6–4.5 tonnes (4–5 short tons), based on isolated molars that significantly exceed those known from the Siberian species. Against the odds: The very last one of the 2020 leatherback babies and its very special story: Station Coordinator exhumed the last leatherback nest a couple of days after the hatchlings had emerged from the nest. As is customary per the investigation protocol, he opened the remaining unhatched eggs to document the stage of development of the embryo. This little one was at stage 4, almost fully developed and with the sack attached... and alive. Haji kept the little hatchling safe for 4 days and it managed to absorb the yolk sack and survive. Today it was released to the Sea. A happy ending for this little one and for the season. Although we wrapped on the 2019-2020 cold-stun season two weeks ago, we are continuing to provide medical treatment for sick and injured sea turtles year-round. Our Animal Health and Rescue teams have just admitted two turtles for rehabilitative care! Tulum, a mature Kemp’s ridley, was rescued off the coast of Delaware a few weeks ago. Tulum is currently being treated for symptoms of lethargy and positive buoyancy, which impacts a turtle’s ability to dive and swim. Meet our newest patient, Elvin! At 7:30 p.m. last night, the Sea Turtle Care Center team received a call from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources about a stranded juvenile green sea turtle on James Island unable to dive. Elvin was transported to the Care Center where he was triaged by our vet staff. Hes completed the first step in his journey home, rescue, and is now resting as he starts the rehabilitation process. One of our turtle care experts, Jess, has just picked up this big beautiful hawksbill sea turtle in need of urgent care. This gorgeous creature arrived on an @airnz flight this morning, after having been found washed ashore in the Bay of Islands in a very weak state. . Sadly, sea turtles face a myriad of threats in the ocean that can leave them sick and fighting for their lives. The reason this particular turtle has washed ashore in this state is unknown. Jess is currently at @aucklandzoo with this critically endangered hawksbill, where a medical assessment will be conducted. . El Centro de Conservación de Manatíes del Caribe en la Universidad Interamericana recibió el pasado domingo una tortuga marina con una herida en su cabeza. La tortuga de especie peje blanco (Chelonia mydas) y de tan solo 6 libras de peso, fue rescatada por el Cuerpo de Vigilantes del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales en la playa Las Criollas del pueblo de Barceloneta, quienes la transportaron expeditamente al centro veterinario localizado en el Recinto de Bayamón de la Inter. La tortuga juvenil con un trauma intracraneano producto de lo que parece ser un traumatismo penetrante en el cráneo, actualmente presenta un compromiso del globo ocular y la glándula de sal. El día de ayer se realizó una radiografía la cual no nos mostró con claridad la penetracion de la lesión, motivo por el cual el día de hoy se realizó un CT scan para poder evaluar la verdadera condición del animal y si había más compromiso de órganos, la interpretación inicial parece que no hay compromiso del encéfalo sin embargo estamos en espera de la opinón de un especialista en imagenologia veterinaria. Por lo pronto se ha mantenido un poco débil aunque letárgica, ha recibido tratamiento de termoterapia, terapia tópica, antibióticos, fluidos y analgesia. Esta paciente se encuentra en cuidado crítico. Estamos en espera de evolución para poder dar un diagnóstico. Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing you to the #weirdandwonderful species that our current Africa Fellows are working on. First up… The Madagascan big headed turtle, Erymnochelys madagascariensis, is endemic to western Madagascar living in lowland waterways and wetlands, with much of the population living outside of protected areas. As its name suggests, this turtle has a head that is much larger in comparison to its body size, and with a yellow colouration in parts they can often appear to have gold armour over its head and body. The turtles have a varied diet, with adults feeding upon molluscs and plants, but can also scavenge on dead animals. The females will lay an average of 13 eggs, nesting between September and January, only breeding once every two years. Ranking 1st in the EDGE reptile list, and having the highest EDGE score of any terrestrial vertebrate, this turtle represents over 80 million years of evolutionary history! The IUCN currently ranks these prehistoric reptiles as Critically Endangered due to a large population decrease in the past century, with them also being listed in CITES Appendix II.
