Some historians have suggested that the successful Canadian attack across the Canal du Nord in France in the fall of 1918 was our country’s most impressive military operation of the entire First World War. Accompanied by a massive Allied artillery bombardment, the Canadian Corps passed through a 2,400 metre-wide dry section of the canal and breached three lines of strong German defences. Pictured is a Canadian battalion waiting to advance from the captured Canal du Nord during the battle. Photo: Imperial War Museum #CanadaRemembers - @canadaremembers on Instagram

Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! Unfortunately, these seeds could also belong to invasive plant species. #indianwildlife #slothbears #iucn #seeddispersers #wildkarnata #natureinfocus #bears #naturephotography #cameratrapping #nature #natureinindia #indiannature - @sanjay.gubbi on Instagram

Recently I was invited to join 60 other top wildlife photographers from around the world to be part of @printsforwildlife. This is a new global campaign to raise funds for conservation across Africa to help support rangers and communities because of the impacts of Covid. The temporary shutdown of safari tourism in Africa because of Covid means there is far less revenue for supporting national parks, rangers and local people who protect the continent’s wild animals. Prints for Wildlife brings together 60 top wildlife photographers who have each donated one of their favourite photographs, to be printed in a limited edition of 50 prints, and sold for US$100 each. I’ve donated “Imfolozi Giraffe” to the cause, and I’ve been told this week it is one of the 20 top-selling prints. So get your order in quickly if you want one! Once Imfolozi Giraffe has sold out, I’ll be donating a second favourite image of mine (“Mana Pools Elephant”). All funds from Prints for Wildlife will go to @africanparksnetwork, which is, in my opinion, the most effective large conservation organisation on the continent. In conjunction with local governments, African Parks currently manage 18 national parks across Africa, in 11 countries such as Republic of Congo, DRC, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Chad, Angola, Rwanda and Central African Republic. Over the past few years I’ve worked several times as a photographer for African Parks and have always been hugely impressed and inspired by the work they are doing. They are making a meaningful difference, right now, on the ground, where it counts. @printsforwildlife have already raised over US$110 000, and the campaign still has a few weeks to go. The goal is to raise over US$250 000 by 26th August, so get yourself a print from www.printsforwildlife.org. There are prints available from some of the best photographers in the world! Available only for a month at the special price of US$100, each print is 45cm x 30cm with a 1cm white border, and printed on Hahnemuhle Hemp fine art paper, and is couriered to you. - @scottramsay.africa on Instagram

This large bull elk photo made the front cover of Sports Afield a couple of years back. I always try and get out in the early morning just after a heavy snow when the sky is blue and the temperature is hovering somewhere in the teens or twenties. Busy roads are difficult and dangerous places for wildlife to move across, but well-designed bridges can help animals such as this moose “trying to get to the other side.” We have been working with partners like Vermont Fish & Wildlife and VTrans to make sure our roads, bridges, and highways are “wildlife- friendly” so that moose, bear, and bobcat can move across our landscape in search of food and mates. This bridge was specifically designed with wildlife in mind. #vtnature #stayconnected #wildlife #moose #transportation #partnership #allhandsonearth #teamnature #animalsonthemove - @tncvermont on Instagram

Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. Swipe ➡️ to see a close up of the research station and a better view of the valley from the ground. 📝 Data Sources: National Land Survey of Finland 🗺 Me @ @portsmouthuni Shoutout to Dr. Nick Pepin and the Geography Department at UoP #MappedByRich #MappingAtoZ #2Mapsketeers #mapstagram #geography #geology #map #maps #mapping #cartography #carto #cartonerd #mapinspo #mapporn #gis #travel #mapart #QGIS #FOSS4G #Research #Dissertation #Finland #Kevo #climatechange - @mappingatoz on Instagram
