These properties were home to a pair of superstars of country music history, Johnny Cash and June Carter. J.R. Johnny Cash grew up in the first home pictured near Dyess, Arkansas. This five-room farmhouse was built during the Great Depression as part of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, becoming home to the Cash family and their five children in 1935. Cashs roots in rural northeast Arkansas stayed with him throughout his career as one of country musics biggest stars. The second house, in Madison, Tennessee, was home to Carter and her first husband Carl Smith between 1952 and 1968. June was a member of the influential Carter family and regularly performed at Nashvilles Grand Ole Opry, often with her sisters and mother, Maybelle Carter. The Nina Simone Childhood Home is now permanently protected! The National Trust, @presnc, and @worldmonumentsfund have partnered with the homes owners to place a preservation easement on the singer’s childhood home in Tryon, NC. The easement is a voluntary legal agreement that will protect the home indefinitely and preserve its historic character; it will be held by Preservation North Carolina. Designated as a National Treasure by the National Trust in 2018, the Nina Simone Childhood Home is where the singer developed a love for piano and experienced racial discrimination that would shape her world view and social activism later in life.
