Most people in LA get stabbed by a knife & end up at the Trauma Center @harborucla_em My husband, Nick, was stabbed by his surfboard while surfing 🏄🏼 in Manhattan Beach in 2016. When the paramedic called me from Nick’s phone in the back of the ambulance, I was working at Malibu Urgent Care. When I work at urgent care, I get a mental break because no one dies- as opposed to my ER shifts. My husband had other plans for my day. I asked the paramedic, “Does he meet trauma center criteria for vital signs OR injury?” There was a pause & then he said “Both” 😱 I hate surfboard fins, why are they so f-ing sharp?! What is the point? It’s not like you take them out to cut a steak 🥩after your surf session! I have seen over a dozen surf fin injuries, many horrific depending on the location of the flesh they rip into. This was one of them. He had stabbed a branch of his femoral artery & the blood was running under his wetsuit onto his foot. A bystander ran to get the lifeguard who started wiping his left foot & Nick redirected them “It’s on my thigh.” He pulled off his wetsuit to expose his birthday suit & a 4 inch wound on his left inner thigh. A tourniquet was placed & he was driven by lights & sirens 🚨 to @harborucla_em The ER doctors controlled the bleeding & he continued to have fluid resuscitation. He was quickly escorted to radiology for a CT scan with IV contrast which localized the source of bleeding. His next stop was the operating room with trauma surgeon, Dr. Brant A. Putman 👨🏼‍⚕️ I arrived after the surgery was complete. One year later he attended the Trauma Survivor Celebration. I made sure to bring gifts to the lifeguards, fire department, ER & surgeons thanking them for saving his life. I honestly wish my friends & family would stop providing me so much content! I would tag my husband, but he is not on social media. I see this transfer of knowledge between generations as being vital to our culture and something that, unfortunately, we need to revive. The past and future meeting, to share time and skills in the present. • This photograph is part of my ongoing, very personal project of documenting my community. Its becoming a series of photographs that feel so close to my heart and intimate that I have trouble sharing them in such an impersonal way. One day it will be a book to take your time with, to sit with the images as I have sat with them. • But for now, a small collection of them are on display as part of an outdoor exhibit in Nelsons Lakeside Park which runs until Oct.15. Its a collaborative show between @thomasnowa @jakeshermanphoto and I that explores how the pandemic has influenced the communities we live in. There’ll be plenty posted on his fantastic Cricket career, but a few years ago I was asked to photograph Dean and the Australian Golf Champ, the late Ian Stanley on a round of Golf for promotional photo’s for Pay TV. It was one of the funniest jobs I’d ever done, they continually joked around and made it hard for me to concentrate to set up decent pics. Deano would suddenly crouch down and use his club like a billiard cue or lean on his bag to pose then suddenly turn it over emptying all his clubs over the green.. A fun morning with an amateur golfer that I’ll never forget, and a Top Class Cricketer that Australia and the Cricketing World will never forget.. Hispanic Heritage Month Day 10 Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in Californias San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Because Acostas father was drafted during World War II, Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. As an attorney his activities began in Oakland but it was in East Los Angeles where he gained notoriety, prior to his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in the Spring of 1974. Acosta is most well known as the author of two of the most important novels of the Chicano Protest Movement, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972), and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both novels are highly acclaimed as major contributions to the Chicano literary renaissance. This picture I took on the set of the feature film Bergman Island by Mia Hansen-Love, it was shot over the last two summers on Fårö. Many people worked very hard on this film and it was supposed to premiere this May. I have been involved in this project over 4 years. Location scouting, script help, getting approval to shoot inside the Ingmar Bergman house, and acting for the first and last time. It’s been a great time.
