Being in a band like that and growing up in it creates a certain kind of brotherhood and a bond like no other. It’s been nearly ten years since I’ve played fast and hard like I did with the Crows... I’m not sure my right hand could even keep up. Honestly I’m not even sure I could remember all the verses to half the songs I sang or if Ketch plays the fiddle tunes the same but I would imagine after a day of rehearsing everything would fall right back into place. Well... I guess we’ll find out how it goes on September 18th at the @theryman when I will be joining The Old Crow Medicine Show @crowmedicine for a live stream concert. I hear there’s even gonna be a limited amount of actual in person, in the pews tickets at the Mother Church of Country Music. They played a sizzling 15-song setlist made up of songs from their recently released Enlightened Rogues album along with several Allman Brothers classics. His collaboration with Elvis started in 1969, after the king saw some tv performances of him when he was still playing with Rickie Nelson. John made his first appearance on stage at an open mic night, basically on a dare. It was just a little club in Chicago, not even 20 people in there when I got up. I wasn’t the type to heckle, but I’d had a few beers and wasn’t really impressed with what I was hearing and said so under my breath. And someone at the next table said, “Well if it’s so easy, why don’t you get up and do it?” So I said, “Well, maybe I will.” I got up and sang Sam Stone and the audience just sat there. They looked at me, looked at each other, looked at me again… seemed like an eternity and, finally, they started applauding. The owner of the club came up afterwards and offered me a job singing there. I couldn’t believe it. The thing I really remember was that I was more comfortable than I’d ever felt. I just felt like that’s where I belonged. Without those small clubs, John Prine might’ve spent his 50 year career still a mailman. And even after he started playing larger venues, John worked as often as he could with independent venues and promoters. And he always loved popping up at local venues around Nashville.
