September has been the host to the Great British September Clean up. It started on the 11th and ends on the 27th but Id like to think its something we are all doing when we can. Here are some ways you can help; 🚮Join a local beach, park or area clean up if you want to do it in a more organised group. Not entirely sure how that would work now given the rule of 6.... probs not possible 😷 🚮Organise your own in small clean up with some friends. Hey it can be socialising too! 🚮A lot of councils now offer street champion kits so check your local councils website for their litter picking kits. 🚮Go out with your family (kids love it) litter picking around where you live and your local area. Next to the underway ice stations we conduct en route measurements with the instruments installed on board #Polarstern. Team Atmos uses them to investigate the energy and gas fluxes in the marginal ice zone. The data will be combined with water column measurements of team ocean, which they take with a deep #CTD cast. Once we are out of the ice, we will travel along the ice edge, passing it again to have a second transit through the marginal ice zone. Our last scientific waypoint is an ice floe, where position buoys had been installed during the #MOSAiC flight campaign. We will hopefully have the time to work on the ice there again, to combine current data with the data from the flight campaign. I have been recording this landmark for over 20 years and have watched as it has eroded with high water and winter ice. The photographs and videos acknowledge the hand of the artist, the lens and vantage point, as I record what happens before the camera. I visited Barcelona for the first time in September 2013 to visit a good friend who I met in India, and shoot for a couple of weeks. I immediately fell in love with the city and the photographic opportunities it offers. I went back another 9 times, each time for a couple of weeks, the next 5 years and I made kind of a project that hopefully sometime will be a book too. Already in that first trip, I saw a man who spend almost all day, every day, in a seaside spot called Rambla del Mar. A handsome, tanned, middle aged man spending all day there, sunbathing, sometimes talking to people. You would find him there during winter time too. He gave the impression of a mentally ill person. I never talked to him. But in every trip in Barcelona I would take a stroll down to Rambla del Mar and I would search for him, just to see him. And many times he offered me nice opportunities for a photo, without knowing it. As in this photo, which was shot in that first trip. - @burnmyeye on Instagram

Beyond 80 degrees north! This is as far north as it is possible to travel on a sailing yacht before reaching the edge of the sea ice which extends all the way to the north pole. This shot was taken after we had sailed north from the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard. We paused here for a while to watch the ghostly movement of the sea ice as it gently rises and falls on the slight swell. It makes you realise there are somethings much bigger than us in the universe. Nature is in charge. Human climate change is drastically effecting the Arctic with predictions that summer sea ice could disappear by 2050. Plastic pollution is cause of Climate Change: In 2019 a new report Plastic and Climate was published. According to the report, in 2019, production and incineration of plastic will contribute greenhouse gases in the equivalent of 850 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In current trend, annual emissions from these sources will grow to 1.34 billion tonnes by 2030. By 2050 plastic could emit 56 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, as much as 14 percent of the earths remaining carbon budget. By 2100 it will emit 260 billion tonnes, more than half of the carbon budget. Yesterday was the calculated day for the first sunset we were to experience here in the Arctic during leg 5. At our latitude the sunset is a process that takes several hours. In the evening, people assembled outside on the various decks of Polarstern. But there were low clouds just above the horizon, which prevented us from seeing the sun sinking beneath it. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful evening with the red colored clouds being nearly more interesting than a clear sky would have been. So, fun story for you: Iceland was never supposed to happen. But before we get there, let me preface - What this show was supposed to be and what it became are very different things. After Zac met Darin, he decided to shift the series into something more meaningful to him and what he wanted to share with the world - which included his passion for health and the environment. We took that, along with a small team, tight budget and no blueprint, and we went on a storytelling journey. One that was both challenging and fun. Fast forward through Puerto Rico, London, France and Sardinia - all amazing – but this post is about Iceland. We flew back from Europe on Sunday and showed up to work on Monday, where we found out the next shoot that was scheduled to take place in 10 days fell through. Cool.👌 Mike always wanted to go to Iceland, but for various reasons, it wasn’t initially on the table. I volunteered to look into it. By 11am Tuesday, Mike says, “if you could have creative of an episode by tomorrow morning, I think I can get this green lit.” Inner me: 😳🤢🤯. Outer me: of course! No problem. 👍 I then took a crash course in everything Iceland - especially with the help of @magnea81h , our talented fixer. I told her what I was thinking with Renewable Energy, and she told me about the Magic of Iceland. By 10am the next day, I delivered a rough creative. By Wednesday night, Mike said it was green lit, but if we were going to do it, we had to leave by next Thursday. Can I put this episode together in 8 days? Inner me: 😳🤢🤯😭. Outer me: of course. I can 💯 make this happen.👌 Those 8 days were filled with so much Girl Power. @jackiepalombo , Magnea and I took on the brunt of it to pull the episode together. And then we continued our work with an incredible crew and guests in Iceland. It was a magical experience and one that continued with @anewviewfromme and @rachael_wax who brought Iceland to its full potential in the edit bay. It was in our ability to shift that we often found magic. I’m proud of our team, but also appreciate the people of Iceland for embracing us so quickly and sharing their stories. ✨ - @lelizacoco on Instagram

On our way through the marginal ice zone we encountered a beautiful ice type: pancake ice. It emerges during an early stage of new ice formation from frazil ice, which consists of ice needles that stick together to grease ice. In this phase, swell is needed to let pancakes grow, as otherwise the ice would just form an even pattern and cover the ocean as so-called Nilas. But the swell makes the newly forming ice pieces colliding and theses collisions lead to more or less circular plates with usually padded edges.
