On Womens Equality Day, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment as part of the United States Constitution, which secured for women the right to vote. . Although their role is not well documented, women have been a vital part of the Y movement for over 175 years! Below are a few notable roles that women have had in the YMCA movement: . -In the mid-1800s, women served in unpaid roles in the YMCA movement including volunteer teachers and fundraisers. . -During WWI, over 5,000 women worked in military canteens and many led units of female war workers and volunteers. . -The YMCA gave soldiers a place where they could get away from the harsh realities of the war. They organized canteens at the front lines in France. The huts or tents at the front lines were run by “Secretaries,” who provided writing materials, stock libraries, and sometimes, a gramophone and records. . -After the war, women were finally invited to join the YMCA as members and they began entering the Y workforce in higher numbers. . -In 1976, YMCA of the USA appointed Violet King Henry to Executive Director to its Organizational Development Group, making her the first woman named to a senior management position. - @lakelandymca on Instagram

Today we’re celebrating the legendary Grace Hopper on what would have been her 114th birthday 🎂🎉🎉 An icon in the world of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), the Navy admiral, American mathematician and pioneer of computer technology helped to devise and develop the very first commercial electronic computer in 1944. Heard of COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language)? Well Grace also helped to create that. She believed that computer code should resemble human language as closely as possible rather than robotic machine speak, and the languages she helped write are still in use today, and even used at Google HQ. Grace’s contribution to computer science was recognized wide and far – not only was Grace the recipient of a large number of shiny awards 🏅✨, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2016, but Grace’s lively and irreverent way of storytelling also earned her the loving nickname of “Grandma COBOL”. Fun fact #1 While working at Harvard University on the Mark 1, she coined the term ‘bug’ to describe computer problems when a moth flew into the circuit of the device. The remains of the bug can be seen to this day in the Mark 1 team’s logbooks at the Smithsonian institution in Washington DC. Fun fact #2 Google recently launched a cable named after Grace Hopper called the Grace Hopper cable. It’s incredibly befitting that on National “Thank a Police Officer” Day, we remember one of our own who gave the ultimate sacrifice 24 years ago today. James Russell Sorrow (Russ) served the Greenville Police Department for four years and was an irreplaceable officer on the “Blue Machine” platoon. Former Officer Rita Seaborn says that, “the officers who served with him remember the dedication Russ had for the badge and everything required for wearing it with integrity, pride and courage, and his uncanny sense of humor.” Let us never forget. Robert E. Roeder of Summit Station, Pennsylvania, was a Captain in the @usarmy and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II on this day in 1944. Roeder joined the Army in 1936 from his birthplace of Summit Station Pennsylvania and served with Company G, 350th Infantry, 88th Infantry Division. On September 27th, 1944, during the defense of Mount Battaglia, Roeder repeatedly encouraged his men and directed their defense against the enemy. The next day, he was injured by shell fragments and carried to the company command post. He refused medical treatment and dragged himself to the door of the post and fired his weapon at the attacking Germans while continuing to lead his men. He was killed moment later by an exploding shell. For his actions on this day, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Roeder is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. He was 27 years old at the time of his death. We are eternally thankful for Captain Roeder’s service to our country. When I was eight years old, I entered a Qantas stamp design competition because first prize was a ride in the front seat of a four seater Cessna 172 and second prize was a seat behind the pilot. I wasn’t very artistic but I was determined to give it a go and I won second prize. Ever since then I wanted to sit in the pilot seat. So began a lifelong passion for all things aviation. I joined Qantas in 1984 on the 747 as one of the first female pilots. I used to get a few peculiar looks from passengers when they saw me walking in to the cockpit. Nowadays people don’t bat an eyelid. I’ve flown the 747 for the majority of my career and am so honoured to be flying our very last 747 to the US.
