Hans-Joachim Marseille, The Star of Africa, the undisciplined man who believed that alcohol made him a better pilot and shot down 8 planes in 10 minutes. (Started a new great war page @faces_of_ww1 Please follow our page ) He was born in Berlin in 1919. Of French Huguenot descent, his father was an army general. He was a very weak and sickly child... a flu was about to take him to the grave His parents divorced when he was very young, which influenced his undisciplined, rebellious and independent character. He had a passion for flying,so he joined the Luftwaffe in 1938 at the age of 18, despite abhorring military life.Enlisting in peacetime led to full training. He was a lover of nightlife, of arriving very late to training sessions and he even considered that drinking alcohol made him a better pilot. The worst punishment he received was when the officers, fed up with his continuing indiscipline, despite proving to be an aviation ace in the Battle of Britain ... changed his unit and sent him to North Africa to fight the Allies. Marseille attacked in conditions that many considered unfavorable, but its marksmanship allowed it to make an approach fast enough to fire and be able to escape the shots that could be made by the two planes flying on both sides of its target. His excellent eyesight made him detect the enemy before he was discovered in turn, allowing him to take the appropriate measures to maneuver and thus be able to place himself in an optimal position for an attack. On June 3, 1942, he single-handedly attacked a formation of sixteen Curtiss P-40 fighters from No. 5 Squadron SAAF and shot down six aircraft, five of them in six minutes, including those of three aces Robin Pare, Douglas Golding and Andre Botha. September 1, 1942 was the day he achieved his greatest success as a fighter pilot, shooting down seventeen planes in one day, September being the month in which he achieved the most successes during his career, shooting down 54 enemy planes. the seventeen enemy planes shot down, eight were shot down in just ten minutes. Oh Jake. You would have been 13 years old today. Crazy how it’s been almost 2 years since you left our side and the memories are still so strong. You probably know by now that we have Murphy. Brian said we couldn’t get another black lab because it would remind us too much of you. So we got the fluffiest white dog we could find. While he has become part of our family we still think of you often and many times we call Murphy your name. 84yrs ago in San Francisco, California. I have had this 1936 photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge in my house for a decade plus. So last week I decided to take a flight #unitedairlines out to the beautiful Bay Area and try to find the spot where this image was captured, back in 1936. (unfortunately I did not bring this reference image with me) So I did not successfully find the EXACT spot nor use the exact focal lengths and exposures as this was just a first attempt/scouting trip. But I know I’m close and my next trip I think I know EXACTLY where to go and will have all the specs dialed in if the tides align. Annnnnd then I grabbed some grub and walked the SF Botanical gardens at Golden gate park for a few hours before flying back. Adventures abound in time and spaces. - @djcorderophotography on Instagram

28 years ago today, we opened Fat Head’s. It seems like yesterday, but also feels like a lifetime. Over the years we have met so many people, created many friendships, watched families get started and grow, and even had to say goodbye to some dear friends. ⠀ ⠀ Although we faced many challenges and obstacles early on, and throughout the years, we never thought that we would see anything like we have seen over the last six months. This may be our biggest challenge yet, for all of us. ⠀ ⠀ Thank you all, friends, customers, and especially our employees for joining us on this incredible ride. We’ve had so much fun with you all. You are family. We could not have taken this journey, and succeeded, without your kindness, dedication, and support. Nor could we face this newest challenge without you. During our wedding rehearsal, with the marriage equality decision having come down only a few hours before, Hilary made it clear that she wanted to hear our officiant say the words, “you are lawfully wedded wives.” During a team coffee chat, with that day five years ago still fresh in my mind, I let everyone know that tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. It wasn’t the first time they’ve heard about Hilary and I know it won’t be the last. I’m proud to be part of a company where I don’t have to worry over the words I use to describe who I am or who I love. I’m proud to be married to a woman who is pushing the narrative of what love looks like through her paintings. I’m proud that every day, my team members show up inspired to enable other people around the globe to tell their stories and that those same team members are brave enough to share their stories with me and our colleagues. #TBT - 21 years ago this month, Crowleys tug Sea Victory towed the aircraft carrier ex-USS Oriskany from Vallejo, California, around the southern tip of South American via the Strait of Magellan to Beaumont, Texas, as it was too large to fit through the Panama Canal. The 112-day, 15,153-mile tow for the U.S. Navy marked one of the longest in Crowley history. The voyage was completed on schedule, on budget, and without a single lost-time accident or mechanical failure.
