Next up for in our #archivesfavourites series are the diaries of William Thomas Swift a schoolteacher from Churchdown (D3981). They included entries for every single day from 31 December 1859 when the diarist was eighteen years old, until 5 February 1915, just five days before his death at the age of 73. The diaries are basically personal in nature and are in consequence very revealing of the character of their author. They also give an insight to life during this time, mentioning local happenings, national events such as the Boer War and the Diamond Jubilee and death of Queen Victoria. Im not normally a poetry person and this book did nothing to convince me otherwise. This whole book felt like those instagram quotes minus the inspirational photograph. Does that even count? I admit Im no expert, but the words seemed more poetical than poem. Like the author took a really pretty sentence and then hit enter a lot.Also, maybe Im a hypocrite here (just based on the sheer amount of books in my house) but I kind of felt bad for all the unused page space in this book.Theres barely a handful of words per page and just vast amounts of white paper. It just felt a bit wasteful.Overall - it was...an experience. Not the best experience, but an experience nonetheless. Young friends, I know it will stun you, shock you, perhaps even offend you that I was your age once and can remember some of the challenges I faced, some of the angst I felt as a young adult. I wish to share one profound experience I had as a young adult that has shaped my life. As a 19-year-old, I read the @thebookofmormon for the first time with “real intent.” It was while reading this sacred record so hungrily, even ravenously, that I felt—again and again—the undeniable whispering of the Holy Ghost declaring to my soul the truthfulness of its message. To those first convictions have been added all the other quickening moments and sanctifying manifestations that now give meaning to my days and purpose to my years. But the Book of Mormon was the first. I testify that the Book of Mormon is the sacred expression of Christ’s great last covenant with mankind. Reading it was the beginning of my light. The darkness of the room was a black cloak and weighed heavily on my back. A tap was heard at the window , I ignored it. Nothing seemed more important to me at that moment than my relationship whose roots were rotten to a point where nothing could fix it. The night was followed by more taps at the window. I woke up and a flood of pain filled my mind looking at the sullen sky. I was jolted back after noticing the stare at the window. A little girl with eyes too big to be human and so blue that the oceans would be ashamed smiled at me . Let me in tap , tap , tap Its too cold outside I couldnt tell reality from dreams and fell down. I woke up in the afternoon not knowing why this happened to me. My day went by as normal as any other day. I walked through it trapped in a cloud of sorrow unable to feel anything else. I walked home in the rainy evening. Everything seemed motionless. Suddenly I saw her in the middle of the street , waving at me with her sullen smile and asked me to come . I walked towards her as swiftly as I could and fell on my knees to meet her. She pointed to the left side of the road and I pushed her away from the blue truck. The same blue as her eyes. . . . I hope the story brought you some chills and the picture matched your aesthetic. My first rejection slip! 1966. Beverly Sky (who is now my best friend of more than 50 years) and I were counselors at Blue Mountain Camp. After the kids were asleep, we’d sit on the porch of our cabin, smoke weed, and write (me) and illustrate (her) our opus, Grimm Tales for Fairy Children. I recently found this in some old papers and tacked it up on my wall because I love thinking about those two girls who were just excited about making art. It didn’t matter that our book was silly, that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, let alone publish it. What mattered was that we were wading into the waters of creativity and we liked it there. Beverly was already living the life of an artist. She was my first role model and inspiration that I could also live that life. I don’t think we were discouraged by the rejection. The fact that someone—even “the rejection slip sender”—thought our work was “a groove,” was validation enough. I wish I’d saved all my rejection slips over the years so I could come into a workshop and dump a dozen big garbage bags filled with them into the middle of the floor!
