HUDSON COUNTY REGIONAL SWAT TEAM ARRESTS 19-YEAR-OLD HOBOKEN MAN IN UNION CITY SHOOTING INCIDENT Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has released the following information: The Hudson County Regional SWAT Unit, in coordination with the Union City Police Department and the Hoboken Police Department, arrested and charged a 19-year-old Hoboken man on charges related to a shooting incident that occurred on Third Street and Bergenline Avenue in Union City on August 26, 2020. Terrence Torres, age 19, of Hoboken, was arrested at approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2020, after officers with the Hudson County Regional SWAT Team executed a search warrant without incident at an apartment on Harrison Street in Hoboken. During the search, officers recovered a firearm. Torres has been charged with Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1A(1) and 2C:11-3A(1)(2), a first-degree crime; Possession of a Weapon (firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4A(1), a second-degree crime; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (firearm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1), a second-degree crime; Receiving Stolen Property in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:20-7A, a third-degree crime; and Possession of a Defaced Firearm in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-9e, a fourth-degree crime. On August 26, 2020, just before midnight, members of the Union City Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in the area Third Street and Bergenline Avenue. Responding officers found shell casings at the scene as well as two cars that had been struck. A victim reported to officers that he was shot at while riding a bicycle in the area but was not injured. Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Regional SWAT, the Union City Police Department, the Hoboken Police Department and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and K-9 Unit, for the investigation and arrest. From 1999-2002 a film called ‘Girlhood’ was made by following the lives of two teenage girls from Baltimore (Shanae Owens and Megan Jensen) who were serving time at Waxter juvenile detention center for girls in Laurel, Maryland. The film documents what landed the girls in Waxter, the steps they take to get back home to very different family situations, and how they fare once they make it out. Isolating clips for this film has been more challenging than any other piece of Baltimore documentation simply because there are so many layers here. So many striking scenes. The filmmaker Liz Garbus uses Shanae and Megan as examples of the spike in violent crimes that teenage girls had been committing throughout the 90s but in showing their lives at Waxter, it proves that, much like prison for adults, the facility seemed to do little to actually rehabilitate children. It was nothing more than a prison. And though there is some valuable information too, ‘Girlhood’ is still an unsettling watch. For one, it follows a long trend of Baltimore’s documentation to the outside world being primarily focused on crime and drug usage, as if those are the only things going on here. For two, it’s extremely heartbreaking to see the realities that led these two girls to those points of their lives. There are some bright spots. Seeing the girls dance to Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” at Shanae’s surprise bday party is funny because that was the year it actually came out lol. Megan pondering on what she’d wish for if given the chance is poignant. And Shanae having family dinner during a weekend away from Waxter was nice to see too. During a follow up special with Oprah about 6 years ago, Shanae shared that she is now a proud mom and social worker in Baltimore.
