We’ve really slowed down at the studio, these new restrictions mean all of our studio activities have come to a halt. As well as studio owner @asobimasu_clay taking some time off to welcome the arrival of her new baby. We’ve enjoyed our online classes and sharing hand-building kits with you. But we’ve now finished this program and will be taking a short break. We’ll be a little quiet throughout the month of Sept as we wait to see how things may change in Vic. We hope to open our doors again sometime in Oct. If you’ve got a booking on hold or work ready for collection, you’ll be hearing from us this week about how we plan to manage this. We thank each of you for your support during this time. For joining us in our online classroom & all our new followers eagerly awaiting for some normalcy & classes again. Meet Lower School Nurse Elizabeth Blanton 97 Elizabeth Blanton, SN, RN, NCSN is very familiar with St. Catherine’s. She started her St. Catherine’s journey in kindergarten, graduating in 1997. Prior to joining St. Catherine’s as a school nurse a decade ago, Blanton worked at VCU in Acute Care Pediatrics. Why nursing? Nursing is a great way to give back to the community. The profession gives you a sense of purpose. Intellectually it also keeps me interested. Ive always loved pediatrics and community health nursing, so school nursing is a great combination of those fields. What is the best part of your day at St. Catherine’s? Spending time with the children. The students are so happy to be back on campus, and it has made all of the hard work and continued efforts we are making worth it. What is one thing you want the Saints community to know right now? Be patient with yourself and others. Life is very stressful right now, and unfortunately we dont know when this COVID crisis will resolve. Its important that you take care of your physical and mental health. If we are patient with ourselves and reduce stress, our immune systems will be more robust. Remember that we are not living in normal times, so dont expect your daily life to be normal. Adapt to the changes that are expected of us, and respect your health and the health of your community. Kenny’s varied practice spans photo-realist landscape, indexical mono-printing, quasi-abstract shaped panels, Google Earth manipulations, fakes, Venn diagram drawing and poetry. Here, through renderings of One World Trade Center in the style of sidewalk artist caricature, Kenny anthropomorphizes the building into a menacing creature looming over downtown New York. Made just over the course of a year these eight paintings depict the monster in various emotional states, vantage points, times of day, and seasons. A selection of Kenny’s related Meadowlands paintings have also been made available as part of this project for our online viewing room. I was certainly not made to be subtle so why the hell I be acting like it?! No more!!! 3. That to truly heal you gotta let the pain rip you to shreds. Let it rupture through your heart and take over you like a heart attack. It won’t work if you run from it, eat it, drink it or smoke it away. You can’t distract it with people or with work. You need to be with it and feel it. Understanding it is not enough. Your heart and your body must get to know it. When you sit with the pain you are able to follow the depths of where the hurt is truly coming from. This is where the answers live and this is where the true transformation of spirit takes place. This look reminds me of my spirit. It reminds me of my brave heart and my golden soul. It reminds me of my light and my love and my humanity. It reminds me that the journey through pain will always be worth it for there is magic feelings waiting on the other side. Were excited for todays Market Day, hoping for some good weather for everyone! This week for our Vendor Spotlight we have @tanyarayfishing! 🦐🐟🎣⚓️🛥 @tanyarayfishing is a commercial fishing business. The owner Danny Arundel is a 2nd generation commercial fisherman. Fishing is what we do for our living. Our licenses allow us to fish for Salmon, Tuna and Shrimp. The furthest north we go is to the Alaska border and we fish the full BC coastline. Our product is valued added from the whole fish to fillets, loins, smoked and canned. It is processed in a federally inspected plant and meets all required regulations. We then sell our products at various farmers markets throughout the summer and at trade shows spring and fall. We have been attending farmers markets for 15+ years and attending trade shows 10+ years. We pride ourselves on having the very best product available.100% Canadian/BC produced. You do not need to buy any fancy green reusable products to reuse. 🤯 Its #reuse week and I want to kick off with my favorite thing to re-use: ziplocks. 🥪 I have not bought ziplock bags in 3 years. I honestly dont use them much anymore, Ive found other ways to store food, like re-using containers or putting a plate over a bowl of salad to seal it. 🤓 But the biggest reason is because I re-use my ziplocks. I carefully wash them, dry them, and then store them. I also do this with tinfoil! 🤔 Thinking strategically has allowed me to be better at reusing. I only use ziplocks for foods that really *need* to be stored in a light and flexible container, for example dehydrated meals while hiking. There’s a reason why Parmigiano Reggiano is known as “the King of Cheeses”. Even the French, with their proud culture of amazing cheeses, admit it and serve Parmigiano Reggiano for Champagne tastings. It’s not only the world’s most complex cheese but also the healthiest. Professional Italian athletes insist on including it in their diets. There are not enough words (certainly not on Instagram) to do this cheese justice. You can argue that a whole cuisine, that of Emilia Romagna, was crafted around it ! Historically, the wheels of Parmigiano, weighing about 80 pounds each and selling for at least $1,000, have been and still are used as collateral for banks; these banks even have their own temperature controlled rooms for them ! Parmigiano belongs to a category of cheese called Grana, of which there are 2 types : Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano. Grano means grain and refers to the wheat berry-sized curds that are formed during the fermentation and give the cheese its famous and characteristic granular and crunchy consistency. Though similar, Grana Padano is made from the previous evening’s skimmed milk, while Parmigiano Reggiano is a blend of the previous evening’s skimmed milk and the morning’s whole milk. Both are great but Parmigiano is regarded as the more “serious” cheese with more robust and aged flavors, while Grana is a more enjoyable one eaten out of hand or grated on Pastas. The wheels are cracked (not cut) open and, when serving the cheese, you break off pieces, instead of slicing. I love to party as much as anyone but when I take trips, it’s never a spring break type. It’s cultural and always a food pilgrimage. These experiences left indelible marks on me and it’s my Joy to share them with you. The list is endless of wines to match Parmigiano but start off with a Ripasso for red or a drier Riesling for white. Of course, you can drizzle the local Balsamic Vinegar on it, too. Needing the critical functions of a new office and equipment shop with the option to expand in the future, we recently finished an equipment shop facility for @ncdotcom in Greenville, NC. Customizing to fit the needs of the employees, this shop features 12 long bays for mechanical and specialty use, offices, storage areas, service rooms, utility rooms, and restrooms. “My days are marked by what Nature chooses for me. My working hours, my product choices, the quantities to put on the market and the customers to satisfy, everything is chosen by Nature which dictates precise and non-negotiable laws. Since we are in quarantine my collaborators are at home. First I reduced their working hours, then when the situation in Italy became unsustainable, I chose not to put their lives at risk. Now, with the help of my mother, we are completing the production of the products with the same love and dedication as always. The rhythms are always very fast, but I notice that the days go by fast and it is pleasant to literally take care of the vegetables, the pickles, all the products that I know that will satisfy the palates of the whole world. In each jar there is my blessing, I follow the whole chain with extreme attention to detail, especially now. Regarding my attention to details, Ill tell you about an episode that happened a few days ago. I was preparing the chicory, La Cicoria, and my mother helped me with the boiling and the various stages of preparation. The moment of labeling arrived, which is rigorously done by hand for some delicate products, I realized that many harsh had the label badly put. I didnt have the courage to ask my mother to do them again, but neither to put them on the market in that state. My son, Antonio, noticed from my face that something was wrong and he asked me: Mom, can I do them again? Ill do a good job, youll see. My son is only 11 years old and has the same passion for details as me. So, I accepted his help and together we put the labels back in the right position. For many years my products have arrived all over the world, through shipping and couriers. During this pandemic, I also increased shipments to many locations in my country. However, when I can, I always try to personally satisfy requests bringing products to the home of my loyal customers. I cannot enter their homes; I can no longer drink coffee with them, but I leave the packages at a safe distance. Wer nicht dabei sein konnte, erhält hier einen Einblick in den Workshop für Erwachsene, den Anna Rubin im Rahmen ihrer Ausstellung im Gewerbemuseum Winterthur Mitte September 2020 geleitet hat. Der Wunsch zu fliegen stand in diesem Workshop im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes weit oben. So ist es denn auch dieser Gedanke, der den ganzen Bau dieses typisch japanischen Leichtwinddrachens begleitete. Die Teilnehmer*innen erlernten zunächst die Technik des Bambusspaltens und erstellten danach das Gerüst für den Drachen aus selbst gespalteten Bambusstäbchen. Das Papier haben sie mit Tusche in der japanischen Färbetechnik «Shibori» gestaltet und abschliessend haben alle ihre Drachen auf ihre Wind- und Flugtauglichkeit hin getestet. This month we celebrate the 8th anniversary of the grand opening of Pacific Biodiesels Hawaii Island refinery. The 2012 milestone event was attended by employees, government representatives, renewable energy advocates and other supporters of locally produced renewable fuel. Company founders Bob and Kelly King were honored to have the late Senator Daniel Inouye speak at the opening. “Let’s not blink this time,” said the Senator, referring to the early development of renewable energy, prompted by the oil crisis in the 1970’s, which died when petroleum prices dropped. Lets talk about post vs pre-blending coffees. Post-blending involves roasting components individually and then blending them afterwards. In contrast, pre-blending involves blending the coffees as green beans then roasting them as a single batch. Different roasters take different approaches and each has its distinct pros and cons. Post-blending allows you more control in roasting each individual component to achieve optimal flavour, however, this requires you to understand how to achieve the same roast profile with different-sized batches. Pre-blending allows you a greater consistency in batch size, translating to easier consistency in roast. Were very excited to announce that Salt Lake City is now home to one of the most advanced #recycling centers in the country! The new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) was built and is operated by @wastemanagement. Its where all of Salt Lake City’s residential recycling is sorted before the material goes on to its final destination to turn into new goods. It’s a single-stream operation and sorts empty plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, cardboard, paper, and newspaper. The facility is outfitted with the latest recycling technology and equipment. This matters because consumer material continues to change at a rapid pace and the sheer quantity of recyclable material being processed has also gone up dramatically– and will only continue to grow. So we need facilities that can keep up, especially with the inundation of “contamination” in recycling bins (these are items that aren’t recyclable in the blue bin, but can overwhelm these facilities – like plastic bags, the many types of new-fangled packaging, Styrofoam, as well as things that obviously shouldn’t go in there like hoses, bowling balls, food, clothing, trash etc. See our Stories for a glimpse.) What’s different at this MRF, you might ask? A good analogy is that it’s like going from the Flintstones with the old recycling technology to the Jetsons with the new technology . . . overnight. The facility is comprised of a network of machinery equipped with advanced automation capabilities and sorting optics. Rotating fiber screens, ballistic motion separators, 2D and 3D optical sorters, and barrel magnets are among technologies used to separate materials. More than 2.5 miles of fast-moving conveyor belts carry materials through this single-stream processing facility. The MRF has been operating for a month now and the improvements in recovery quantities and end-product quality are astounding. It’s also helping the City with fuel and time savings. Due to its closer location in SLC, we’ve been able to cut 1.5 hours from each of our recycling truck’s daily drives.
