Been keeping a low posting profile to clear the social media airways for other’s voices, but a HUGE THANK YOU is overdue to you all who helped me raise funds and donated COVID PPE in support of 15 asylum shelters in Tijuana. * Together we raised over $3,000 USD, that paid for new migrant mothers get safe quarantine shelter and support for themselves and their newborns, we provided hundreds of masks and PPE to migrants and doctors in Tijuana and Mexicali, helped provide meals for the 15 shelters and individual grocery gift cards for migrants outside the shelter system. And our donations are still being put to use!!! All possible because of the hard working women and community partners at @centro32fbt Families Belong Together Tijuana, who helped distribute our donations. * A huge thank you also to @gerardomonterrubio and @cyanyellowmagenta who have been teaching art clases at the trans asylum shelter in preparation for our next big project: building a permanent ceramics studio at Jardín de Mariposas!!!!! * With COVID numbers rising exponentially in both Tijuana and Mexicali, and the US’s closing of the border and halt on Asylum Hearings, there is still much work to be done and support to continue. Hey folks! Now with some mental space, and some urgent fires put out I am able to reflect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Covid closed our facility for 90 days between March 16th-June 15th, which put our production schedule in a crippling backlog. As a made to order business this was devastating. Our cash flow disappeared overnight and each day closed only added to an already too long wait time for our customers. We tried to cut and sew from home, but were terribly inefficient (because spare bedrooms and small apartments are not made for production!) To survive we pulled from business reserves, my personal savings and Ive gone without a salary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Between March and August of 2020 we lost an estimated $80,000 in revenue as a direct result of COVID-19. A handful of grants have helped out (Ive applied for ALL the grants, got mostly rejections), we spent a month making masks (thanks to generous donors that covered our payroll for sewing team members!) and our event Redesigning Fashion was profitable, combined, these efforts put a dent in that $80K number. But despite our very best efforts were still running behind by about $30K. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are FINALLY starting to emerge from the damage done by Covid, to be clear, the pandemic is still very much affecting small businesses ours included, but on the positive side our production schedule is inching its way back to normal and our fabric suppliers are resuming normal shipping schedules. We’ve fulled trained our new team members and we are up, running and ready to make something just for you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In lieu of an annual Black Friday/ Small Business Saturday/ Cyber Monday sale, were offering 15% off everything in store this week only. I’ve been library hopping this whole week long, exploring the rich offerings of the Los Angeles Public Library system. I’ve been to free classes and events hosted by the Central Library and quite a few of the 72 branches spread out across the breadth of our city.⁠ ⁠ Through the library, I’ve joined in a book club, a writing class and a career day. I’ve seen children read aloud to a dog. I’ve learned from a master gardener how to turn the pages my columns are printed on into pots for seedlings. I’ve heard people grapple with systemic racism in a learning circle focused on the New York Times’ 1619 Project. I’ve watched volunteers helping people learn English explicate idioms: dog-tired, cloud nine, kick my butt.⁠ ⁠ I’ve paid my visits while all the library system’s buildings have remained #COVID closed to the public — a physical absence that has hit people hard. But I’ve discovered through my tour that as many (real) doors have closed, other (virtual) ones have opened, greatly extending the library’s reach. The Canadian Shield is an advanced manufacturing company that specializes in the production and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers across Canada. 🇨🇦 The company was founded amid the COVID-19 pandemic by educational technology company InkSmith to address the shortage of protective gear for front-line staff in hospitals and medical facilities. Humans.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As customers, as workers, as machinists or designers- we all play our roles and our parts and it has been clear that this system is in no way to the benefit of all- rather the minority.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is why I only work with certified or verified factories- and pre Covid, why I made a point of visiting them where possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Spot inspections should be the norm, and it’s not with a view to then boycott that factory if their standards have slipped- we have to work together to bring change and better working environments for all.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So many of us have family members who used to sew us clothing, or knit or crochet for us.. With all this time we have been gifted I decided to use some of it to help with this shortage of masks. We can see from China, Italy and so on, this pandemic is going to continue to exhaust the medical community of their resources. As Forbes.com put out the call the other day: “Calling All People Who Sew And Make: You Can Help Make Masks For 2020 Healthcare Worker PPE Shortage “ No, these are not the requirements of an N95 but if you read the article and do a little research you will find that these people need help. Here’s a part of the article and you will find a few links to patterns to see some yourself.....”If you think that a handmade N95-type mask cannot be used, think again. Even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a place for them — in times of crisis, like the one we are in right now. On the CDC page: Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of Facemasks, they explain that as a last resort, a homemade mask is acceptable. Frankly, we are at that stage right now. Here’s how they explain it in the Crisis Strategy section, When No Facemasks Are Available, Options Include: “Healthcare personnel (HCP) use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.” It is possible that the government and manufacturers will ramp up in a wartime-like effort, but the reinforcement is more likely to come from the people. Planning ahead - The girls lighting up while looking through baby stuff that will go to good use soon. They were so excited they forgot I existed in this world. The garage is filled with baby items for the mothers. - Three weeks ago I was invited to photograph pregnant teens in their home. They are living at @savinggracematernityhome. When I was young my mother, sister and I stayed in a shelter for battered women. We were hiding from an extremely abusive man. I remember the sadness of the home, I remember the cold of the grey walls and the invisible but unnerving flicker of blue cold florescent lights. I remember lunch trays and peas divided from cubed carrots. I remember toys that had been given with love but only really made me cry. It was a place to stay, but it definitely was not home. The @savinggracematernityhome was nothing like that. This house was bright and warm and clean. It is a place that screams nurture. Love makes a home and everything here speaks to that. It broke my childhood memory and turned it around. I know the place in my childhood helped us when we were in danger, especially my mim, but it was not a home. It was not a space conducive of love. Recently, I helped set-up for their community clothing swap (yes, they’re still going on!). The last swap, though smaller due to COVID, still managed to divert 400 pounds from landfill! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m also re-committing myself to picking up trash on my walks. I’ll be gloved up, using a grabber, and picking up only what I can keep in a bag.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At some point, life will return to “normal,” so this is my way of dipping my toe back in the water. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Getting involved in your community—in big or small ways—is such a great way to expand your sustainable impact and meet like-minded people. I also think it’s a must-do. Though we have successfully pointed ourselves in the right direction for survival, projects that we were in the middle of at the time of the quarantine were stopped abruptly, and with uncertainty that those clients would be able to pay for them if and when we were able to finish. Broadway closed with little hope of reopening until deep into 2021. Film and TV production shut down. Designers planning their fall collections werent able to get us fabrics until those stores were allowed to reopen. During this time of Covid-19, she revises study materials she received from AWR. “I am glad to be in the AWR program because I got study materials while other pupils in my community didn’t get any. Bear Exploration Center held its first Curbside Library Pick Up last week. The librarian, Laurie Houlditch, has taught students how to use the online catalog and how to take Accelerated Reader tests.⠀ ⠀ Students are able to reserve five to 10 books in their reading range using the online catalog to keep at home for a month. Parents drive through the bus lane to pick up the books their students reserved.⠀ ⠀ The next Curbside Library Pick Up will be Sept. 17. In @nytimes today. Dozens of Detroit youth gathered to work on a street mural designed by artist Hubert Massey reading “Power to the People” along Woodward Ave. in Detroit, Michigan on June 17, 2020. Students from Detroit Public Schools and youth from Detroit Heals Detroit, Mint Artists Guild, and University Prep for Art and Design worked over a 24 hour period to paint the message of power and resilience. We are so happy that her support project first phase is getting done finally and she would now be sleeping comfortably in her house soon. Nesta sexta-feira (18/09), o grupo @maiscicloviaspiracicaba esteve em mais uma reunião na Prefeitura de Piracicaba em uma conversa com o agente de trânsito Ricardo Piton e a equipe de Comunicação. O objetivo da conversa foi planejar uma campanha de comunicação para o trânsito visando a conscientização de veículos e ciclistas que dividem as ruas. A campanha de educação para este trânsito compartilhado é o primeiro passo para que as pessoas saibam e respeitem as leis, cuide do próximo e que entendam a bicicleta como mais um meio de transporte. A conscientização também terá foco o próprio ciclista que também precisa se sensibilizar, respeitar as leis de trânsito e usar os equipamentos de segurança. O Mais Ciclovia também solicitou melhorias na Avenida Renato Wagner, como a iluminação e os buracos na ciclovia, o que já foi iniciado hoje e também a conscientização do uso de ciclovias na Avenida Cruzeiro do Sul. O trabalho também será realizado nos percursos rurais de Piracicaba, muito usado por ciclistas de lazer. O grupo Mais Ciclovias já começou um trabalho de mapeamento por trechos de possíveis ciclovias, ciclofaixas e locais estratégicos para o pedal em via rural. A Prefeitura também apresentou o projeto de ciclovias com um mapa viário, propostas de placas de sinalização e o evento Pedala Pira que não aconteceu devido à pandemia do Corona Vírus. De acordo com a Aliança Bike – Associação Brasileira do Setor de Bicicletas houve, em maio, um aumento de 50% das vendas de bicicleta comparada ao mesmo período do ano passado. O levantamento traz a informação que o uso da bicicleta na cidade impulsionou este crescimento trazendo um público novo que está buscando uma nova forma de se locomover. AV RENATO WAGNER foi alvo de vandalismo, em fevereiro, e teve todas as caixas de passagem quebradas, cerca de 4km de fiação elétrica. Segundo informações do site da Prefeitura, foi aberto licitação para reestabelecer o sistema de iluminação pública. Os serviços consistem na reconstrução e rebaixamento das caixas de passagem, reposição da fiação, religação dos circuitos e reforma dos padrões de entrada de energia elétrica. Chris and @dunordcs brought together hundreds of smart, caring individuals to run a food pantry that served a hundred households an hour while it was operating [here with Chris and Maria from DuNord and Emily from e4e. Folks donated fresh roasted coffee grounds and freshly harvested salad greens for our neighbors. Our Shega Foods bakery coworkers teenage sons helped out every day straight packing somewhere between 2-3 TONS of fresh produce into bags. Our coworkers at @e4ecatering held it down and took care of each other and continued to make delicious and safe food for our community. Beyond our small scope of work, we see so many people throwing in and cooking free food at the Memorial Site, donating at mutual aid locations, volunteering at food distribution sites - using food to fuel the revolution and make change. The power of individuals coming together has always been a part of our work. It is amazing. It is the start of how we create change. And now we need to use all the resources we have to serve community, to think big, to bring in more resources, and to hold our institutions and government accountable to meet this need in our community. NFD Captain Nate Barber @natebarber508 and his family have made close to 1,000 masks in the last 10 days. Every mask they make is donated to @ackhospital or to anyone else in the community who asks for one. Masks have also been given in bulk to island businesses still open during this trying time.
