Out today is a traditional murder ballad amongst creatures, a telling of the death and burial of poor Old Cock Robin and the trial of his killer. I found a very old version of this song years ago and followed its history back to an old English nursery rhyme. As these old poems and songs often go, it wound its way into the Appalachian tradition and I wanted to make my own interpretation. we had a lot of fun making this one! I have always been fascinated by the tradition of murder ballads, songs that are often at odds in their musical nature to their gruesome subject matter. Often they center in violence against women, and those women call from the grave to tell everyone what happened so justice can be done. I would like to one day write one from a woman’s perspective, but for now, we have the whimsical take on this tradition in cock robin. This arresting 19th Century portrait, according to historian Nigel Chancellor, is a window into how the British introduced the world’s fist vaccine to India, their biggest colonial enterprise. Dr. Chancellor identified the woman on the right in the painting as Devajammani, the second wife of Mysore’s Krishnaraja Wadiyar III. He says she is pointing to the part of her arm where she was vaccinated for smallpox. And he believes the painting was commissioned by the East India Company to encourage participation in the vaccination programme. The oil on canvas is dated to around 1805. For a long time its subjects were unknown - and thought to be dancing girls or courtesans - until Dr Chancellor stumbled upon it. Unwittingly, he says, the young queen played a role in the East India Company’s grand plan to inoculate Indians. It involved British surgeons, Indian vaccinators, scheming company bosses and friendly royals - none more so than the Wadiyars, indebted to the British who had put them back on the throne after more than 30 years of exile. 4.7.15 “ The Sacrifice Performed by Dakṣa” TRANSLATION: I did not know your full glories. For this reason, I threw arrows of sharp words at you in the open assembly, although you did not take them into account. I was going down to hell because of my disobedience to you, who are the most respectable personality, but you took compassion upon me and saved me by awarding punishment. I request that you be pleased by your own mercy, since I cannot satisfy you by my words. PURPORT: As usual, a devotee in an adverse condition of life accepts such a condition to be the mercy of the Lord. Factually, the insulting words used by Dakṣa against Lord Śiva were enough to have him thrown perpetually into a hellish life. But Lord Śiva, being kind toward him, awarded him punishment to neutralize the offense. King Dakṣa realized this and, feeling obliged for Lord Śivas magnanimous behavior, wanted to show his gratitude. Sometimes a father punishes his child, and when the child is grown up and comes to his senses, he understands that the fathers punishment was not actually punishment but mercy. Similarly, Dakṣa appreciated that the punishment offered to him by Lord Śiva was a manifestation of Lord Śivas mercy. That is the symptom of a person making progress on the path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It is said that a devotee in Kṛṣṇa consciousness never takes any miserable condition of life to be condemnation by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He accepts the miserable condition to be the grace of the Lord. He thinks, I would have been punished or put into a more dangerous condition of life due to my past misdeeds, but the Lord has protected me. Thus I have received only a little punishment as token execution of the law of karma. Thinking of His grace in that way, a devotee always surrenders to the Supreme Personality of Godhead more and more seriously and is not disturbed by such so-called punishment. - @srimadbhagavatam on Instagram
4️⃣ Krishnas Love for Butter: Krishna loved eating butter. As he grew older, Krishna started stealing butter from his own house and neighbours’. Yashoda hung up the butter so that Krishna wouldn’t be able to reach it. Slowly, other gopis also followed suit. Krishna and his friends weren’t the ones to give up easily. They worked out a solution to this. The next time they raided a house for butter, Krishna made his friends form a human pyramid. He reached the top and broke the pot of butter. The friends relished it, much to the anger and disappointment of the gopis! Moral - Focus on the Solution and not on the problem. Recalling something seized long ago from inside Aladdin’s cave, this charming bronze lamp was in fact dug up in Essex, England. Slipper-shaped lamps from the late Roman and Byzantine periods were common, though they were usually made from clay. Where are our Floating City fans?? Kents original Floating City was finished in 1991, and was a big hit at jewelry shows, a definite crowd pleaser... 💎 But after five years, thered been no buyers, and we were thinking that eventually wed donate it to a museum. As luck would have it, in a 1996 opening, the piece was noticed by Kenneth R. Trapp, the then curator of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Kenneth was familiar with my work from his previous post as curator of the Oakland Museum of California. 💎 The Floating City was presented to, and accepted for purchase by the Renwick Alliance, a group of art and craft collectors that raise funds for the purchase of work for the permanent collection of the Renwick Gallery. 💎 The Floating City has been displayed there several times since, and is a popular part of the collection. In 2005, it was also selected for inclusion in the book and traveling exhibition Masters of Their Craft, one of five exhibitions presented as Highlights from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. 💎 Floating City is also featured in the book Skilled Work. Everybody started running helter-skelter to save their lives. They went to Krishna for help. When Krishna faced the bull, he realised that it was possessed by a demon called Arishthasura. Krishna managed to tackle the bull and pierce its horns! Finally, the demon left the bull’s body and bowed to the Lord. He said that he was a disciple of Lord Brihaspati and had been cursed to become a bull as he had disrespected his teacher. Moral - Always respect your Teacher. Bhishma that time gave us the Vishnu Sahasranamam the 1000 glorious names of the Lord. 🙏😊I had the fortune of visiting this place near Kurukshetra 😊🙏 🔹️Pitamaha was thirsty and Arjuna dashed his bow to the ground and Mother Ganges oozed out from the spot to quench the thirst of her son Bhishma this place is preserved and so is the water body there, built as Ghat. 🔹️There is also a small temple which has idols of Bhishma lying on the bed of arrows- the Pancha Pandavas and Sri Krishna standing around him. 🔹️🔹️We chanted Vishnu Sahasranamam in the place of its origin and I consider this as my biggest blessing! She is an idealised heroine (nayika) waiting for her lover. Her direct gaze meets that of the viewer who takes the place of the hero (nayak) for whom she is waiting. Such imagery was not common in Mughal painting until the eighteenth century and reflects the influences of Rajput culture at the Mughal court. According to rajahdharma (‘the duty of kings’), a king is obliged to experience the four purusharthas (‘aims of life’), one of which is kama, sensual pleasure. Muhammad Shah’s chief court musician, Nimat Khan, known as Sadarang (1670–1748), composed numerous khayals, two-verse ‘love songs’, in which the Emperor is cast as the ideal lover or nayak for whom the nayika yearns. Here, the woman is depicted as a fictitious, ideal type with a narrow waist, full breasts and adorned with elegant jewels. Her form is reminiscent of sculptures of apsaras (‘celestial maidens’) on Hindu and Buddhist temple walls and her iconic pose appears throughout South Asian art. That she is imagined as Hindu is indicated by the ornamental orange and gold bindi between her eyebrows. Her figure is sensitively rendered with minute stippling, yet the background is far cruder. On this day in 1730, 363 Bishnois from Jodhpur were killed in Khejarli, when objected to felling of Khejri trees by the king. Day is celebrated as #ForestMartyrsDay. Scores of ground staff & officers have laid down their lives in protecting the ecological security of country. Can be called as first chipko movement of India. When king of Jodhpur sent teams to fell Khejri trees. Soon summons to a meeting were sent to 83 Bishnoi villages. The cry was “सिर साटे रुख रहे तो भी सस्तो जाण”. With this 363 bishnoi martyred to save trees led by Amrita Devi. To commemorate the day of this bishnoi massacre India observe this day as Forest Martyrs Day. The modern chipko movement was spread in years & is considered as eco-feminist movement, led by women. And a movement for ownership of resources based on gandhian principles. The month of Saawan (July-August) Folio from a Barahmasa series, by Shivdas Early 19th century, Jodhpur Barahmasa (literally, twelve months) illustrations were a popular genre of Indian painting which depict the characteristics of each month of the Hindu calendar. They are based on Barahmasa poetry where the nayika (heroine) urges her nayak (lover) not to leave by telling him of the joys of each month. After months of scorching heat, Saawan marks the beginning of the rainy season. In this folio from the Mehrangarh Museum collection, sparks of lightning with swirling thunderous clouds and rain can be seen. The landscape is lush with blooming flowers. With the coming of monsoon, swings are put up to enjoy the cool breeze and the smell of fresh earth. Maharaja Takhat Singh (r. 1843-73) as the nayak is seen celebrating the rains with a consort on a large wooden swing decorated with colored glass. Female attendants wait on the royal couple with trays of delicacies and flasks of wine. In the lower register of the painting, groups of women are also enjoying the rains on swings and riding horses. All eight #classicaldance forms are primarily region specific, from #manipur in the North-East to #kerala in the south, with their own distinct #rhythm, #beauty, #costume, #music, #language and #lyrics, though all are known to have descended from the #natyashastra and hence borrow heavily from #sanskrit language and literature. Of all the common things, #ghungroo, the ankle bell, is probably the most noticeable and important across all dance forms in India. In fact it is also used in most #folkdances of #india too, sometimes also as a piece of orchestra. Ghungroo, also known as #salangai in #tamil, are small metal bells, mostly made of #brass, strung together to form a #musical anklet, worn by the #dancers be it #bharatanatyam, #kathak, #kathakali, #kuchipudi, #manipuri, #mohiniyattam, #odissi, #sattriya or #chhai (included by @ministryofculturegoi). For ease of use, these metallic balls are fixed on a leather or cotton/velvet strap that can be easily worn around the ankle of the dancer. Framed by arches, three young women pose dramatically for Samuel Bourne’s camera. Labeled “Bayadères” (a French feminine noun for “dancers”), these women were known as “nautch girls” (“nautch” being the anglicized corruption of the Hindi wordnaach, meaning “dance”). In Victorian times many British and some Indians disapproved of many forms of dance. Lord Lytton (the British viceroy in India from 1876 to 1880) commented in a personal letter: “The young ladies [in England] are not allowed to dance lest they dance to perdition.” An anti-nautch movement was launched in 1882 and the movements immediate concern was to stop the occurrence of nautch parties—a popular diversion for many British men. After Babur, Jahangir is the only Mughal to have written a diary. The bell of justice was real. When he became the emperor, the first thing he did was to make a chain from the Agra fort, all the way till Yamuna and it was huge. It was made of approx 120 kgs gold. The contemporary accounts of travelers speak of how Jahangir sat in his public Durbar, which is where people used to come for justice and how the decisions he made were swift and sometimes brutal too. In 1853, under the tutelage of his long-time retainer Bhajan Lal (himself a Christian convert), he converted to Christianity at Fatehgarh with the approval of the Governor-General Lord Dalhousie. His conversion remains controversial, and it occurred before he turned 15. Handle for a Peacock-Feather Fly Whisk (morchal) India, Probably Lucknow or Delhi, Late 19th century Light green nephrite jade inlaid with silver foil-backed synthetic rubies set in gold and gilded copper This luxurious fly whisk handle is fashioned out of two pieces of light green nephrite jade. The top section is the mouth of the handle into which the now-missing whisk is secured. It is hollowed out and shaped like a flared lotus or tulip blossom. The juncture to the handgrip is just above the encircling collar, called a necklace, made of synthetic rubies set in gold. A metal tang connects the two parts. The terminal of the handle is in the form of a lotus bud. The overall shape of the handle replicates the constructed parts used for making metal, wooden, and ivory fly whisk handles. The decoration of the upper section of the handle consists of synthetic rubies set in gold chevrons, simplified floral motifs, and a scrolling vine around the bead molding above the juncture. In contrast, the chevrons on the lower section are made of gilded copper, which has been effaced from handling. The synthetic rubies, termed boules, are single crystal ingots made by the Verneuil process of flame fusion invented in 1877. The technique generally involves melting corundum powder over a kindling flame. The melted droplets crystallize into a cylinder or a pear-shaped imitation ruby or sapphire. The honorific fly whisk is an ancient pan-Asian accouterment of both earthly and divine sovereignty. When the handle is short and stout, like the present example, it is called a morchal and originally held peacock feathers used as a fan.
