Crystal Cosmos A series of images taken at 10x magnification of citric acid crystals that I grew on a few microscope slides. It’s an easy process! Just mix citric acid powder with equal parts isopropyl alcohol and distilled water, put on a plate of glass when dissolved and wait a few hours. The process works with other things too, including Epsom salts and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Put a polarizing filter on a flashlight, shine that through the slide and place another polarizing filter in opposition on top of the slide – you’ll then see the crazy colours that result from cross-polarizing these biaxially birefringement little gems! Shot with a @lumixcan S1R – my favourite camera ever. This was attached to a @novoflex tube lens and a Mitutoyo 10x microscope objective. If you’ve got a macro lens capable of 5x magnification you can achieve very similar results with a bit of cropping, or on a less-than-full-frame sensor. This was attached to a Novoflex CASTEL-MICRO automated focusing rail, which allowed focus to be found very easily and focus stacking because it’s impossible to get the slide perfectly parallel to the focal plane of the camera without a microscope stand. Even a single microscope slide could yield dozens of compositions, and no two crystals ever form the same way. Chefs... weve had it good, to all the generations before me , the greats, theyve set an incredible standard... theyve had incredible training and have legendary storys to tell.... I personally feel my generation will never get there... how can we, times have changed, chef culture is a different animal... quality of life has increased and yet quialty of training is at an all time low... our generation of chefs now have a new challenge... and if we fail we might be the last generation of chefs... not cooks... chefs. Its so important we as chefs look further.. and filter through the bullshit media, locate the source, and do the right thing, order sustainably.... its so important we as chefs make time for our juniors and inspire chefs to be... as our apprentices are almost absolute.... whether we like it not we have a responsibility to educate those around us... implore good practices and connect our communities to correct sources. Crawl artist feature: @anaislera from @bc_artscape Anais Lera is a French printmaker, painter and illustrator. She has recently moved to Vancouver, Canada, as a resident to continue her art practice and take part in the city art scene. Originally from south of France, she received her MFA from the National Art School of La Cambre in Brussels, Belgium in 2011. She works primarily in screen printing, digital and gouache painting. Her works focuses on meticulous intricate design inspired by nature. She creates luxuriant and colorful compositions confined in a circular form resembling the shape of an atom, a cell, a mandala, a planet... and mural installation integrating the natural movement of expansion. After her study she took the opportunity to travel for 3 years. She participated in international printmaking exhibition in Japan then lived in Australia for 2 year. She became an active member of Sydney’s Artists Residency Salmagundi Studios, exhibited in Stanley Street Gallery, in the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) for a printmaking and fanzine event and gave workshop in the Sydney Opera House. Back in Belgium, she had her first solo show and commissioned wall painting in the Cultural Center of Molenbeek. She took part in various renowned event in Belgium as the Art Biennale of Mons (2019). Then I slit the skin. I made a compound butter with garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, black pepper, parsley and chives. I then spread this super generously all over the inside and outside of the fish. I then stuffed the fish with sliced of lemon, onion and crushed garlic. The outside was sprinkled with a little Cajun seasoning and chilli flakes and a little bit more salt. - This was grilled on high for 10 mins on each side till the skin was crisp and charred. I ate this with some delicious coconut rice and broccoli 🥥 - Don’t be shy with the butter spread. Un nuevo estudio reportó que desde marzo –mes en el que se decretó la emergencia sanitaria por COVID-19– hasta el presente, unos 300.000 barbijos descartables ya se han acumulado en cuerpos de agua en Uruguay. Y se puede pensar que unos 22 millones podrían terminar en el mar al cabo de un año. El diario @elpaisuy releva que en este estudio, en las últimas ocho semanas se han estado detectando entre dos y tres mascarillas por kilómetro de playa en Canelones y Maldonado. Esto se traduce en el arribo de entre 670 y 1.600 unidades a los cauces de agua, orillas de lagunas y lagos próximos a centros poblados y en los 670 kilómetros de costa del Río de la Plata y océano Atlántico al día. Teniendo en cuenta que el peso de cada mascarilla es de aproximadamente cuatro gramos, lo anterior equivaldría a 880 toneladas adicionales a las 5.600 toneladas de residuos plásticos que llegan anualmente al ecosistema costero-marino del país. Para 2021, esto se podría traducir en la producción de más de 6.500 toneladas de basura marina, el 0,10% de la basura marina que arroja el mundo a los océanos todos los años, según declararon fuentes del estudio a El País. Esto puede generar que la “nueva basura marina” termine enredando a pingüinos, tortugas o delfines franciscana, algunas de las especies más vulnerables a esta problemática. Además, las mascarillas en el océano agravan la presencia de microplásticos. Hace unos días se halló un pingüino de Magallanes muerto en Brasil por haber ingerido una mascarila N95. Talk about a dinger 🤘🏼, Yesterday while I was at my dentists appt, I was placed in the first exam room, which coincidentally has one of my better-halfs original paintings hanging on the wall. By happenstance I had brought some stickers with me for Dr.Ford. Mid appointment he points at the framed painting on the wall and says, can you make that into a sticker?. Me knowing that Im so stubborn Ill pretty much figure out a way to accomplish any task pipes up, sure can!, and snapped a photo on my way out the door. We spent the rest of the afternoon processing Sundays deer and I secretly hunkered down after dinner to crank this new design out. He was totally surprised once I showed him what I had finished working on.
