This week on #TheAlleyCast, we’re learning about Philadelphia’s time as the Workshop of the World and the Great Migration, which brought so many Black workers to industries in Philadelphia. On the Alley, #128 became a stove factory in 1868 and residents worked in factories producing things like pearl buttons. In 1930, #135 was home to Nettie McCrae and Robert Morton, who had come North for work, in a garment factory and shovel factory, respectively. Did you know that the first NFL game was played here in Dayton, Ohio, nearly 100 years ago? The Dayton Triangles were a semi-pro football team, most of whose players had regular jobs and played football on the weekends for fun and little money. They were the successor to other teams in our area when formed in 1916 with the backing of three General Motors Companies controlled by industrialists, Colonel Edward Deeds and Charles Kettering, who had also purchased the land that became known as Triangle Park, for their employees recreation, and provided a field for the football team. On September 17, 1920, at a meeting of semi-pro teams held in Hays Hupmobile Automobile dealership in Canton, Ohio, the America Professional Football Association was founded. The Dayton Triangles were one of the first 4 teams to join the Association. The first game played between 2 league teams was played at Triangle Park on October 3, 1920, a game in which the Triangles defeated the Columbus Panhandles, 14 to 0. The first touchdown scored in the new Association was by Lou Partlow George “Hobby” Kinderline kicked the first point after. Their manager, Carl Storck, participated in the formation of the league at the Canton meeting. In 1921 he was named league secretary-treasurer; and in 1939 he became president of the NFL. In 1922, the Association, now with 12 member teams changed their name to the National Football League. Attendance at games played at Triangle Park was in the 2,000-5,000 range. As the league grew the Triangles would frequently travel by train to play teams that included the Chicago Bears, The NY Giants, and the Green Bay Packers. The growth of teams in large cities had much to do with the eventual financial failure of the Triangles. Commercial fishing has long been a source of income for families up and down the island, and French Creek is no exception. This image shows an undated photograph of the flats at French Creek; a mix of small boats with oars, outriggers, and outboards; and a few larger commercial fishing vessels in the background. Not the French Creek we know today, with its wharves and piers; warehouses and processing plant; and the market itself. On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied. For example, 442nd trainees from Camp Shelby would often visit for baseball games with the teams in Rohwer. Todays image depicts a flooded block at Rowher Concentration Camp. Archival pic from “Our Bombay,” a Dec. 1953 publication by Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) in which Prime Minister Nehru wrote: ‘A city, like a house, is not a mere collection of steel and brick, cement and mortar. It is the outward expression of the life of a community’. Marine Drive with 35 consecutive Art Deco sea facing buildings was the road to be on. The automobile brought speed, power, streamlined design, mobility and symbolised both success and affluence in a modern aspirational city. In these pics @karlbhote tells us we see a mix of primarily English and American cars. Convertibles were already falling out of favour, confirmed by only one seen at the bottom right, likely a Sunbeam Talbot drophead coupe. Since this is the pre Fiat Ambassador days, we see mostly foreign cars - majority of which were assembled in India. Ford had large scale assembly operations in Bombay. General Motors had similar operations in Sewri where Buick (retailed by Metro Motors), and Chevrolet cars (retailed by The Bombay Garage), rolled out. Dodge and Plymouth cars were assembled at Premier Automobiles Kurla facility, and retailed by The Bombay Cycle and Motor Agency which still stands at Sandhurst bridge. Across the road were the stunning modern Deco showrooms of Dadajee Dhackjee & Co, agents for Packard and Mercedes-Benz cars, at Shree Pant Bhuvan. The English were represented by Morris cars, sold by the French Motor Car Co. at New Queens Road and Hillman Minx cars were assembled by Automobile Products of India (API) at their Bhandup facility. Austin cars were sold by The Automobile Co. Ltd, also at New Queens Road. The Town Hall can be seen clearly, and to the right of it the yet unrestored Abbey. The buildings in the foreground are Saucel Brewery (left) and Saucel Distillery (right).
