Throwback to Berts article in Ironworks Magazine about Helical vs. Straight Cut Gears- In my youth I was fascinated with my Erector Set. The nuts, bolts, beams, plates, wheels, pulleys, axles and motors included in the Erector Set kit allowed me to construct anything my imagination could cipher. Legos never really did it for me because the snap-together plastic components were for sissies. Erector Sets had the fundamental building blocks for any industrial society because the components were steel and bolted together with nuts and bolts. The stuff I was constructing needed to be tough enough for an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser to run over it. In recent years I figured out my childhood obsession with Erector Sets. That is, the Erector Set gave me all the necessary components to construct mechanical assemblies from the ground-up. This is very much like what I do for a living today. I have a “kit” of hardware and design guidelines that I use to design new transmissions and drivetrains. Some of it is easy and some of it is more involved. For example, choosing bearings for a new product is easy because the choices are specified in the bearing catalog with performance perimeters and fitment tolerances all spelled out. Gears and shafts are not standard catalog items and must be designed for the specific application by assessing three criteria: Noise/whine, strength, and efficiency. Based on the qualitative importance of the three criteria, a decision is made to utilize a straight cut (also called spur gear) or helical gear. The last 2 missing parts are: verifying the roughness of the cylinder walls and get the crankshaft balanced with its rods and pistons. Clio 3 RS Gear Linkage kit is on its way!! We have finished development of our long awaited Clio 3 RS gear linkage kit. This innovative kit replaces the gearshift cables with a rod change linkage. Any cable shifter can never match the accuracy and feel of shift that a direct linkage has due to the friction and flex of cables. Our kit features a unique chassis mounted bellcrank and A arm mechanism behind the gearbox with our traditional in car tower arrangement, using spherical, ball, and rod end bearings throughout to make a shift that is as accurate and precise as possible. The in car shifter has a billet alloy spherical bearing carrier, (AKA Armitage for good reason!). The reverse lockout is a plastic insert (this will be black on production models) and reverse is engaged by lifting the carbon and alloy tube up and over the insert. The linkage rod itself fits snugly between the floor of the car and the exhaust heatshield with no modification necessary. The front A arm and bellcrank assembly bolts into existing points on the chassis with no drilling. This has been through multiple iterations of design over nearly two years, but were now happy this is the ultimate shifter available for Clio 3 RS models. The feel and accuracy is simply stunning! These photos are of a pre-production version so there are a couple of tweaks to make and the finished version will be along soon. Price is to be confirmed but our kit will be around half the cost of an uprated cable shift mechanism.
