What I’ve always enjoyed about “Acrobat” (2003-2009) is its performance aspect. The lobster is displaying its acrobatic skills while revealing all the polarities that we observe in the world and ourselves. Who is the performer, and who is the audience; are they interchangeable? I also think about Gypsy Rose Lee doing a burlesque fan dance when I look at the lobster’s tail, or H.C. 🌟art by @fadingcreativity🌟 . Body types aren’t trends. The ideal body changes so much that it often feels like the beauty standard is anything but who we are. Right now, it’s all about the Kim Kardashion booty. But, just a decade ago, women were wondering if “these jeans make my butt look big?” Now, if these jeans make your butt look big, it is a huge compliment. In the 60s, thin and straight bodies were in. But, ten years before, Mariyln Monroe’s hourglass figure was the epitome of beauty. How does society expect women to change and fit into these narrow ideals within just a couple of years? They can’t. And it would be unrealistic to think so. When we stop equating our bodies with happiness, it is a lot easier to love ourselves. Being a size two 10 years ago or being thicc in this current age will not make our lives more fulfilling. If anything, the less judgement we pass on someone else’s body, the less we give to our own. So, this is your daily reminder to not turn what we are born with into fads. We were not made to subject ourselves to this concept of a body trend. One day, society will realize there is no perfect body (because there isn’t). But for now, be kind to yourself and realize how unrealistic these standards are. Ghost in the Shell meets #IrisVanHerpen 👾 Took me awhile to finish this, and even longer before cleaning it up digitally, but here it is (finally!) 😅 Ghost in the Shell (from the OG movie to ALL the Stand Alone Complex series) is one of my fave franchises of all time and contrary to critic consensus when the 2017 live action film came out, I absolutely loved it. This week for our very first AOTW - Niki de Saint Phalle, a multimedia sculpture artist whose works tend to air towards big and colorful! Nikis primary works focus on the female form and feminism, in a style she called nouveau réalisme. She is most famous for her Tarot Garden, a large-scale set of 22 wondrous sculptures based upon the traditional tarot deck. Her garden is located in Tuscany and has been open to the public since 1998. I suspect it’s all linked on some level. The attitudes/dynamics at play are always the same, but the problem becomes much bigger when the bullies are also those with the power to enforce law, violently and without accountability. Happy Birthday for yesterday, @maryburgers ! ❤❤❤ I know we made some murmurs about how I should make an album cover for you, but dont worry, this isnt it! I just wanted to break the ice on getting used to drawing you (only...2 years into our relationship?? Better late than never...) Ive said before that youre so beautiful that I always hestitate to draw you because Im worried that either it wont look as gorgeous as you do in real life, or that peole will just think Ive drawn a cartoon of a beautiful woman -- somewhere between Jessica Rabbit and a Disney princess, all dollfaced curves and long eyelashes. The first time I tried, I panicked, drew a simple cartoon in felt tip pens, and decided to leave it at that. Anyone whos seen the original photograph that this drawing is based on can see that the real Mary has larger eyes, fuller lips and a sweeter expression. I was trying something with soft coloured pencils in the style of an artist I admire, @loukoumh , and it didnt quite work out. But thats okay. There will be other drawings. Cover that I illustrated for an issue of Whats The Time, Mrs. Woolf?, a zine put together by the amazing @sarahkfogg and me back in the day. This artwork is an old favourite that I always wanted to turn into merch or a fabric print or something. Somehow I usually draw things with a very soft, sketchy finish, so its unusual for me to produce anything this bold and graphical, (and with a repeat pattern, too! I had so much time to be exploratory back in those days. Somebody - was it @karriefransman ? - once said of my portfolio that you couldnt tell that all of the pieces were by the same person. Which I saw at the time as an achievement, but its also a drawback because having a cohesive visual style makes you marketable. Not that I mind much about being marketable these days. Its taken the best part of a decade to get enough distance from my Illustration degree to realise that making any kind of money - yet alone a living - from it just may not be for me, and thats okay. Y mi preferido: “es ley de vida”. Sí, la muerte existe, he pagado 6000 pavos y es ley de vida.⁣ ⁣Aunque considero más peligrosos a los entusiastas que te dicen que la muerte trae un regalo y que crisis en chino significa oportunidad. También nos encontramos a los que te iluminan con frases de sabiduría yogui tea: “el aliento es la voz de tu alma”, “usa tu cabeza para vivir con corazón o “esta vida es un regalo”. I painted her bubbles in opaque and transparent layers, as representation of all the ways we speak to ourselves and each other. Saya memotong mengikuti outline figure lalu memberi aksen torehan-torehan garis untuk mempertegas gesturenya . Saya tidak begitu menyukai hasil akhirnya karena pewarnaan nya masih kurang rata, warnanya tidak solid sesuai ekspetasi saya. Ditambah teknis pewarnaan kuas saya yang buruk. . Untuk berikutnya saya akan perbaiki di teknis pewarnaan dengan pipet jarum dan mengganti dengan tanah yang lebih kuat. Tanah ini berwarna putih, ringan dan cepat kering tapi cenderung berubah bentuk saat dibakar. Rancana saya untuk seri berikutnya menggunakan campuran pigment dan tanah. . The current situation at the EU Borders, especially in the Camp Moria, is devastating to all of us. The EU governments aren’t reacting quickly enough while the people in Moria are suffering and in dire need of financial support. That’s why we, a small group of European photographers, have decided to organize another charity print sale through NEU Workshop. Each print will be in A4 format on Ilford Studio Satin 250 gsm and sold for 25€, shipping included. They’ll be available for pre-order from the 21st until the 28th of September. We will split the donations between Seawatch (@seawatchcrew) and MVI (Medical Volunteers International, @mvi_greece) for long term systematic and local help in Moria.
