Cuando comienzas una pintura, es algo que está fuera de ti. Al terminarla, parece que te hubieras instalado dentro de ella Fernando Botero. 🌈 Y si, un poco eso siento, la pintura se instala dentro mío, y yo dentro de ella, acompañadas por los sucesos de la vida. 🌠 Este cuadro lo comencé hace unos 3 años, y lo termine ahora en una Pandemia, esos tres años estos pajaros esperaban pacientes a poder tener su mundo completo un día. 🐣 No se bien que quise contar con esto, pero se que trata de un mundo o una sociedad miserable donde todos están en la suya, mientras al medio vemos un pájaro angelado lleno de amor y naturaleza, pidiendo un poco de consciencia. 🐦 El cuadro esta pintado con acrílico sobre tela, y al final le pegué algunas cositas varias. 🐙 Los re aliento a todos a que pinten y se expresen como puedan, realmente es mágico lo que uno va sintiendo en el proceso. 🐇 - @sofiaqu_ on Instagram

One year ago today was my first appearance in public with my art. It’s shocking at how far I have come in the art world, especially during a pandemic. I’m so grateful for everything in life. So Overwhelmingly grateful for it all. 4 years ago I was living in 24 hours a day of PTSD terror. Suicide watch. Mental health ward visits. 5 to 10 hours of sleep per week. 2 years ago, Woodland art saved my life. And then last year, Woodland art gave me a brand new life. Ochi Projects is pleased to present Normal Girl, a collaborative exhibition by Mikki Yamashiro and Machine McLaughlin. The exhibition is featured in our online viewing room from September 8 - 21, 2020. In this body of work the artists reflect on how Quarantine has mirrored their angsty teen years of isolation in Southern California–no car, stuck at home with nothing good on tv. The works share a sense of being trapped by the constructs of normativity, grasping for ways to express queer identity and political ideas, using the limited avenues available. For Yamashiro, the exhibited works pull from the messiness and confusion of adolescence and the process of becoming politicized. Trying to find the silver lining when everything just feels fucked. Wondering what to say, when there is already so much being said. A grasping to understand a world that does not make sense, and trying to find a language of rage, when all that is available is pop culture. An overwhelming feeling, Yamashiro muses, that despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage. Yamashiros yarn paintings blend 90s and early 2000s pop-culture iconography with conspiratorial political captions, relating the practice to the contemporary memification of art, politics, culture, where everything is pushed to a point of over-simplification that becomes unable to hold nuance. Yamashiro frames her work as repackaging/rebranding what pop culture and media provide into something a little more complicated, something a little less consumable. McLaughlins work evokes similar experiences of being a preteen, a time when they felt their inner identity colliding with gender expectations. They fuse materials and imagery associated with both hyper feminine and hyper masculine presentation, creating sculpture in the form of sloppy trophies that celebrate this balance. Working across mediums, from painting to concrete, McLaughlin similarly employs iconographies from their youth, layering signifiers into teetering stacks of paper pulp, cinder blocks and other materials and collage-like canvases bursting with psychedelia-inspired patterns and pop cultural references of yesteryear. - @ochiprojectsla on Instagram

September is Chiari Malformation Awareness Month! Yesterday I shared how my Chiari diagnosis began & today I’d like to elaborate on my journey a bit. 💜 One important factor to recognize is emotional trauma (stress) as a catalyst to the onset of symptoms. When my symptoms started, my reality had literally crumbled. My parents began a nasty divorce & my mother told me that my dad was not my biological father. It was topically surreal, I remember laughing when she told me, but deep inside I was crushed. Funny enough, I have a memory of meeting my dad, but it never clicked until then. Turns out my mother had gotten artificially inseminated during a prior marriage & my biological father was actually a donor! My legal last name hidden from me, I did not grow up as McPherson. No sooner had I heard this cataclysmic news than my body began failing me & I was being wheeled into surgery mere weeks later. This mental trauma manifesting itself physically is astoundingly phenomenal and is no coincidence (this has been an inspirational concept in my art for many years). The bright side of this is I am lucky in love that I have had 3 fathers! 💜 During my first Chiari decompression in 1990 they did a craniotomy (removed part of the base of my skull), duraplasty (opened up the brain dura & expanded it), a laminectomy (removed parts of the top 2 congenitally fused vertebrae) - all to make room for my spinal fluid to flow properly. It saved my life. The syrinx shrank and my spinal fluid flowed! Unfortunately they didn’t realize they exacerbated the instability in my naturally unstable neck. Nowadays Chiari surgeons know they need to fuse the craniocervical junction during the Chiari surgery when they see signs of instability. Almost immediately my cervical spine began to collapse into kyphosis, revealing it’s slow deterioration through my annual MRI scans. I wouldn’t fully realize the gravity of this precarious situation until earlier this year, when all the neurosurgeons I saw recommended a full neck fusion to keep my spinal cord from being crushed, and I dove deep into researching WHY. 💜 Continued in the comments... - @taramcpherson on Instagram

After a sleepless week of completing the finishing touches and driving the portrait 10 hours south to Sydney to be photographed and framed, I am pleased to say that ‘Bruce Pascoe- Dark Emu’ was finally completed- signed, sealed and delivered! It has been such an incredible and eye opening journey meeting Bruce and learning about Indigenous ways of approaching sustainable growing in this country. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. In Spring 2020, the @ldmgallery should have hosted visiting artist Joel Werring, a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. When I was 17, I was very torn about going to art school. I was a practical kid with very practical parents, but I loved making things. Mostly, I loved to draw. When I took the leap to go to art school it was scary as hell. And even though I loved it, art school never made sense to me. I always felt like the one kid in the room asking, But how do I pay for this? How do I make this real? I struggled with this for years, but kept going. I got a job. Kept making my art. Discovered I loved teaching. Did my MFA. Thats where the questions got bigger, and messier, and weirder. As I began teaching in higher education, I felt like the way we were training young artists made no sense. It presented such a narrow path of what was possible - what to aspire to - what success looked like. It made me doubt my value as both an artist and a teacher. After 7 years as an art student and 15 years teaching art at every possible level, I see an opportunity to build something better. A year ago, when I left academia to work as a coach, I wrote a newsletter about my problems with the current art school model. As a college educator, I noticed my students had big questions that were going unanswered: What does it mean to be an artist these days? Why should I go into debt to study art? How can art-making be a sustainable part of my life? And I dont think college students are the only ones with questions. Ive asked myself these same questions in recent years. What kind of conversations do I want to have about my work? What are all the ways we can show up as artists outside of just selling things that hang on walls? Over the last year, Ive talked to hundreds of you about your creative aspirations and challenges. Turns out, you have questions too: You want to develop your voices, but youre overcome with self-doubt. You want to engage in thoughtful discussion about making things, but you dont know where to find it. But more importantly, you want to take your creative work seriously, to actualize your ideas, and going back to “art school” isn’t an option. Many of you have commented on the stunning illustrations in Jabberwocky. They were created by Charles Santore, a leading illustrator with a storied career. In the mid-1980s he shifted from illustrating TV Guide covers to classic childrens books, including Aesops Fables and The Wizard of Oz. His works are in collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The National Portrait Gallery, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. Jabberwocky was his final project before he passed away last year. This kind, creative, introspective woman, Gloria Vanderbilt, passed away one year ago today. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to photograph her and her work on multiple occasions. She was always inviting and intriguing. This is a portrait I took of her in 2012, when she was a youthful 88 years old, shortly before one of her final exhibits. Many pieces in the show were inspired by “hiraeth,” a Welsh word with an ambiguous meaning that she described to me, beautifully, in the words of a writer she admired named Val Bethell. “It is a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; a nostalgia, the grief, for the lost places in your past ... the language of the soul, the call from the inner self, half forgotten, it speaks from the rocks, from the earth, from the trees, and in the waves. • Hervé Yamguen __________ Artiste de l’exposition « Kamerun », Hervé est né en 1971 à Douala. Il vit et travaille toujours dans la capitale économique du Cameroun. Hervé Yamguen est un artiste pluridisciplinaire; plasticien, sculpteur et auteur dont le champ d’expression est aussi bien l’écriture (plusieurs publications) que les arts plastiques. Il a fait quelques incursions dans la photographie et la performance qu’il a surtout effectuée dans l’espace public. Son travail a été montré dans différents pays du monde. Plusieurs fois en France, en Allemagne, en Côte d’Ivoire. Il réalise régulièrement des scénographies pour le théâtre et a conçu et accueilli les premières scénographies urbaines à New-Bell, un partenariat entre Scur’k et le Cercle Kapsiki, un collectif d’artistes qu’il a co-fondé. Le cercle a ouvert, à New-Bell, la K Factory un lieu de résidences d’artistes transdisciplinaires, une galerie d’art contemporain, et a animé ce quartier par plusieurs évènements artistiques de haut niveau. Un manifeste de son engagement politique, artistique et social dans son quartier et son pays. Récemment intronisé notable dans le village de son père, il renoue avec les codes des rituels et coutumes, tout en conservant sa posture d’artiste contemporain. Reposted from @laurenashleighb THURSDAY THOUGHTS: ✨ “You are ONLY 27 years old, Lauren.” That’s something that my brain repeats to me everyday. Because I spent so much of my life expecting to be married and to have a family by now, among other things. I have literally been told by multiple strangers “Oh no! Your time is running out!” thus, the rambles you are about to read, if you stay with me ☺️ ✨ I spent 18 years within a bubble and then 4 more years at an institution where “ring by spring” was the norm and almost pressured, and having babies is a woman’s job once married. The majority, if not all, of my friends from CU are engaged or married, pregnant or parents, homeowners, etc. Meanwhile I’m trying to kill it as a barista/art instructor/small business-owning painter, who will probably be renting where she lives for quite a few more years. And there’s no shame in that! But more often than not, I feel like I’m failing at doing what’s in front of me because of old habits and things I’ve been taught throughout my childhood and young adult life. ✨ I promise this is not a plea for pity, nor am I asking for praise. I’ve especially learned in the last year, as a single woman, that all of those things I listed above don’t equal success. They may be some of my deepest and strongest desires, but they aren’t my sole purpose. That’s pretty liberating and empowering honestly! ✨ I’m so thankful I didn’t get married at 22. I’m so thankful I didn’t marry my first love. I’m thankful to have just celebrated 5 years outside of abuse. I’m thankful for the last year of singleness. Even though there were so many dark moments within all of it. ✨ I’ve deconstructed my life, moved, and rebuilt myself and my surroundings quite a few times since graduation. Multiple identity crises 😅 For a long while I have minimized my pain and the trauma. I’m sure I’ll continue to struggle with it. But I’m riding on todays sporadic confidence boost and hoping to encourage someone. ✨ It may suck sometimes. But it’s OK where I’m at right now. At 27. And it’s okay where you’re at too. Today is almost 60 years from the passing of a modern art giant of the last century, #GeorgesBraque. Braque had two great themes in his work, still life and interiors. And it’s the latter that constitutes the topic of his last iconic series of paintings, The Studio Paintings. Además, es más cómoda y sana, y aunque trabaje igual que antes, o más, sinceramente me noto con menos estrés. Ahora mismo acabo de terminar la segunda sesión de un motivo que monté ayer con una cabeza de marioneta india, unas caracas también indias, hojas de naranjo y cráneos. Fuera la luz es blanca y escucho cómo el sonido del agua de la piscina se mezcla con el piar de los pájaros.
