Until youve lived it, its hard for someone to understand the pain and trauma that comes with a pregnancy loss at any stage whether its the first trimester or the last. You create a bond with that baby the minute you know its in you. The excitement builds, you buy things, you pick names. And then, out of nowhere, for no reason, its just gone yet your body still hasnt caught up to the change. . To all the people in our community whove suffered loss, we see you and were so sorry. We need to normalize pregnancy loss in the sense that we need it to be OK to talk about. We need women to not feel shame. About 15% of pregnancies end in miscarriage in the first trimester. That number is large, but it still feels isolating. . Rather than telling you that miscarriage happens, or to just keep trying, were here to tell you that its OK to sit in your pain for a while and grieve. Meet Viv | When I was 21yrs old, I was accepted into a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I applied to the fellowship when I was a 20yr old Senior in University. I was the youngest person and first black woman accepted into the fellowship. I was also the only person accepted directly from Uni. The scientific advisory committee was impressed with my knowledge in biological sciences and my bold step to declare my interest in Biosecurity and Biosafety at such a young age. This is a field that is mostly pursued by individuals that are much further along in their scientific careers. During my time in the fellowship, I had to wrestle with my feelings of inadequacies and “imposter syndrome”. Did I deserve to be there? Was I smart enough to make it through this intensive program? I was very worried about being the “first” because I did not want to do poorly and affect future opportunities for other young students. What I learned was that pressure can either burst a pipe or create a diamond! 8yrs after graduating from the fellowship, I was awarded the “Dr. Billy Richardson Young Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Researcher” award for my work in International Biodefense. My advice to all individuals pursuing a career in STEM, is to always push the status quo, never doubt your potential and do not be afraid to pursue opportunities that may not seem like they fit your current resume. - @stemforfem on Instagram
