Better late than never! We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We ate either gelato or shaved ice every single day, had a lot of amazing pizza, and learned quickly that we were eating nowhere near enough veggies. When we weren’t stuffed or napping, we were swimming, making some bomb sandcastles or exploring. We survived very bad sun burns, enjoyed HGTV on repeat and fell in love with Kauai and the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. To end the trip we watched fireworks with the locals on the forth of July and taught Ryan how to float well enough to show him the joys of snorkeling. Wim: ‘Alles speelde zich af rond kerst. Ik had last van een ingegroeide teennagel waar ik echt eens mee naar de dokter moest. In m’n achterhoofd speelde ook die andere klacht. Ik plaste al een tijdje niet goed uit. Ik besprak met de dokter dat het misschien goed was om de PSA-waarde in mijn bloed te meten. Een hoge waarde kan betekenen dat je prostaatkanker hebt. Dat bleek te kloppen. In 1 klap werd mijn leven totaal overhoop gegooid. Alsof ik op een trein sprong die maar doordenderde en waarvan ik de rem niet kon vinden. Een van de ergste dingen was dat ik moest vertellen aan mijn kinderen Joost (15) en Femke (13) dat ik ziek was en niet meer beter zou worden. Zij hadden kort daarvoor allebei hun opa’s verloren. Een daarvan had slokdarmkanker en daar hebben ze echt een schrikbeeld aan overgehouden. Het gesprek was hartverscheurend. De kinderen hebben ontzettend veel gehuild. Maar nu gaat het gelukkig goed met ze. We hebben het er ook niet constant over. We zijn vooral bezig met leven. En genieten van de tijd die we hebben. En toen kwam corona. Mijn vrouw en ik werken allebei in de zorg, dus we merken van dichtbij wat een leed dit virus met zich meebrengt. Misschien gek, maar ik heb mezelf nooit als extra kwetsbaar gezien door mijn ziekte. Ik werk op de ambulance. In Brabant nog wel, wat in het begin de corona-brandhaard was. Ik heb wel met mijn baas afgesproken dat ik geen ritten meerijd met mensen die misschien corona hebben. Tuurlijk zet corona de wereld op z’n kop. Maar uiteindelijk komt er een vaccin waarmee we het virus onder controle krijgen. En wordt die gekke wereld waarin wij leven weer normaal. Mijn ziekte gaat niet meer over. Ik hou me bezig met de vraag die iedere kankerpatiënt misschien herkent: hoeveel tijd heb ik nog? Juist daardoor geniet ik van elk moment. Van Joost die met pretoogjes naar me kijkt als ik thuiskom en een stevige knuffel geeft. Of Femke die me vraagt haar nog eens lekker in te stoppen. Nog even samen buiten op de loungeset dat laatste avondzonnetje op je gezicht laten schijnen. Kleine dingen? It is said that over 70% of all adults have experienced some sort of traumatic experience and in reality these figures are still inaccurate as so many people go on untreated and undocumented. ⠀ ⠀ Trauma is a silent epidemic killing more people than any other illness. This is because trauma can cause diseases, mental health problems, eating disorders and make you sick. ⠀ ⠀ Our emotions and our thoughts talk to our cells and create our reality. Almost all trauma victims will suffer from addictions, drugs, alcohol, food, porn, bad relationship and gambling as a way to escape the pain they are suffering. Children who have experienced trauma in the first 10 years of life are 80% more likely to be involved in violent relationship, take drugs and abuse alcohol and suffer with anxiety, depression, OCD, panic attacks, PTSD and many other mental illnesses. ⠀ ⠀ The thing about trauma is that everyone’s experience, although similar affect each and everyone of us differently. There is no one size fits all trauma. Therefore treatment has to be very specific to each person. From my own journey healing trauma, I have seen and experienced that almost everyone has a trauma and many multiple. So many of us have parts that are unhealed and if you have experienced recurring traumas this can really mess you up. ⠀ ⠀ The amazing news is with the right work, support and love we can all heal our traumas ❤️ my traumas include: - violence, addiction, near death experience, car crash, loss of a loved one, betrayal, childhood trauma and abuse, abandonment, grief, illness ⠀ ⠀ If I can heal and be on my journey towards healing so can you 🙏🏻❤️ - @healwithlucy on Instagram
