Let’s talk why we say Dismantle instead of reform the police descend from groups made to enforce the genocide of native people, who became groups to catch runaway enslaved people, to post-slavery forces to capture freed Black people for misdemeanors & put them in prison to protect white wealth, to the prison industrial complex & the school to prison pipeline, to countless atrocities & warfare on Black communities ... all ensuring slave labor became prison labor & white wealth was protected. the police have never been made to protect and serve. we cannot “reform” the police. efforts all across american history have been made to reform the police and it has not worked. Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement & Trayvon Martin’s murder, all that has come of “reform” is more funding going to police departments. Money that barely goes to ‘reform’ and goes to militarization against us, the people they supposedly ‘protect & serve’ , and this corrupt organization pockets. 50% of my city’s budget goes to the cops, with similar numbers across the country. You cannot reform an organization built solely to protect the upper class wealth, white wealth, the 1%’s wealth - not Black folks, not other marginalized folks, not to protect and serve the general people’s interests. The cops need to go. Of course they can’t overnight, but that’s why we are in this for the long term. ‘Defund. Disarm. Dismantle’ are steps. We must slowly drain funding for the police, put it into good community safety (healthcare, mental healthcare, rape/domestic abuse crisis centers, childcare, education, etc), and build up new community safety teams so we can keep our own neighborhoods safe. We continue to watch, as many do, the coverage of pain-filled protests happening in cities across America as its citizens cry out for justice and demand safety and accountability from their government. And while this has been happening, we’ve seen some say that gamers, specifically, should “stay in their lane,” and that politics isn’t an issue where our voices are welcomed. Well, that’s complete bullshit and we’re tired of hearing it. The systematic oppression, aggression, fear, and brutality that is placed at the doorstep of Black Americans, as though it was their birthright, has been unacceptable for a very long time. As humans committed to equality and justice we all must speak a better world into existence and work to bring that world to reality. It is too easy to join a lobby, queue up, and leave the problems of the world behind. But we must remember that injustice and brutality continue even when we can lose ourselves in-game. We must remember that the only solution for racism will be found in the collective, proactive actions taken to oppose it. The painful truth is that George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others should be alive, instead of names in an ongoing bloody chapter of our history. That chapter will end when all of us take responsibility, stand together, and decide that enough is enough. If we all dig deep inside ourselves we will find the courage to stand up against the blatant discrimination and brutal treatment of Black Americans at the hands of the police. We’ll find the courage to stand in our own discomfort as we wrestle and reconcile our respective fears with the responsibility to do what is so obviously right. I cannot believe it’s been 2 years since the world lost J Gold. He was iconic. He was LA. He was gold.💛In case u don’t know the story behind this illustration /print, here it is...I had just judged the @kcrwgoodfood pie contest with him a few months before and I psyched myself up to go introduce myself to him at the very end (there are a lot of judges and our categories didn’t overlap)and it went better than I imagined. When I started to explain who I was, he cut me off and said he already knew, had a tote bag I designed for KCRW and that he liked my art (say whaaaat?!)😱. He complimented me on a passion project I did the year before, where I illustrated highlights from episodes of Good Food, but then he gave me this kinda sad, pouty face and said he noticed that his restaurant reviews weren’t included in any of the illustrations. OOPS! That WAS true, but like, there were more timeless things to illustrate each week than a restaurant review. He said “I get it” but he was still kinda waiting to see me draw something he said on air. I excitedly and immediately promised him that I’d draw him something special and it’d be cool! He acted like that would make up for it and said he’d like that. Then I asked for a photo and made a joke about wishing I had on suspenders, to pull out and snap for the photo. He didn’t skip a beat and said I could pull his out for the photo, if I wanted. 😂 I was into it (swipe to see the photo)! When I heard the news of his passing I thought of what I promised him, then spent the next day going through episodes of Good Food from 2017 and listened to ALL his reviews. I pulled out the lines I thought he’d like and created this tribute illustration. I hate that I didn’t get to make this before, so he could see it and hopefully be stoked, but better late than never. And this wasn’t gonna be a print until all of you on IG asked for it because you wanted a little piece of him in your homes. So thank you, that means a lot. It’s the end of September which for me means it’s been 1 year since I told my abuser to get lost and to never speak to me again. I drew this in my private journal during the height of his abuse. It was not meant to be shared but with September also being about suicide prevention I hope that my honesty in this illustration can help others feel less alone. For a while there I didn’t think I’d make it to a year. I thought terminating our relationship would instantly make me happy but instead it only revealed how many toxic relationships I have endured through so much of my life that I always thought was “normal” For an entire year I’ve been unlearning unhealthy patterns and building myself up. It’s been a lonely road—I’ll be honest. I expected more support in this journey but the road to healing only has a seat for one. So this is me patting myself on the back. Earlier this month I had in opportunity to reopen this Pandora’s box and I choose not to which was a huge win for me. I don’t need closure from him or need to know what he’s up to or who he’s manipulating now. I don’t need anything from him because instead of pain when I think of him now I feel...nothing. And that’s the greatest feeling of all. I wish I could go back in time to those weeks—months I could barely get out of bed and tell her she’s gonna make it. So instead if you are reading this now in the depths of your depression for thinking you’re not going to make it...you will.
