Medicine ball throwing. _ When, why and what? _ Following a post from @tread_athletics , (see the clip) I thought Id add my take on it. @drheenan also designed a great visual table on its value for throwing athletes. _ In simple terms you train outside competition the factors that dont get trained in the skill itself. During competition you train the factors that dont get stimulated during play itself. _ Training methods along the force velocity are on a sliding scale. When you have a large volume of one, you need less volume of another. _ 🔑When you bowl a large volume, you throw less med balls _ 🔑When you dont bowl a large volume, you throw a large volume of med balls _ 🔑OU weighted ball bowling sits in between both and can be seen as the ultimate transfer bridge _ During season, speed is taken care of. In large volume. So there is no need for a large volume of med ball throwing . Only a small amount as part of the RAMP warm up process. I would take the fast bowlers to the other end of the continuum. MAX STRENGTH WORK. Especially ISOMETRIC TRAINING (CNS dominant and non muscular trauma) _ Out of season, when actual bowling itself is at the lowest volume, its a great time to add more power to the engine and increase the volume of medicine ball throwing. 300-500 reps per week _ During the preparation phase I would train every capacity along the FV curve but the volume of each tier will vary. COMPLEX SYSTEM. Following the Bondarchuk system med ball throwing would sit in SPE or SDE depending on the throw type and what part of the skill stability paradigm it sits. Any medicine ball throw would be far slower than bowling itself. Arm speed when bowling based on @motusglobal is approx 700-900 d/s angular momentum which equates to about 25-30ms linear momentum. Nothing we will ever do outside the skill itself will replicate the speeds of bowling. Which is why bowling is the ultimate plyometric and ballistic EXERCISE. _ But if youre not bowling, the second best option is CONSTRAINED OU WEIGHTED BALL BOWLING, Kneeling constraints and Wall run and gun etc. The 3rd best is medicine ball throwing. _ #medicineballthrows - @steffanjones105 on Instagram

The Other is most often a threatening figure, particularly in cultural contexts that have developed around tension, violence, and traumas. As a result, our neurobiological and socially conditioned defensive mechanisms have become finely honed to attack and destroy, to discipline and punish. Leaning into empathy, and therefore deeper and more complex understanding of the other requires a base amount of safety, compassion, and most of all curiosity - the desire to know why. The skills of feeling into safety, curiosity, and compassion have not been encouraged in contemporary activist culture. A powerful rhetoric around attack, conversion, and rescuing has been developed - and in some cases, repurposed from older religious and ethical traditions - that serves our basic instincts for self-preservation. This rhetoric, while useful in situations requiring decisive action toward self-defense, can also entrap us and prevent us from expanding our capacity for inquiry and our tolerance for difference and transgression. The narrow lens of understanding the Other as Enemy, as Problem, and as Victim, offers us some simple answers and is therefore appealing. The much wider and more ambiguous lens on the Other as a whole human being, or even more frightening, as sacred kin, can be terrifying to our sense of self. Why should we extend our curiosity and compassion to those who have harmed and dehumanized us? In the first place, I believe that there is an essential element of our own dignity and person-hood that can be reclaimed in an attempt to understand the Other. It is intuitive that safety enables empathy, but perhaps the reverse can also be true, that safety follows empathy. Furthermore, a worldview dominated by suspicion of the Other gives rise to an expanding definition of Other - we begin to see the frightening Enemy in those we hold dear. Our world shrinks and becomes an ever more frightening place. The reality of a reverse diet: seeing the scale go down is nice buttttt it’s not the norm, nor should it be expected 👏🏽👏🏽 As coaches, weve taken hundreds of clients through reverse diets, and truthfully, everyones body responds differently. Sure, some outliers may lose a bit of weight. But, MOST clients can see either no/little scale change OR they may even see the scale go up. AND THAT IS OKAY! Are you progressing more if the scale drops? Are you failing if the scale stays the same? Does weight gain mean youre broken? NO, NO, & NO! Usually, before we start reversing a client, they *nervously* ask what to expect with their weight while going through a reverse diet. And truth is, like most things in the fitness world... it depends. There are a LOT of different factors that play into both HOW LONG your reverse will take and also how your body will respond. • time spent dieting / yo-yo dieting • training / cardio history • length and intensity of diets • your age, height, muscle mass etc • stress levels However, just because one human’s weight goes down and one human’s weight goes up, doesn’t mean either one is better or worse than the other. The goal of a reverse diet is NOT to see the scale drop. If it does, cool! But again, thats not the norm! The main goal of a reverse diet is to improve metabolic capacity and to allow the functioning of your body internally to become MUCH more optimal. A reverse diet allows you to level up your OVERALL health. So if in this process your body gains a little or loses a little, that’s okay!! Let your body do what it must to become it’s healthiest self from the inside, out. Hey my lovely ladies! I am missing you all like crazy! So it’s looking more and more like I will be able to reopen from 4th July! 🥳 This is a Saturday so I will be booking appointments for both the Saturday and the Sunday and the week after so I can get as many of you in while spacing you out appropriately enough to not have cross over and to have time to sufficiently clean in between each client. For this reason, it is imperative both you and I stick to time slots given so please do not arrive early or late. I will also be providing masks for each client as a must and strict measures will be in place with regards to hand washing and general health and safety. I will send you a full list before arrival. With this in mind I will also not be charging for any cancellations due to illness, if you or anyone you have been in contact with has any symptoms of COVID-19 please advise me of this ASAP and I am happy to reschedule at no extra cost.
