I am a Londoner with an Israeli part of me that is lucky enough to claim an authentic connection to a unique Yemenite community, their foods and their special Henna wedding celebration, the traditional dress, music and customs which I so enjoyed as a kid. Its called Constellation and I am blonde AND an Aquarian, so...theres THAT. Airplanes take us to dream destinations.. They also bring the people we love to us. They are majestic and powerful, but they are also beautiful at rest on a tarmac. No matter how many times I have flown, I am always filled with a sense of magic and wonder that such a thing is possible. I am thrown back to that scene in Mary Poppins, when laughter causes human liftoff. I love the beautiful curves of an airplane and the cross-like intersection of wings and body, brings imagery of angels in the clouds. The special backstory for this particular choice is that it, after Pearl Harbor, when the United States entered World War 11, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation assembly lines were taken over by the American government for the war effort. The Lockheed L-049 Constellation was requisitioned and designated as the C-69 and was to be used for equipment and personnel transport by the United States Army Air Forces. In 1944, Howard Hughes, who was one of the key people in the development of the Constellation, and owner of TWA Airlines, flew the aircraft from Burbank to Washington DC in less than 7 hours as a publicity stunt. The aircraft was painted in full TWA livery, still retaining its military serial number. His co-pilot was Jack Frey, President of TWA, and Hughes then-girlfriend, movie star Ava Gardner, was also along for the ride. Another C-69 arrived at Wright Field and picked up Orville Wright, who was allowed to control the aircraft momentarily, on what would be his last flight. A 3rd Constellation was sent on a Transatlantic flight from NYC to Paris in 1945. The flight took less than 15 hours and was flown by a TWA crew. Intriguingly magnificent. I found these pictures on my computer yesterday, @dieterunrath took them on the last day of our Full US tour with @cantswim_ just over a year ago. This day was just a couple weeks before we were going to Europe, another day in a 3 year block of time that felt like a nonstop whirlwind of constant touring and fast living since 2016. It’s jarring to see myself during this time and compare it to now where life feels like it’s come to halt. The longest I’ve been home for a long time, in the midst of incredibly trying circumstances. It creates a lot of complex feelings and I see a lot of my friends dealing with a similar thing. Hope everyone is staying safe and taking care of each other out there. Missing a lot of the faces I see at shows, looking forward to capturing more moments like the second picture in the hopefully not so distant future.
