On this day in history, Giles Corey was pressed to death after standing mute in the Court of Oyer and Terminer. With the knowledge that eleven innocent people had been executed thus far, and knowing those who had maintained their innocence before this court were convicted, Giles Corey maintained his innocence, and then boldly refused to answer the traditional question How will you be tried. For the court to proceed, Corey was expected to answer By God and my Country. His refusal to answer, known as standing mute, was infuriating to the court. Particularly as public acceptance of the witch trials had begun to seriously deteriorate by this time, a refusal such as this was a direct challenge to the courts authority. For three days, Giles Corey was kept in jail, and on each day he was given a chance to comply with the court. After three chances to reply, no progress had been made. The court decided to use an old legal procedure called peine forte et dure, French for hard and forceful punishment. As a result, as describe by historian Marilynne Roach in her excellent work The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege, on September 19, around noon, the elderly Giles Corey Was taken from Salem jail, and (by tradition) led across the street to an open pasture. While the public watched, officers placed Corey face up on the ground, set flat boards across his body, and piled heavy stones on these, one after another. Even under this terrible torture, Giles Corey never gave in and likely died on that same day from the severity of his wounds. The most commonly quoted final words of Giles Corey are “more weight.” While these might seem like the words of a stubborn old man defying authority, in reality this was a familiar phrase when peine forte et dure was used in England and Europe. It meant, “put me out of my misery now.” No contemporary records indicate Giles Corey said these final words, though it has remained a story in oral tradition over the centuries. - @salemwitchmuseum on Instagram
