Wow. Diet quality matters, it is disproportionately important for children and optimum nutrition looks nothing like a vegan diet. Heck, wheat did not make the cut!! Conclusion Diets high in seafood, rice, and red meat other than pork and low in refined grains, fried foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and wheat are leading healthy dietary factors for metabolic health in children. HDS is strongly predictive of CMR factors. Background Identifying leading dietary determinants for cardiometabolic risk (CMR) factors is urgent for prioritizing interventions in children. We aimed to identify leading dietary determinants for the change in CMR and create a healthy diet score (HDS) to predict CMR in children. Methods We included 5676 children aged 6–13 years in the final analysis with physical examinations, blood tests, and diets assessed at baseline and one year later. CMR score (CMRS) was computed by summing Z-scores of waist circumference, an average of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), fasting glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C, multiplying by − 1), and triglycerides. Machine learning was used to identify leading dietary determinants for CMR and an HDS was then computed. Results The nine leading predictors for CMRS were refined grains, seafood, fried foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, wheat, red meat other than pork, rice, fungi and algae, and roots and tubers with the contribution ranging from 3.9 to 19.6% of the total variance. Diets high in seafood, rice, and red meat other than pork but low in other six food groups were associated with a favorable change in CMRS. The HDS was computed based on these nine dietary factors. Children with HDS ≥8 had a higher decrease in CMRS (β (95% CI): − 1.02 (− 1.31, − 0.73)), BMI (− 0.08 (− 0.16, − 0.00)), SBP (− 0.46 (− 0.58, − 0.34)), DBP (− 0.46 (− 0.58, − 0.34)), mean arterial pressure (− 0.50 (− 0.62, − 0.38)), fasting glucose (− 0.22 (− 0.32, − 0.11)), insulin (− 0.52 (− 0.71, − 0.32)), and HOMA-IR (− 0.55 (− 0.73, − 0.36)) compared to those with HDS ≦3. The study, sponsored by the non-profit Multidisciplinary Associations for Psychedelic Studies (#MAPS), finished its groundbreaking research earlier this year after it was approved by the #FDA all the way back in 2011. Dr. Sisley overcame multiple obstacles to complete the study, including being fired from her job at the University of Arizona. - “We are immensely grateful to all of the study’s supporters,” Dr. Sisley wrote in a press release announcing the study’s completion, “especially the veteran service organizations who helped us with patient recruitment. We are proud to have persevered through these regulatory hurdles independently of hospitals, universities, or the VA system.” - Dr. Sisley’s study represents an outlier for cannabis research, in part because it happened, and in part, because it was geared towards veterans using cannabis as a treatment—not as a disorder. - Last year, Rolling Stone laid out how absurdly difficult it is to do any research with cannabis, in spite of the DEA claiming they were “streamlining” the research application process. Its with a heavy heart that we share some bad news: On Monday, September 14th, the Ninth Circuit appeals court overturned protections for nearly half a million TPS holders after making a final verdict on the Ramos v. Nielsen lawsuit, combined with the Bhattarai lawsuit, the two lawsuits which resulted in an injunction protecting TPS families from six countries (El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan). Despite overwhelming evidence that Trump’s TPS terminations were motivated by racism, this action will move forward and it now clears the way for the Trump Administration to de-document and tear apart 400,000 families. In as little as six months, TPS holders would lose their lawful status, and their U.S. citizen children could be forced to make an impossible choice between their families and their homes. The Citgo Banner drop resulted in dozens of articles and features from NPR to San Francisco Chronicle. Senate Bill 1175, introduced by Sen. Henry Stern (D-Calabasas), has failed! The bill was facing a midnight deadline yesterday after it was passed by the California Assembly, and only needed a concurrence vote in the California Senate before the clock struck 12. The Sportsmen’s Alliance, along with a large coalition of California, national and international groups, had been fighting the bill since its introduction in February. African government officials also weighed in on the legislation, which would have been devastating to their countries. “SB 1175 quickly advanced through the legislative process despite the strong opposition of the coalition and the African countries that would have suffered greatly as a result of the import prohibition,” said Jacob Hupp, associate director of state services at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Senator Stern and the state of California continue to do everything they can to undermine international wildlife conservation efforts in Africa and to ignore the very people that will be directly affected by these short-sighted bills. But, thankfully, the most recent effort to pass this legislation ran out of time.”  The horrendous bill would have banned the possession or importation of animal products from a number of African big-game species, and was amended in May to prohibit live-animal markets similar to those in China thought to be responsible for the outbreak of COVID-19. The harsh economic implications also prompted a coalition of African government officials to repeatedly voice their concerns and weigh in throughout the legislative process. Letters were submitted by officials from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Namibia. The Director General of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife also expressed concern and opposition to the legislation. Additionally, Senate republicans prolonged yesterday’s final Senate session of the year to ultimately run the clock out on SB 1175.
