Been late to update (been waiting till the right time to protect our brave allies). This is from 4th of July (but in the works since even earlier—back in March)! a couple months ago, our networks of nurses and doctors were being walked out in handcuffs for passing out PPE so we had to start an underground bottom-top network (the real roots of PPEforHCP) of free donations that even included the US Veterans Affairs. A few of us on OSCMS spun off a Signals group to design (medical) protective equipment for peaceful protesters (inspired by Hong Kong) as soon as June 1; this was to keep our community healthy/reduce hospital resource impacting (on the bigger scope/support freedom, liberty, and justice). We couldn’t do it without your support, the support of a few brave individuals going against the grain (sacrificing the REAL threat of getting fired for not “staying in their lane” or often worse) in US Customs, UPS, SJPD, hospitals, FEMA, fire department, Hong Kong/mainlanders, etc. Advocates for health and good doctors/nurses and frontlines come from all sides. PIG TRIAL 3 ✊🏽 The @bcspca not only failed to fight for the animal victims at Excelsior Hog Farm, but they also took it upon themselves to report the whistleblower to the police, despite the whistleblower providing clear evidence of multiple instances of criminal animal cruelty. Several instances of criminal animal cruelty have been documented at Excelsior Hog Farm (Abbotsford, BC) in the past year including workers repeatedly kicking pigs, electric prodding in the faces of pigs, tail-docking, and castrating piglets without pain relief... and much more. Despite the overwhelming evidence, ZERO charges have been recommended against Excelsior Hog Farm. Instead, animal activists @amysoranno, @ethically_fit , @roysasano, and @geoffregier are facing 21 counts of indictable offences (highest level in Canadian courts) for exposing this criminal animal cruelty to the public. . . Today we held 2 protests (following government health guidelines): One protest at the Abbotsford Court House to support the activists being charged on their first court date, and another protest at the BC SPCA Abbotsford headquarters to protest their complete inaction on this case (recommending zero charges against Excelsior and handing over the whistleblower to the police). . . If this whole situation sounds unjust to you, its because it truly is. In a society that prides themselves in being civilized and humane, this is a huge eye-opener to how blatantly ignorant our society is to the rights of non-human animals. It also exemplifies how even a “supposed” animal welfare organization is blinded by speciesism (the idea that some species are more important than others). Karachi Commissioner Sohail Rajput has directed administration officials to seal restaurants and marriage halls violating SOPs for at least three days in view of a spike in Covid-19 cases in the city. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 👉 @indiatimesinsta 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. . A private laboratory based in Keralas Valanchery has allegedly been conducting a large-scale fraud by issuing false COVID-19 negative certificates to people. According to the Times of India, Arma Laboratory, a franchise of a laboratory-based out of Kozhikode, has fraudulently amassed more than Rs 45 lakh through the scam. The Kerala Polices investigations so far have revealed that it collected swab samples from as many as 2,500 people, while only 496 of those samples were sent to the parent laboratory in Kozhikode. The rest of the people whose samples were not sent to the parent laboratory were instead issued fake COVID-19 negative certificates. The other violation by Arma lab was that it was not authorised to collect samples and send them to Kozhikode based lab for testing. The lab also destroyed samples for which the COVID-19 negative certificates were issued. We have seized the computers from Arma lab after receiving complaints about the issue of fake COVID-19 test certificates. We found that the data from the computers was deleted. We were able to retrieve the data with the help of cyber cell and came to know the lab collected 2,500 samples. When we checked with the Kozhikode based lab, they said the lab received only 496 samples. We also came to know that Arma lab officials issued fake COVID-19 negative certificates from untested samples, the report quoted MK Shaji, Inspector, Valanchery police station. This gains significance as Kerala has emerged as one of the worst affected states in the country. As per the state government’s dashboard, it has so far discovered a total of 1,87,276 positive cases, of which as many as 61,791 remain active cases. Medscape Clinical Trend: Pregnancy and COVID⠀ ⠀ A systematic review of 77 studies found that a significant number of pregnant or recently pregnant patients were diagnosed with COVID-19. ⠀ ⠀ The study, published in BMJ, also found an increased risk for preterm delivery as well as the need for invasive ventilation compared with nonpregnant women with COVID-19, especially those with an underlying medical condition.⠀ ⠀ Although the findings may help in establishing guidelines, some experts suggest caution in interpreting the results at this point, as many of the studies used in the review were published at the height of the pandemic and did not include routine COVID testing for all pregnant patients. ⠀ ⠀ A separate study examining the incidence of COVID-19 among maternity healthcare staff in London found that 1 in every 6 workers had SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, with one third showing no symptoms. ⠀ ⠀ Findings suggest that, compared with the general population of the United Kingdom, obstetric healthcare workers had twice the prevalence of seroconversion.⠀ ⠀ In the United States, disease severity in pregnancy has been a particular concern.
