THEY CALLED THEM LITTLE COBRAS When U.S. Marines stormed the shores of Guadalcanal in August 1942 in the first major U.S. Pacific offensive of the war, both Americans and Japanese threw whatever nearby air forces they could find into the mix. The result was an ad hoc unit called the Cactus Air Force, after the island’s code name. Its most lackluster member was the Bell P-39 Airacobra. ::: The P-39couldn’t attain the legendary status of those aircraft produced later in WW !!, but proved critical early in the war. ::: The airplanes were welcomed by the Soviet Union where the air war was fought mainly at low altitudes and short ranges, and when German aircraft flew low for close air support, the Little Cobras, as the Soviets called their P-39s, were there to strike. — This Friday, September 25, an aerial tribute commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II will take place over the National Mall and Potomac River. — To complement the aerial tribute, we’ve created a special webpage dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. This shot was taken while flying over The A Shau Valley Vietnam. We were. Flying to the MACV-SOG, Special Forces Camp to support A MACV-SOG Team going into Laos to check out the Ho Chi Minh Trail there. They were in a Chopper and landing at A known LZ (Landing Zone). Our plane would fly cover for them in case they ran into a group of NVA North Vietnamese Army. When they were secure we would fly back to A Shau Camp and then back to DaNang AB Vietnam. Thankfully my instructor was in the plane and we got down as safe as possible and I survived my first plane crash with essentially zero injuries. I get to work on a lot of unique projects, but this one definitely slots in pretty high on that list - a Titan T-51 Mustang 3/4 scale kit plane, with a Suzuki H27 2.7L V6 engine, running a MoTeC M600 ECU. The owner built it all himself, over the course of 10+ years. The assembly and attention to detail is amazing. I was contacted to help resolve an issue with the previous tuning that was done. It had been run (and tuned - supposedly) on an engine dyno, but on first take off it experienced detonation which took out a piston (and no doubt frayed a few nerves). The engine was rebuilt, and the owner then got with me to do the tuning on it. An engine dyno was no longer a convenient option, so I said let’s just tune it on the ground. As you can see in one of the pictures, the exhaust isn’t exactly good for fitting wide-band lambda sensors, so some quick test pipes were made to test different cylinders. The airport had a place to tie it to the ground so we could run the engine at full throttle, and I tuned the air/fuel (took 20%+ fuel to get it right from the calibration they had) and I adjusted ignition timing by monitoring engine rpm (worked good since the engine was fully loaded against the prop, behaving very similar to a dyno). Timing in my calibration was 10 deg less advanced then what they had, while still making the same engine speed. Their previous calibration also had an incorrectly setup MAP/BARO compensation, which would have further leaned the mixture out as it climbed. Photographed here at Flying Legends in 2019, sad to report that a month ago this beautiful aircraft had to make a forced landing on a routine flight from Duxford Aerodrome, crashing into a field and then hitting trees at some speed after suspected engine failure. Mercifully neither the pilot nor his passenger were badly injured, but the aircraft sustained considerable damage, the fuselage breaking in two just forward of the pilot’s seat. Whether she will ever fly again and live up to her ‘Invincible’ nickname is open to question – it’s always so tragic when these precious aircraft are lost. Let’s hope she can be restored and rebuilt. 🇬🇧 The first monoplane fighter and the first with a top speed of over 483 km/h (300 mph) to enter RAF service was the Hawker Hurricane joining the RAF in December 1937. The Hurricane Mk I with 768-kW (1,030-hp) Rolls-Royce Merlin II and an armament of eight 7.7-mm (0.303-in) machine-guns was Fighter Commands principal fighter in the Battle of Britain in 1940, and destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other defences combined.
