Early Life and Career Howard D. Schultz was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 19, 1953, and moved with his family to the Bayview Housing projects in Canarsie, a neighborhood in southeastern Brooklyn, when he was 3 years old. Schultz was a natural athlete, leading the basketball courts around his home and the football field at school. He made his escape from Canarsie with a football scholarship to Northern Michigan University in 1970. After graduating from the university with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication in 1975, Schultz found work as an appliance salesman for Hammarplast, a company that sold European coffee makers in the United States. Rising through the ranks to become director of sales, in the early 1980s, Schultz noticed that he was selling more coffee makers to a small operation in Seattle, Washington, known then as the Starbucks Coffee Tea and Spice Company, than to Macys. Every month, every quarter, these numbers were going up, even though Starbucks just had a few stores, Schultz later remembered. And I said, I gotta go up to Seattle. Howard Schultz still distinctly remembers the first time he walked into the original Starbucks in 1981. At that time, Starbucks had only been around for 10 years and didnt exist outside Seattle. The companys original owners, old college buddies Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker and their neighbor, Zev Siegl, had founded Starbucks in 1971. The three friends also came up with the coffee companys ubiquitous mermaid logo. When I walked in this store for the first time—I know this sounds really hokey—I knew I was home, Schultz later remembered. I cant explain it. But I knew I was in a special place, and the product kind of spoke to me. At that time, he added, I had never had a good cup of coffee. I met the founders of the company, and really heard for the first time the story of great coffee ... I just said, God, this is something Ive been looking for my whole professional life. What do you do with your past?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Great questions. Ever done something and afterwards wished you hadn’t? Or maybe it is something you knew needed to happen, but boy do you wish you had gone about it in a different way? I would have to answer yes to both of those questions. Back before I truly knew how to love myself (BElove) and understood that the only person I have control over is myself, I did a number of things I wish I would have done differently. In the past I have made decisions based on my fragile ego- trying to fill my love cup with peoples opinion of myself or the job I was doing. I based a lot of my self worth on those around me. My family, those I worked with, my kids, my partner, what someone thought of my acting, my preaching, my real estate or even how many likes I may get on a post… in Myspace ;) (and yes I still have a Myspace account… it is a bit like a time capsule and I am pretty sure I don’t know the password for it- who else has a Myspace still?) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So what do you do with those things? I love this quote by Jay-Z. You realize that sometimes there is not a lot you can do. You acknowledge it, make amends if you need to and learn from it. BElove to yourself enough to ask yourself the hard questions. Look deep into your actions, identify the motivation for making those choices and make the changes. It has been my experience that you can’t run from your past, you can’t bury it or ignore it- but you can face it, learn from it and use it as a stepping stone to a better you… or as Jay-Z says, “use it as a foundation to grow.” This is a process and mindset to a way of life that is continually trying to grow and BElove. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What have you learned and grown from? What do you need to grow from. In fact, I recently started working with a coach that helped me understand that the fear itself is the issue versus the actual reality. This fear strangles you with anxiety - sometimes to a point where you feel like you/your life is spiraling out of control. But guess what - it’s okay. ✈️There’s an incredible interview with @willsmith talking about going skydiving. The night prior and every moment leading up to the time you actually jump out of the airplane you are consumed with fear and anxiety. Yet, the minute you jump out, everything changes. Soon after, at the point of maximum danger is the point of minimum fear. Rather, it’s pure bliss and beautiful. 🙏🏼God places the best things in life on the other side if maximum fear. You may feel crippled with fear and anxiety right now, but I promise you this - it’ll be okay. Whatever is meant to happen will happen and know that some of the best things in life lie ahead no matter how dark your path may look. Here’s a fun project that never really made it too far from my desk. While doing a bit of housekeeping on a shared drive we have in our office, I rediscovered these images I put together a few summers ago and thought I’d share them now for your enjoyment. Over the past few years of provincial touring, I would often send a followup email to our regional audiences to thank them for joining us and solicit any feedback they might want to share on their experience. Did they like the show? Were tickets easy to access? How was the theatre space? What types of theatre do you enjoy the most? That kind of stuff. I love learning about the audience experience. Whether we’re talking music, or dance, or theatre and any other live performance, I’ve always been fascinated by the different interpretations people can take away from the experience. What I enjoyed about a show may have nothing to do with what you enjoyed about it. I could love a show and you could hate it. That’s the beauty of art. Over the years we received a wide range of feedback. Some of it was very complimentary and some of it was angry to the point of comical. So I took some of the “hot takes” from both sides and paired them up. My idea was to create a series of postcards outlining an upcoming season and mail them out to subscribers, past ticket buyers, friends and supporters. My thought was, if I could convey the diverse range of audience experiences in a somewhat comical way, these cards (and our season info) might live on on someone’s fridge door or at the very least, spark a few conversations. But....this project was eventually moved to the “I’ll do this later” folder and then forgotten. love by definition is “an intense feeling of deep affection”, yet it is experienced differently for everyone. when you’re 16, love is about holding hands. when you’re 22, love is about compatibility. and when you’re 26, love is about thinking about marriage. but how do you know you’re in love with someone? for me, it’s when i go out shopping and i see a pair of pretty earrings in some shop. and that’s when i think of her – how the earrings would look on her as they’d dangle when she’d laugh. if i’d think of her at that moment, i’d know i’m in love with her. people write so much about love, but the ugliest bit about love, the important bit nobody ever writes about is that it’s messy. it’s sometimes the hardest thing in the world. when it comes, it’s like spring – warm and long. when it leaves, it’s like autumn – quickly and abruptly, leaving you cold like winter. and the loveliest thing about love is that it’s peaceful. love is the easiest feeling to express. no matter how hard you try to hide it, it’ll show – in your eyes, your words, your expressions, or your silence. when you love someone, your burdens are shared. you take their burdens and give them yours. it’s a welcoming change. and it forces you to be better than yesterday. but you’re loving someone wrong if you have more sad days than happier ones, if you’re self-doubting yourself around them all the time, if you feel you’re the only one giving everything getting nothing in return. if you feel that way, walk away. love may not be a choice, but lovers are. ___ scene by @omair.tarique for The Scribbled Stories - @thescribbledstories on Instagram
