FACE member David Kappo speaks this week in Grazia about Race in Higher Education. Fashion has had a long-standing problem with race, but this is especially so with its fashion schools, where diversity is sorely lacking. Im the only permanently contracted Black member of staff at both Central Saint Martins and The Royal College of Art, says David Kappo, a founding member of the new collective of fashion academics and their allies, called FACE (Fashion Academics Creating Equality.) With my students, visibility is important. Its important that they see staff who look like them. Now is the time to have those uncomfortable discussions to make that happen. Kappo is a part of a network of influential tutors, including Zowie Broach, head of fashion at the Royal College of Arts, Judith Watt, pathway leader of CSMs fashion journalism BA, and Berni Yates, an educator at CSM, who have all been waving the flag for racial and economic inclusivity for years. Its not a fad or a trend, says Yates. Its about talent. Ive worked with so many talented students throughout my 30-year career; only now do people seem to care about elevating the voices of Black and non-white students. The entire system is long overdue a reformation. Watt agrees: To build foundations for a fairer and kinder future, there needs to be far stronger dialogue between young people and the older generation. We need dialogue, and trust. They have worked collectively to create a safe space for students who might otherwise have felt alienated. The one thing I would say of everyone in this group is that they realise its not about us. For the ultimate funky disco event we created our own “GFUNK” television network filming our own episode of Soultrain! We transformed every aspect of the venu into interactive areas so everyone was in on the fun. For the dance area we brought in custom programmed LED dance floors and synced them to our sound. We built custom staging with custom lighting installations synced to the DJs. We added Vintage TV walls playing funny and strange Tv ads from the 70s, wardrobe stations and tv staged filming sets so you really get like you were on a live network broadcast. • Love • All these years, there have been many thoughts, perceptions and discussions about love. From my experience of all the discussions I’ve had, I can divide the opinions about falling in love into two basic schools of thought, which are quite opposite of each other. The first group of people are those of the opinion that love is not something that is worthy of experience because it only brings pain. An emotion that only causes confusion, hurt and anger. The other group is the one that says love is a beautiful emotion to feel. It makes everything better, brings colour to life. It’s a blessing that brings happiness and smiles. I find the two songs, ‘Kay Sera Sera’ from Pukar and ‘Jaane Kyun Log’ from Dil Chahta Hai to be the perfect portrayal of this popular debate between the two groups where two characters from both the songs are throwing light on the pros of falling in love (Anjali & Shalini) and the other two listing its cons (Prabhu Deva and Akash). The reason these songs are similar and relatable is because both the songs bring out the fear most people have about love and the hope that manages to live in their heart despite the fear. At some point the debate that is visible on the screen between two characters beautifully transforms into an internal debate that perhaps your doubtful side must have had with your hopeful side when you were hesitating falling in love with someone. Where towards the end of one song, the message that remains with the audience is that whatever will be, will be! (Kay Sera Sera!), it is left with the feeling that a person should never stop himself from feeling love freely when it comes his way, towards the end of another song. Perhaps this is what our generation is yet to learn. Perhaps the absence of faith in love is what has made people so skeptical about feeling something so beautiful without fears. Nobody can know the mystery that love is without stepping in it. But after being a party to all these debates, one thing that I’ve come to understand is—love is the question and love itself the answer. The „ Spiegel Lamp“ featured here in the entrance hall at the Spiegel Publishing House in Hamburg in 1969. The designing of Spiegel Publishing Headquarters in Hamburg is one of Verner’s most important interior projects. For the renowned news magazine, which moved into its new modernistic building in 1969 located on the Ost-West Strasse in Hamburg, Panton designed the entrance area with courtyard and foyer, the lobby, the dining hall including a bar, the swimming pool in the building’s basement for employees, the room for editorial staff conferences plus a lobby-like waiting area, as well as the colour concept for the hallways of the administrative and editorial office building. One of the most important design elements here was again the colour scheme, which contributed significantly to Pantons typical fusion of spatial dimensions. Apart from the furniture, he used his own designs (lamps, textiles, wall coverings) for the furnishing of the rooms. Of particular importance here is the “Spiegel lamp” specially developed for this commission, which was used to clad walls and ceilings. In 2011 the publishing house moved to a new building in Hamburg’s Hafencity, the snack bar was installed in the new building. It is illuminated at night and is visible from the outside through the glass façade. The dining hall, which has been listed as historically significant since the end of 1998, was donated to the city of Hamburg and moved to the @mkg.hamburg .
