On sol 5352 (12-Feb-2019), NASAs Opportunity Rover was retired from service after not sending any receivable transmissions since sol 5111 (10-Jun-18). It landed at Meridiani Planum on 25-Jan-2004 and explored 28.06mi/45.16km during its 14 year, 46 day (Earth time) service period- ~55x its designed 90-sol lifetime. Follow @milkyway_scispace. . ⠀⠀ In this rare image taken on July 19, 2013, the wide-angle camera on NASAs Cassini spacecraft has captured Saturns rings and our planet Earth and its moon in the same frame. It is only one footprint in a mosaic of 33 footprints covering the entire Saturn ring system (including Saturn itself). At each footprint, images were taken in different spectral filters for a total of 323 images: some were taken for scientific purposes and some to produce a natural color mosaic. This is the only wide-angle footprint that has the Earth-moon system in it.⠀ . ⠀⠀ The dark side of Saturn, its bright limb, the main rings, the F ring, and the G and E rings are clearly seen; the limb of Saturn and the F ring are overexposed. The breaks in the brightness of Saturns limb are due to the shadows of the rings on the globe of Saturn, preventing sunlight from shining through the atmosphere in those regions. The E and G rings have been brightened for better visibility.⠀ . ⠀⠀ Earth, which is 898 million miles (1.44 billion kilometers) away in this image, appears as a blue dot at center right; the moon can be seen as a fainter protrusion off its right side. An arrow indicates their location in the annotated version. (The two are clearly seen as separate objects in the accompanying composite image PIA14949.) The other bright dots nearby are stars.⠀ . ⠀⠀ This is only the third time ever that Earth has been imaged from the outer solar system. The acquisition of this image, along with the accompanying composite narrow- and wide-angle image of Earth and the moon and the full mosaic from which both are taken, marked the first time that inhabitants of Earth knew in advance that their planet was being imaged. The rockets flight path is relevant to lunar landings, providing a unique opportunity to mature sensors and algorithms for potential use on Artemis missions. NASA Langleys navigation Doppler lidar technology will be the second sensor system to fire up during the flight test. The new sensor uses a laser to enable precise soft landings on the Moon and Mars. Navigation Doppler lidar sends laser beams to the surface and detects the reflected returns to determine the lander’s velocity and altitude. When the UK and European travel bans were put into effect in early March due to Covid 19, We lost about 75% of our jobs, and were convinced that work and life as we knew it would come to a stand still. I have never, not once in my life, had a phobia. Until now. And I’m gonna be honest, I never understood them, I always thought “get over it, it’s just a spider, etc. walk away.” Until l, of course myself, became severely claustrophobic. To the point my entire body broke out in sweat and I was drenched within 30 seconds and my face looked like a very ripe tomato...and I almost passed out while trying on my finished spacesuit and helmet for the first time. It is not just mental, it is very physical. BUT, our mental minds do control a lot, if not everything. After six months, I was not able to overcome my claustrophobia, but I was able to come to a type of meeting of the minds with it. When we calm our minds and sit with the fear, NOT try and push it away, we can sit with it in a different way, that makes it “doable”. Playing an astronaut in AWAY made me push into the sharp edges in a way I never thought it would. This was such an important lesson for me...in so many ways. I hope that in sharing this you might feel less alone in whatever it is that takes over your mind and therefore body. Landing on Mars and then attempting to leave the surface again for the trip back to Earth consumed enormous amounts of fuel & water. This space station would provide a stopping point for Earth transports, subsequent travel would then be provided by the stations shuttles and capsules. 🚀 This station is capable of sustaining a crew of up to 120, providing for all their needs for prolonged periods. Housed within it various sections, the station stored and processed a variety of necessities 🌬️ Atmospheric gases 💧 Water storage & reclamation 🔁 CO2 🌊 Hydroponics 🛢️ Fuel for transports 🍇 Food 🛠️ Equipment stores There are 64 modules to provide for the crew quarters and secondary laboratories. 🔬 It also features a significant amount of protection from radiation and micro-meteorites. ☢️ A single, injectable micro fission reactor provided up to 110 MW of power to the station. ☣️ A secondary power source, provided by solar arrays around the top of the station. 🌞 In the event the reactor had to be ejected due to a meltdown, the arrays could provide enough operational power for the station until the replacement fission reactor could be delivered from Earth and installed.
