The issue with “guilt-free” foods (or most other foods with a health halo) ISNT the food itself. It’s about how those labels influence our: relationship with food, food/health behaviors, & ability to eat and live in a healthy, positive way. — 1st: “guilt” is not an ingredient™ All foods are “100% guilt-free” (which is why we literally made sweatshirts that say 100% guilt-free! DM if you’d like to order one). So this label on food is completely inaccurate & misleading. - 2nd: when we put this label onto food it influences the way we eat the labeled food & other foods. If we believe one food is “guilt-free” that implies there’s a version of that food that is guilty. This doubt can start to push us into using black & white labels around food, feeling guilt for eating certain foods, & start to evaluate food choices as something to feel a negative associate or stress towards. “Will this food make me guilty?” “Am I bad for eating this food?” - 3rd: if we’re listening to these labels of “guilty” “not guilty” etc it becomes much harder to listen to or notice: how your body is feeling, what foods you like, how food makes you feel, what you’re in the mood for, your hunger, satisfaction, fullness, relationship with food & other individual signals & responses of your body throughout the day & your meal. It creates distrust & the feeling like this label or food product knows more about your body than you do. (Spoiler: it doesn’t!) - 4th: these labels weren’t created to help you to make healthy choices, feel good about your body or nutrition... they exist to make you buy products. The problem is that these messages last longer than the time it takes you to walk from the grocery aisle to checkout - they’re influencing your understanding of nutrition, of the way food works in your body (aka a “guilt-free” label changes nothing about your body’s ability to digest food!), increasing negative or disordered eating patterns by creating fear around food AND leaving you feeling like you should trust a food marketing over your own body. — Full article why on thewellful.com ✨ I’m accepting a few nevirtual clients next month!
