All the rose 🌹bushes have been removed from the area adjacent to the strainer posts (they provide no intrinsic value apart from looking nice) and the team have opted instead to showcase our unique Australian flora! Montpelier Plantation history dates back to 1687 when Sir Hans Sloane, Secretary of the Royal Society of England and a doctor, visited Nevis and discovered this location. Montpelier Plantation witnessed the marriage of Horatio Nelson, famous for his service in the Royal Navy, to Frances “Fanny” Nisbet, niece of the president of Nevis, John Herbert. The history of Montpelier has contributed to the rapid growth of Nevis since the beginning of the 19th century. It was one of the richest places on earth, largely due to its hugely profitable plantations. When Nevis lost the sugar monopoly, everything changed and Nevis slumbered for the next 100 years. In 1960 James Milnes-Gaskell purchased this estate with the dream of converting this historic ruin into a hotel. Driving back from an inspiring appointment at Dm Auguste Clape in Cornas in 2012, Jessica asked me what I thought of the name August if we ever had a baby boy. In January 2013 we started with 50 special pre-clonal Syrah cuttings that we own-rooted and began to propagate. On March 27, 2017 - August James was born and later that year, Padrino Ruben combed through the block that now contained 12,000 vines. Ruben found just 400 pounds of tiny clusters in 2017 - enough for 30 3-liter bottles for Auggie to drink - his birth year vintage from the birth year of his namesake vineyard - for the rest of his life. In 2018 those 12,000 vines created 80 cases of wine = our first release of the Great Places Syrah bottlings that are all pre-clonal, own-rooted, head-pruned, 6,000 vine/acre, 2.5 bunches/vine. The clusters are the smallest in the vineyard and the subsequent wine is silky yet rich, deep but brimming with energy. Yesterday we had a special visit with the illustrious wine writer & historian, John Winthrop Haeger. Our tour started at the estate vineyard & farm to take a peak at the Riesling block. We then tasted through a vertical of Pinot Noirs from the Savoy Vineyard. John is in the process of taking a closer look at some of the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards on the west coast. Radio-Coteau has been working with Savoy consistently for the past nineteen vintages. We tasted 2002, 2004, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2017.
