Black property ownership in this country has been marred by decades of discriminatory practices designed to prevent financial independence and the accumulation of generational wealth, subjugating black families to second-class citizenry. Just this week, the Washington Post reported that DC has experienced the “greatest intensity of gentrification” out of any city in the entire country. Black families have borne the brunt of that burden, with over 30,000 displaced by affluent white transplants in the past 13 years. It’s this reality that makes my own families’ story so poignant and this day so significant. My grandparents moved to DC during the Great Migration on the promise of a better life. But DC was far from the Promised Land; subject to the whims of unscrupulous landlords and dismal housing conditions they moved from place to place seeking a home in which they could live with dignity and on their own terms. When my grandfather passed, my grandma had to raise 11 children on her own. As a disabled domestic with little education, her earning power was limited but being unable to provide for her family was not an option. So to keep a roof over their heads, she fell victim to predatory loan practices that eventually forced my family from their home and out of the city. And while I’ll never be able to buy my grandma a home, I know she’s smiling looking down on me now because today officially marks our families’ return to DC. Today makes a year since I styled this look for the @nycballet fall gala. It was my first step into this journey into styling and designing. This was actually my first time actually trusting myself and my ancestors to guide me. Once youve put boundaries in place in a relationship, how do you enforce them? If this is a new process for you its good to expect pushback, because what youre really saying is the way weve done our relationship in the past? Is no longer acceptable to me. Example: if you always took the highway home everyday and you decide that you are no longer taking the highway but youre going to take local roads--theres going to be the habit that wants to keep getting on the highway ramp. It takes practice to divert your conversation and the way you do things. So for enforcement with new boundaries? It helps to be mentally prepared for pushback. ALSO by wanting change and setting boundaries, it does not mean you are mean, selfish, dismissive, not a good listener too sensitive -- none of those things are true, THOUGH you may feel this if youve established a new boundary and someone has pushed back against it. I needed this.... A break, a different environment, a new space, sister love time, a fresh perspective, uninterrupted creative time, unrestricted day dreaming, a community to remind me that any and everything is possible, love, encouragement and affirmation....and of course all while enjoying good food. I get asked all the time, as a doctor, how do I manage burnout? My strategy is to prevent it. Planing breaks and getaways with people who fill me up, and being unapologetic about taking time away from the office are key for me. I remember during my first year of work after residency, I felt guilty every time I asked for a day off, even when it was for CME (educational events required for my licensure). But what I realized is that what my job and patients need from me is a present, well rested, sharp minded, and kind physician. So I do what I need to do in order show up that way, even when that means being away. I think this principle applies to all areas of life...things that are important to us (jobs, careers, relationships) sometimes require a break in order to come back fully into them. Side note, y’all know how my husband is always making fun of my PJs? He got tired of seeing my pink fuzzy robe, so bought me a new one, and as he handed the new one to me, he took my pink fuzzy one out of my hand and put it in the dumpster. Lol. So I upgraded, for him and for me, into the BEST PJ’s I’ve ever slept in by @cozyearthclothing . They’re made of bamboo and spandex and feel like a warm hug. I had to share them with my girls this weekend so got them each a pair. They all said they were the nicest PJs they’ve ever worn. Being a black woman in my corner of music & its business. !!! @riddim_mag asked me to pen down some thoughts on the #blacklivesmatter in context to my experiences . Find it in this september edition (in German). Below is my original english version. 📸 credits: Klas Dahlberg (Lira Magazine) & @niculai_constantinescu . This absolutely re- awoke the lifelong pain amongst me and many of the black brothers and sisters. It’s in our faces in one way or the other every day. A suspicious eye. So we tune into survival mode, and smile. It’s not an easy nor light topic for me personally to talk about because of its multilayered nature. I am a woman in the industry, a black woman in the music industry at that, when you zoom closer. We can even go deeper zooming in, but i hope you get the point, cos It’s exhausting for us black and brown people to always be on the defence all the time. We have a rich, powerful, musical and cultural heritage and pride that I calmly and deeply believe in and honour from the core of my heart, offstage and onstage. This will never change. I am extremely black and very proud of that fact. Some of us have the privilege, luxury and choice to not allow the anger and pain that arises from these enormous racial injustices and profiling that dictate our lives. We have been blessed with a stage and platform to express ourselves, so by honouring that space in music and keep creating as a black woman, this on it’s own is an active statement and a silent (or loud) protest at that. Racism in the music industry is a tough one for me to come to terms with and figure out, and I am still figuring out how to deal with it, because it’s mostly the subtle and hard to put your finger on type of racism, very fine tuned and outwardly the innocent kind. The kind that lands in the grey zone. You feel it, and it leaves a wound. So i think white people, upper and middle class people, in fact all of us, need to be very mindful about how we see, speak and approach people of black and indegenous cultures. If you are pregnant and planning a vacation, here’s some info on safe travel during pregnancy. • Although the most optimal time for travel during pregnancy is 14-28 weeks, it is generally safe to travel until 36 weeks. • 💊Be sure to pack all medications that you may need, including prescription medications and prenatal vitamins, as well as over the counter medicines and a first aid kit. (Don’t forget to pack a mask 😷) • 🦟 Avoid travel to areas with Zika outbreaks, as Zika virus has been linked to serious birth defects. This virus is spread by mosquitoes, so if travel to a Zika area is unavoidable, be sure to pack insect repellant with DEET. The @cdcgov has a current list of Zika outbreak areas. • 🚗🚘 If traveling by car, be sure to wear your seat belt every time you are in the car. The belt should be low on the hip bones, below your belly, with the shoulder belt to the side of your belly and between your breasts. This is how Im feeling right now after taking the ENTIRE MONTH OF JULY OFF! I feel so refreshed, so renewed and so ready to get back to work! I cant say that I really went on vacation, because RONA 🙄. But I did spend the month playing, purging and piddling around the house.☺️ I used to think that taking a month off ended once I finished school. That being an adult meant working non-stop until retirement with an occasional 3-4 weeks off a year at best. If Im being totally honest, I was never really a fan of having to ration out my vacations days. Then I realized that I could DESIGN and CURATE that exact life that I wanted. For me, taking a month off in the middle of the year, is part of that design. (I also dont work Friday through Sunday). But lets be clear, I didnt get here over night. I decided to take the leap of leaving my corporate engineering career behind, following my passion for food, and investing lots of time, money and energy into learning how to build a business around my life, and now Im here. And in this phase of my life, Im so blessed that I get to teach others how to do the same. I love when my clients tell me about their staycations at the Ritz Carlton or how there are certain days of the week that are off limits to everyone else and are reserved just for them. Its not a secret, its a system. And thats what I teach. THIS IS 30 🤎 So many moments in my life where I wondered what kind of person I would be at this age. And I must admit, the woman I am today is far from anything I ever imagined. I could go on and on about life’s journey and all that I have done but honestly, I’m just taking in this moment. Taking in all the love I’m receiving on this day, and enjoying the sense of peace I feel internally. Every year you’re asked “how does it feel to be a year older” and usually we say “feels the same”. But that’s not my answer this year. My answer is everything feels different, everything feels more calm, every moment today has felt warm, my heart feels bigger, my mental feels clearer, and I truly feel I have reached that moment of wholeness within. This may be a little controversial, but stay with me...When we try to create a certain mood or aesthetic for our feeds, it limits us. It can limit us from wearing certain colors, posting certain pictures, and most of all, it limits our ability to be a true creative. Hear me...I’m NOT saying that you can not be a creative with a certain theme, style or aesthetic. You definitely can!! I am saying that it limits you from exploring different things. Creativity is multifaceted. It spans light years and light years away of infinite and dynamic energy and power. That can’t be contained to 1 aesthetic. As pretty and well curated as these feeds or content can be, it isn’t truly realistic for one who loves to be expressive. It’s one sided, and if you’re one sided, how are you truly digging deep and creating? As much as I may try to stick to a certain style or theme, it doesn’t work. You’ll see that I do have a core style. I mostly like to dress up. I like elegant, romantic pieces that flow and pieces that are saturated in color. Bold, big, statement worthy...but from one picture to the next, it may lend to a different vibe. A different theme. A different aesthetic or feel. That’s because that day, I expressed how I felt. How I felt translated as the end result. As much as I love color, an all neutral look is just as inviting to me. So if you’re struggling finding or creating a “perfect” or well curated feed, just stick to who you are. You can create a rhythm or rhyme to keep things balanced. Your feed doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s. That’s the point of it all. We get to express ourselves however we want within our little slice of the Internet. Own your space! Focus on creating feel good photos. Whatever feels good to you, will look amazing because one, you feel good and two it’ll translate that way to your tribe who’s truly down. On March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers. The officers were searching for two people who were already in custody. Neither person lived there. Three officers --Sergeant Jonathan Mattingly, Detective Brett Hankison and Detective Myles Cosgrove -- forced entry without knocking or announcing they were officers. They used a battering ram to knock down her door and then fired more than 22 times. Breonna was hit with eight of those bullets. Breonna was killed. None of the officers have been fired, arrested or charged. They were able to enter her apartment with a No-Knock Warrant. We are all learning daily. I have to say, cutting off my hair during quarantine has taught me more about self-worth, my blackness and the art of just not caring! I used to think braids were for ‘casual’ or ‘dressed down’ looks and would never dream of attending anywhere nice in a ‘fro, yet here I am. Maybe it was a form of denial, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was my own self-confidence, we’ll never know. But I’m definitely more confident in my own skin now. I am announcing today my candidacy for Hobsons Bay Local Council. I arrived in Australia from Malawi in late 2010 as a child refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. For a decade, Hobsons Bay has been my home and has allowed me to mature into the man that I am today. I spent five years of my childhood living in a refugee camp, not knowing when or where my next meal would come. Hobsons Bay took me in and raised me and I will forever be grateful to this community and I am so incredibly proud and fortunate to be part of it. I am running for the upcoming Hobsons Bay City Council election to represent the Cherry Lake Ward. I am passionate about our Hobsons Bay community and I want to serve you. With your vote you can make history by electing your youngest and first Councillor born on the African continent. I have spent a large part of 2020 ensuring that our community is staying connected during this pandemic. As a black cosplayer there are often times when i feel like i have to try twice as hard to get half the response to my cosplays as a non black cosplayer. Sure we can say all day likes and followers dont matter but honestly, its hard not to feel some type of way when those sage words of wisdom come from big name cosplayers bearing 20k+ followers. Yes cosplaying is for fun and should be for you, but no one, noo one likes to work hard on something only for it to go unseen and I honestly feel like that happens a hell of a lot for black creatord. We can make a magnificent cosplay, style it to the umpteenth power, have a boss wig and accessories, post the cosplay and it goes by unnoticed. People always say cosplay is for everyone, then why dont black cosplayers get the same following and uplift from the cosplay community as others? Why do black cosplayers only get noticed when something racial happens, or someone bullies them, or when non black cosplayers share their post along with those # blacklivesmatter black squares, and then unfollow them after? Black cosplayers work so hard to be seen, heard, praised. We are so critical of our work because we know that all it takes is one small slip up for the hounds to come in and tear our looks apart. Its hard for things to stay fun when you know theres a 80% chance your comments are going to be full of hate and ignorance just for your skin color. So if you ever see me being overly critical about a costume piece, a photo etc just know its because in my head im trying to make sure i cover every possible way someone could critique me for not being polished enough or canon enough. If they cant attack my costume, my makeup or my wig, the only thing they can critique is my skin color, and thats when i know theyre reaching hard and failing to find a weakness. ACCOMPLISHED 🎓 I don’t often congratulate, and definitely don’t post when things go right in my life but I’m overwhelmingly happy for being part of the 2020 Graduating Class!!! It’s bittersweet reflecting on how incredible the past few years have been, and then to have it end unceremoniously. However it does not diminish all the beautiful growth I’ve made during this entire process. I’m so thankful I’ve met the numerous people along that way that continue to inspire me. More specifically the 12 most loving and talented individuals I’ve been blessed to spend EVERY SINGLE DAY with for the past 4 years with as we embarked on this journey together. Sally, Jordan, Jake, Ansley, Josh, Isabella, Carter, Will, Melody, Sam, Tiffany, and Caitlin y’all truly are the light of my life and I’m so glad I got to work and train with you but more importantly it means everything that we’ve formed a family that I’ll always love with my whole heart. I remember during the process of “Milk Like Sugar” meeting so many aspiring young black actors, directors, lighting designers, dancers, and just overall incredible theatre artist that felt overlooked and unheard and I’m here to tell you please, please, please don’t stop!
