Here is a bird, part of a series that I’d been posting over a period of time, undetermined at this point but I am determined to post it, and with said determination I will determine when I post the final image, upon final determination of the termination of the series it will be determined that it will indeed be terminated. With extreme prejudice I might add. So out of this series what we did determine is the following. I know a lot of stupid people, I’m sorry if you thought she was afraid of me, you can’t help that you might be a dope. I could maybe help you but I’m determined not to. The bird was interested in chasing a rival, if you thought she was fine but was either hunting or territorial I’m going to allow it. Welcome to the top 10%. Of what I don’t know but people love being in that space, you feel good now don’t you. If you get a sticker that says “I’m in the top 10%” I’ll validate it. Likely the majority of you took a look at the pretty bird, said aww pretty bird and clicked a button and moved along. Maybe you came and read my nonsense and didn’t follow and moved on. Either way you moved on, you learned nothing from my post. That’s the reality of social media. If you come to learn from some slack jawed gawker about a subject, just because it’s written on social media doesn’t make it of any value. I could write that this bird was flying off to pick up a calf, and I bet a day later I’d never hear about it again or some blogger would have reposted it as gospel. Please don’t get your facts from social media, if you live in the states you saw how that worked out now didn’t ya. Actually if you live anywhere you saw how that worked out didn’t ya. The Splendid Snowy Owl: White Masters of the Tundra The Snowy Owl is alluring and mysterious. We don’t know much about the bird, and often what we thought we knew has been proven wrong. In my opinion, members of the avian class display a certain degree of majesty, but the snowy owl ranks as the most splendid of them all. Being the pet choice for Harry Potter is indicative of its magic. Experiencing harsh and cold temperatures, we evaded the extreme Snow Storm in Toronto last week by a couple of hours and drove for about an hour to the Snowy Owl spot. Wow this bird, what can I say about this bird? Watch me say words…I have the best words. When I study a bird, I study the patterns they follow, times of day they tend to be active and where they like to hang out. Then I try to put myself in those spaces respectfully. See I like my birds, they don’t care about me but I really like them around. Not in my best interest to worry them. So I was in the general area she likes and I plunked down behind a snowbank for even more cover. She flew in from her rubble pile and lands about 20 fee from me. This isn’t unusual really as you become landscape they just ignore you. What was I to do? Should I have disturbed her and moved? Or should I just sit there and enjoy the bird? I chose to sit and enjoy her. Either way I’m not a threat and she wasn’t worried. Like last week birds have wings, they fly when under stress and she would be no different. She’s flying due to a territorial dispute not me. SO was I too close to the bird? If I walked up on her I’d probably say yes, however she made the decision to land in close proximity. DO I walk up on birds that close? No of course I don’t I have glass I use it. If I didn’t tell you would you know? Of course you wouldn’t. Would you assume or just enjoy? Normally I don’t recommend using social media of any type for education, it tends to be the rehashed google search or opinion of someone not qualified to express it. Here’s what I know from experience and viewing of others. Actual in field research. If you kill something or bother something for a photo, don’t. If it’s asleep, let it be asleep, it’ll wake up eventually. If you flush it, you were too close, learn from it. Don’t repeat it. They burn energy when they fly, they have to make that up and it can be life or death if food is scarce. If the bird remains and is calm (ie doesn’t fly off) it’s probably fine. Take your photos everyone is happy. All that info for free and I didn’t shame anyone.
