I remember this Nerodia!🐍What can he tell us about urban wildlife? 🤔 . Ive been going through old pictures for a paper Im finishing up and this Banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) brought me right back to the surveys! . In fact, he actually was the last individual found during a 6 month span of surveys at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary near downtown Houston. . This little 17 acre plot of land is surrounded by highways, housing, and mimosa laden brunch spots. . But damn does it have an impressive amount of herps! 🐍🐸🐢🦎 . Combing information from surveys and iNaturalist, we concluded that a total of 24 species of herpetofauna could be found on the property . From Narrow-Mouth Toads to Nerodia, this little urban sanctuary serves as an enclave for wildlife in the middle of a bustling city. . So why dont other parks have this amount of wildlife? 🤔 . Well a big reason is that the park was left as natural as possible. Dirt trails criss cross through a forest of native plants. . A team of community volunteers are constantly on the property caring for and keeping it a sanctuary for wildlife. . On top of that, staff members who were awesome and passionate for nature filled the site. . Honestly, that little park serves as a fantastic model for how nature can still exist in the middle of a city . And think about who that affects. . Sure, the wildlife have a safe place to call home, but also the nearby human residents gain so much. . Kids who grew up in a concrete jungle now have immediate access to Nature and wildlife. . A community is built around the park, but also within it. Volunteers care for trails, plants, and animals during their free time. . Edith L Moore serves a fantastic role in the age where we become more disconnected from nature. Where its easier to not see a wild animal for weeks on end. Serpientes que no son serpientes Parte 1/3 En la vida cotidiana, los nombres comunes o vulgares nos ayudan mucho a relacionarnos con la fauna. Pero a veces, pueden ser confusos y llevar a errores. Este es el caso de la Viborita de Cristal (Ophiodes vertebralis), el cual en realidad ¡es un lagarto! Los lagartos de este género tienen la característica de haber perdido sus extremidades en el proceso evolutivo. Su aspecto y comportamiento pueden simular los de una culebra, pero si se toma con cuidado al individuo se pueden observar vestigios (restos) de piernas, ahora totalmente sin función. Estos lagartos se alimentan de insectos y tienen hábitos fosforiales, es decir que viven en el suelo y usualmente debajo de alguna cobertura. - Some nonvenomous snakes can strike just as quickly as venomous vipers. Researchers used high-speed cameras to measure the strike speeds of two viper species along with Texas rat snakes, a nonviper species that lacks venom. They were all evenly matched in speed.

When threatened, this non-venomous snake stiffens its body into a straight line. It is native to SE Asia and subsists mainly on frogs.

A new species of Wolfsnake of the genus Lycodon was discovered from South India. (Lycodon deccanensis sp.nov) Based on the taxonomic investigations of the unidentified Lycodon sp from Ganesh et al. 2018, a group of scientists lead by S.R.Ganesh him self,were able to correctly identify the taxon after 125 years. The new snake closely resembles Travancore Wolfsnake (Lycodon travencoricus) and was previously wrongfully identified as a one. Earliest known records dates back to 1891 where Sclater collected specimens from South Arcot, Tamil Nadu but misidentified as L.travancoricus. The new snake is currently known from the Deccan Plateau hence the name Lycodon deccanensis was given. The new snake also shows ontogenic color shift as L.travancoricus. it can be distinguished from the later by the combination of the following characters. subcaudals often undivided; loreal in contact with internasal; nasal not in contact with prefrontal; anterior genials subequal to posterior pair; supraocular usually contacting prefrontal; preocular usually not contacting frontal. With the description of Lycodon deccanensis, the authors have restricted the range of L.travancoricus to Western Ghats and Southern Eastern Ghats by identifying the previous specimens from outside the Western Ghats as Lycodon anamallensis and Lycodon aulicus. So I was talking to my friend today about peoples misconception of our precious snakes. We have a lot of reptile and animal “influencers” including myself that forget to focus on the importance of our snake species as a part of our ecosystems as well as making sure that we are being a proper voice for them. Snakes are not bad and they aren’t aggressive at all. There is a huge deference between defending yourself because you are afraid and being aggressive. Snakes are defensive and when they strike at me they are not being aggressive in anyway. All they want to do is get away. Snakes don’t chase us, they don’t hunt us and they most certainly do not bite because they are big and bad. They rather use their previous energy and/venoms to hunt their desired prey than waste it on us. I only handle to educate and I release them right away. I do need to make sure that if the content doesn’t deliver a message that my captions do from now on. Please help hold us reptile and animal handlers accountable for what we stand for. The media has already done enough damage and we don’t need to make it worse!
