I’ve owned Timothy Keller’s book on prayer for at least four years, and somehow I’m just getting around to reading it. Maybe the Lord knew I would need it now. Prayer is hard for me. I don’t know why, but it always has been. Hard for me to feel okay asking for help, asking for wisdom, asking for comfort. What I didn’t realize was how wholly selfish that was. As Keller says, “Prayer is the only entryway into genuine self-knowledge. It is also the main way we experience deep change—the reordering of our loves. Prayer is how God gives us so many of the unimaginable things he has for us. Indeed, prayer makes it safe for God to give us many of the things we most desire. FOLGE 34 Vor anderthalb Jahren bin ich an einem Tinnitus erkrankt. Er hat meinen kompletten Alltag vereinnahmt, sogar meine Traumwelt. Bis mir jemand eine Kamera in die Hand gedrückt hat. Bei meinem ersten Shooting hörte das Geräusch schlagartig auf. Aus einer Therapie wurde eine Passion – ohne Plan, ohne Ziel und ohne Konzept. Ich folge auch heute keinem Regelwerk und möchte auch nicht damit anfangen. Die Fotografie ist die Leinwand für mein Innenleben, für meine Wahrnehmung von Schönheit. Ich habe die Welt schon immer mit anderen Augen betrachtet. Nun habe ich angefangen, das in Bildern festzuhalten. Fotografie bedeutet für mich: Momente kreieren, genießen und leben. Mit keinem anderen Menschen als dem, der gerade vor mir steht. Ich zelebriere und erkenne die Schönheit in Menschen, bei dem der ein oder andere zweimal hinschauen muss, um zu sehen, was ich sehe. Aber auch dieses Bild steht nie final. An vielen Models, mit denen ich von Beginn an arbeite, erkenne ich jedes Shooting eine neue Facette ihrer Persönlichkeit. Und es fasziniert mich immer wieder aufs Neue. Ich schreibe keinem Model vor, was es anzieht. Es muss das sein, worin es sich wohlfühlt. Ich fange Momente mit Menschen ein, ich bilde keine Puppen ab. Models sind für mich keine Objekte, es sind meine Musen. Und wenn man sich die Zeit nimmt, findet man Verletzlichkeit, Rebellion, Freiheit, Authentizität. Und die entdecke ich oftmals in der Nudeart. Denn nackt zu sein, heißt, man selbst zu sein, sich nicht zu verstecken. Ich liebe die Kommunikation mit den Models. Ich liebe das Pure und Unverfälschte, das sich manchmal nur in Details zeigt. Und ich lerne von Ihnen, ich lerne jeden Tag dazu. Alles ist ein Prozess. Ich habe kein Interesse an Perfektion, was für mich perfekt ist, definiere ich selbst. Das beste Shooting ist das, bei dem das Model vergisst, dass es vor der Kamera steht – nur dann kann ich einfangen, was einen Menschen wirklich ausmacht. Jede Person hat etwas Einzigartiges, ich vergleiche nicht. Fotografie und Models sind für mich eine unerschöpfliche Quelle der Inspiration. Natürlich entwickle ich immer wieder Ideen. VI. Lovers 🎢 Ah, to be a teen witch again! I remember being a young, sexually frustrated catholic school student and hoping (nay, praying) for the Lovers to come up in a reading. I spent so much energy thinking about love, wanting to obtain it. ∙ Because at the time, love was not something I had permission to give myself. I had to wait for it to appear as a bequest from some stranger, or some Tarot card nominating me as a candidate. Somehow, I had been convinced that love was something to receive, to wait for, to pine for. I had no agency in the matter. So I waited around and drew Tarot cards and let incredibly lame bois break my heart over stupid, stupid things. I wish this ended in high school, but it carried through all four years of college and beyond. ∙ I believed this to be true of romantic love, but it extended beyond that. I didnt have a source for self-love, either. That, too, would have to come from another person. How did this idea get planted in my brain? Why did I feel like I had absolutely no grounds to begin a relationship, to put myself out there and give of myself? Who stripped me of my agency? ∙ We grow up and we learn that love is deeper, more complicated, than the various categories that weve established for it. I feel lucky that Ive learned about agency in love, that I have the capacity to give love, and the voice to ask for love, and the space to receive love. You do, too. The no-see-ums and I agree: she’s one tasty snack. 4. She puts up with our wild and bossy child all day every day and still loves us both. 5. Day 21 - THE PERFECT QUESTION FOR MY BOOK! “What would your characters do during lockdown?” I wrote YOU AND ME AT THE END OF THE WORLD long before there was any hint of this pandemic, because the image of girl walking down an empty 12-lane highway was so fascinating and foreign to me. Too bad we all know what empty streets look like now. But instead of having to be holed up with her parents, the MC in my book gets to be with a boy her age. Which is a lot more fun, right?! Here’s what Hannah and Leo would do in lockdown: Hannah has a fully equipped ballet studio in her basement. She’d spend hours down there, trying to shield herself mentally by ignoring reality. Leo is a bit of a rule-breaker. So he’d probably go on lots of drives in his rusty old car, listening to 80s rock on the loudest possible volume. Also trying to ignore reality. This is exactly what Hannah and Leo are doing at the beginning of YOU AND ME AT THE END OF THE WORLD, when they wake up miles away from each other, both convinced they’re the only ones left in the city. Good morning from the inside of a house to wherever you are. It’s good to have a house, to be safe in this time and to be connected by any means possible. In this case through the internet and thanks to @Equallens. I placed 2nd runner up in their recent competition with my images of Jane ironing and Woody watching the Space X launch (scroll down to see those). I am grateful for all of this. However, possibly like you, I did not used to spend this much time inside houses or on the internet. Before March I preferred to be on the street on my feet making portraits of strangers and writing about those connections (see @gmotophotos), on a motorcycle traversing landscapes (@hengetohenge), or on a tour bus documenting the impact a musician has on her audience and the impact the tour had on her (@amandapalmer). My name is Gabrielle Motola and I’m a photographer and writer based in London having been here since 2000 (from NYC) with a five year sojourn in Iceland. There I wrote the story-picture-book “An Equal Difference” (@anequaldifference) about equality, society and the individual, inspired by the ideas I discovered through portraits and interviews with some of the great minds there. I begin my three day takeover of this account in Iceland. I’ll take you to the Faroe Islands by motorcycle, across Europe and back to London where I’ll bring you to the street to meet some strangers. People are my preferred subjects, but the time I spent in Iceland drew me to landscapes. My work is about connection; our desire for it, the joy it brings, but also our fear of having it and losing it. This image from the chapter “On Pools” was made in the geothermally heated Secret Lagoon in Fludir. The lagoon isn’t so much of a secret anymore but when this photograph was made, it was far less crowded. The geothermal energy of Iceland is one of gifts of the earth and makes their bathing culture (and more) possible, enjoyable, and even essential. During lockdown their pools and bathing areas were closed for six weeks. I was told recently that Icelanders didn’t realise until now just how important bathing and swimming were to their daily lives. England has pubs. Iceland has hot tubs. - @equallens on Instagram

Custom frames cost an arm and leg and Ive always been disappointed with the quality so I decided to make my own. This was my first attempt at making a frame and I had a few hiccups, like every project, but I thought it turned out well. Im working on a mahogany one now. It starts as a feeling. A wave of emotions pouring into your lungs and exhaling between your lips you realize it’s a temporary void, subconsciously filling space. Testing time and wasting days. Days spent wondering why you sometimes feel like your sludging through mud, while scaling a mountain and it’s pouring down rain. Do you ever feel that? Those undoubtedly difficult days, where you swear to god there is someone planting bad seeds left and right on every corner for you to encounter. Making you wish you could crawl up underneath a blanket, watch the stars fall behind a mountains ridges. Hide far away where the sun radiantly shines its tender gold and pink hues, or run as fast as you can to the ocean and pretend like nothing exists but your feet sinking beneath you. You wonder what makes everything bearable. Tolerable. Acceptable. Simply ok. It’s moments spent driving hours upon hours listening to podcasts, while trees rapidly pass you by. Stopping on the side of the road to stretch your limbs and absorb the journey. Understanding that your world could be a hell of a lot worse and the shitty things in life put that into perspective. I am thankful to be breathing. Sleeping underneath a roof. Clothes on my back, food in my fridge. A working car with gas to transport me to the places I need to be. A job where I feel valued and accepted. Humans surrounding me that love and appreciate me wholeheartedly. A phone that... kinda sorta works and allows me to share my artwork with beautiful people. While life is certainly hard and (if your anything like me) feel low when things repeatedly go wrong, it’s worth taking a step back to appreciate what you do have and the abundance we each share. - @kayleekepple on Instagram

FAIXA A FAIXA🟡7/12 - volta e meia - Essa gravação tem um carinho especial por conta dos ilustríssimos convidados que participam :) @devendrabanhart e shintaro sakamoto @zelone_records ! já eramos fãs deles, tínhamos conhecido o devendra abrindo o show dele em sp. mas num festival na alemanha onde tocamos todos rolou uma grande de uma buena onda entre nós, assistindo juntos um o show do outro. volta e meia já estava em produção e pedindo um discurso emocionado, tivemos a ideia de ser o shintaro recitando em japonês. seguido pelo devendra cantando o verso em espanhol. convidamos eles por email mesmo, e cada um mandou sua parte do seu país. quando juntou tudo a gente pulava comemorando pelo estúdio sem acreditar. uma alegria intercontinental. curiosidade: quando vimos a tradução do discurso que o shintaro criou a música mudou de sentido. ele fala sobre estou num quarto escuro/não reconheço o homem no espelho que me observa/meu eu do passado segue me perseguindo. isso foi um baque. porque inverte todo sentido amoroso da faixa e do disco pra essa ótica de estar numa busca interna. quem eu era, quem eu sou, quem eu vou ser. isso está pelo disco todo e é como um sentido paralelo e secreto para todos os vocês do disco. uma relação com si mesmo, com o passado. uma reflexão sobre os caminhos futuros. 📷 @bielbasile - @o_terno on Instagram

What do you do when you meet your shadow? Do you run? Do you try to hide yourself or bury it? Do you try to numb out? Do you resist it? Do you confront it? I’ve been taking a course that has been shifting my perspective about our Shadow side. And how we can actually use it to propel us towards what we want versus be one more thing that we’re trying to keep hidden as if it’s a blown up Beachball and we’re trying to hold it under the surface of the water. The course considers the seven deadly sins as examples. To remind us they are, in no particular order 1️⃣ wrath 2️⃣ envy 3️⃣ lust 4️⃣ gluttony 5️⃣ sloth 6️⃣ greed 7️⃣ pride The teacher’s idea is that these examples of our shadow can also be great motivators. The shadow is just as much a part of us as is the light and by ignoring it we’re ignoring part of ourselves. So instead of fighting against it. Why not use it? For example while I love that the work I do with my naturopathic patients and spiritual coaching clients improves health, well-being, relationships and community impact (the light side) I also want to live and abundant life which could be considered greed, lust, and gluttony. These shadow elements are just as much drivers as the altruistic ones. I think this is a really interesting thing to consider. I want to grow my business because I want to help people Aaaaaaaaand I want to know abundance and who’s kidding who.... some luxury from time to time. Both are true. Both are valid. And both are incredible fuel. And the more aware we are of this the more likely we can use it to our advantage. Think of it like this. If my subconscious believes that wanting nice things is greedy, glutinous, or lustful because of what I was taught when I was young do you think I’ll really be able to generate the income that I want? And money of course is just one example. I’m so curious to know. What are your thoughts about this? How does it feel to consider this side of you in a new way? Notice what’s going on in your body because I know this might be really triggering for some people. And that’s okay too. That’s kinda why I’m here... to shift perspective and open up your divine creative power. - @drtonia on Instagram
