Institutional racism that occurs in Essex secondary schools is something that is often swept under the rug. Our age and naivety made it difficult to grasp the true gravity of the situation(s) that occurred. Punishment for those who speak out against racism is extremely common and racism is often normalised, being labelled as a ‘joke’ This along with a huge disconnect between black students and the schools themselves makes it difficult for student alumni to attempt to make a change in a school where their voices were never heard in the first place. Southend High School for Girls, Davenant Foundation School and Caterham High School are all schools I’ve attended. Each as rampantly racist as the next. The amount of racism I’ve experienced in my collective years in these institutions is quite frankly embarrassing, but what’s even more embarrassing is the denial that these attitudes run rife from year 7 all the way to year 13. The lack of education surrounding black culture is little to none and from all the history lessons I had at SHSG, I can only account for 2 surrounding black culture both of which spoke solely about slavery. Whilst this was a stagnant part of our culture, it was only ever covered from a third person narrative, as if it were something that the UK had absolutely nothing to do with and they just heard about it through the grape vine. Microaggressions were some Davenant student’s favourite pass time and racism from the Asian community at Caterham was a part of the daily timetable so much, it might as well have had its own period. Whilst I’m aware my complexion saved me from a lot of racial abuse that could have made my time at these schools a hell of a lot worse, I’m not going to pretend that it didn’t happen. Colourism is a conversation for another day. Stigma around having these conversation in schools needs to be broken down. If racism truly ‘no longer exists’ in the UK, there should be no issue speaking about how much FUN black people have had for the past 400 years AND counting, right? Pushing for black culture to be included in school curriculum is not alarming or uncomfortable, it is necessary. - @shekinahrj on Instagram

Recently a friend introduced me to the work of the filmmaker and documentarian Elija Hasan ( @elijah_hasan )who does a ton of great film work especially in Portland, so I learned from Elija’s Vimeo. Recommend you check it out now: https://vimeo.com/elijahhasan I am particularly interested in the clip from the film Darker Than Blue, which features interviews from ‘lice or former ‘lice officers who are black. The experiences they share are important to hear. Especially as we collectively push harder to eliminate yt suprmist presence in our area, especially in power positions like the ‘lice force, and around the country. In the clip, some of the people say they joined in order to change the force from with in. And it seems some did eventually take off the badge. Some say they stay because they know they are making a difference. We want to start by thanking all of you for the overwhelming support we have received since reopening, we wouldnt still be here without all of you! As many of you are aware, we are operating with reduced hours and staff. Our regulars and locals have been extremely appreciative, supportive and generous with their tips, however many of the tourists have not. The problem is getting worse, not better. Last night, as our servers ran food out to customers in the pouring rain they made less than $70 each. We do pay them more than a normal server hourly wage, however the bulk of their income does still come from tips which they use to pay rent and utilities, pay for college and health insurance and buy food for their families. If they do not make enough tips, we are supplementing their pay to make up for it as we could not run our business without them. These servers that are working now, for us and for other businesses, chose to come off unemployment and return to work, thereby forfeiting the extra $600 a week from unemployment. I dont believe they should be penalized for that. For those of you that do tip on your takeout orders, thank you! For those of you that dont Im hoping that reading this might give you some food for thought. Restaurants are operating through the largest crisis to hit our industry in history, fighting to keep their doors open. It seems in the early months of this pandemic everyone appreciated that fact, however now it seems that like with many other important issues we are quick to forget. The message is direct and personal, written in the artist’s hand. It is framed before and after with vibrant swelling colors from the language of protection from danger that signal: ‘the person wearing these colors is precious-take care!’ The artwork is viewable throughout a network of locations designed to reach New York City’s public service workers - from transit and sanitation workers to essential workers continuing their daily commute. “For —– forever…” aims to commemorate the efforts and undertakings of public service workers, specifically during the last few months. .
Since 1977, Ukeles has been the official, unsalaried artist-in-residence @nycsanitation and has created pieces that encompass the infinite maintenance work that keeps New York City functioning. One of her most notable projects is “Touch Sanitation” (1979-1980), in which she shook hands with all 8,500 employees of the New York Sanitation Department along their routes and places of work, saying to each worker, face to face: “Thank you for keeping NYC alive!”. “Now,” says Ukeles, “four decades later, in the midst of this horrific pandemic, my statement becomes newly relevant to the city’s infrastructure service workers, who are physically out there working every day to make sure our city remains a living entity.” .

Repost from @tessahulls • You may have heard there’s a push to use the name Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) over Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ). Here’s the context behind that. I’ll be making a series of comics in this style where I set out to answer questions I keep hearing about the space. A few I’d like to explore are: How is the space being kept safe (this overlaps with the question: are there people with guns?)? Why did the protests end up here (this is a fun one that has to do with topography!)? Why did the police leave the East Precinct? I’ve been interviewing people on the ground but could really use your help getting personally connected to some of the organizers because there is—very justifiably—a lot of hesitation to talk to an outsider. For those of you who newly started following me, hello! Welcome! I’m a visual storyteller and research dork who works in a bunch of different mediums to explore the intersections of gender/race/history. I’m part of the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau and travel throughout the state giving an illustrated lecture about women who broke gender barriers in the early 1900s. I also travel nationally with an illustrated talk on Women, Trans, and Femme Riders in Early Cycling History, which explores the 150-year intersectional history of the bicycle as a tool for social change. I’m under book deadline for a graphic memoir that traces the intergenerational trauma of my mom and grandma’s flight from China as refugees, but I could not in good conscience sit on the sidelines of this moment. So I’m instead here in the CHOP doing comics journalism from the ground. I’ve lived in the Seattle area for 12+ years including five years living on 16th and Denny, so this is an area and community I know well and am a part of.
