Astra’s ‘Rocket 3.1’ taking off from Kodiak Island, Alaska, on Friday, September 11. Astra is a privately-developed launch company founded in 2016 by Chris Kemp and Adam London, based out of Alameda, California. The company’s first attempt to reach orbit on Friday ended prematurely after crashing during the first stage burn. The rocket did successfully launch, however, and achieved a good amount of nominal flight time. The 11.6-meter (38-foot) tall Rocket 3.1 is powered by five Astra-built Delphin main engines, which generate around 31,500 pounds of thrust. Liftoff Friday occurred after several scrubbed launches in August, but Astra officials said Saturday that a software fix will likely resolve the guidance system problem that caused the first stage engines to cut out and the rocket to crash, and that the next launch with Rocket 3.2 could be possible before the end of the year. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk offered his condolences to Astra CEO Chris Kemp on Twitter saying, “Sorry to hear that. I’m sure you’ll figure it out though. Took us four launches to reach orbit. Rockets are hard.” Kemp replied, “Thanks Elon! Digging into the data so we can figure this out. The company’s live launch webcast will start at 10:30 a.m. and air on NASA Television and the agency’s website. The rockets flight path is relevant to lunar landings, providing a unique opportunity to mature sensors and algorithms for potential use on Artemis missions. NASA Langleys navigation Doppler lidar technology will be the second sensor system to fire up during the flight test. The new sensor uses a laser to enable precise soft landings on the Moon and Mars. Navigation Doppler lidar sends laser beams to the surface and detects the reflected returns to determine the lander’s velocity and altitude. The Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter (LVSA), the penultimate (second to last) piece of the first Space Launch System (SLS), NASA’s heavy-lift rocket, was offloaded from NASA’s Pegasus barge on the Florida coast on July 30, 2020. The LVSA connects two major sections of the upper part of SLS - the core stage and the interim cryogenic propulsion stage. The largest and final section of the rocket to arrive will be the core stage, which is expected to be transported to Kennedy Space Center later this year after a crucial test-firing in Mississippi. The entire fit-out of Project Falcon’s engine room, including the installation procedure for this latest model of MTU engines, followed an entirely new procedure for Heesen. In collaboration with Van Riel, a Dutch company renowned for complex industrial transportations, the two 13.2-ton engines were slid into the hull via the beach club and carefully positioned in the engine room. By November 9, 1967 this Saturn V rocket was ready for launch and the first full test of its capabilities on the Apollo 4 mission. • 🔶 Its development directed by rocket pioneer Wernher Von Braun, the three stage Saturn V stood over 36 stories tall.
