Ouch, that was a hard one @redbulldolomitenmann 😌 This mountain run up to the Kuhbodentörl past Saturday was one of the hardest experiences in my life as a professional athlete. Right off the gun I just didn’t have the legs to compete with the top guys, had to go deep in the very first part already and got dropped pretty early. The rest of the race was an intense trip to the deepest places of my body and mind. I tell you, it’s a long way up to the finish line and there’s quite a lot of time to think about life, your performance and most important: not loosing too much time for the team! It’s been an intense experience but in the end I think it’s the tough days that really help you in the development as a human being and as an athlete. Somehow I made it to the line and what should I say: The other guys @paulguschlbauer @haraldhudetz @danielgeismayr just killed it! As a team we moved up to 2nd and had a pretty good day in beautiful Lienz. U.S Men’s World Cup speed skier, Wiley “Danger” Maple (@wcmaple), is officially calling it a career. I had the chance to meet Wiley two years ago while racing in the @usalpinemasters FIS Masters/Western Regional events at @aspensnowmass . He showed up to the DH race. He is younger than me, and I was running DFL, so they slotted him in right after me. The rush, excitement, and terror of having a World Cup racer right behind me in a DH race at Aspen is something I’ll never forget. DH intervals are 60 seconds, but they gave him a second interval just to make sure he wouldn’t catch me 😂. He ended up beating me by around 20 seconds!! 😬🤷♂️ A lot of people knew him, but you would have no idea he was on the World Cup (besides his finish time). 😉 He was just a regular dude, talking with anyone who wanted to chat. He told us stories about some of his races, specifically the time he got yellow flagged while on course at the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel and had to go back to the top to run it again. (Yea, I’m good!). Sounds like he’s sticking around Aspen so maybe we’ll see him at a Masters race again. Congrats on a wild, fun, and crazy career! - @nems_racing on Instagram

“When I was growing up, me and my dad used to go at it all the time over almost anything. But, I used to have really long hair, way down past my shoulders. I was 17 or 18, he used to hate it. And we got to where we’d fight so much that I’d, that I’d spent a lot of time out of the house; and finally when I’d get my nerve up to go home, I’d stand there in the driveway and he’d be waiting for me in the kitchen and I’d tuck my hair down on my collar and I’d walk in and he’d call me back to sit down with him. And the first thing he’d always ask me was what did I think I was doing with myself. And the worst part of it was that I could never explain to him. I remember I got in a motorcycle accident once and I was laid up in bed and he had a barber come in and cut my hair and, man, I can remember telling him that I hated him and that I would never ever forget it. And he used to tell me: “Man, I can’t wait till the army gets you. When the army gets you they’re gonna make a man out of you. They’re gonna cut all that hair off and they’ll make a man out of you.” And this was, I guess, ’68 when there was a lot of guys from the neighborhood going to Vietnam. I remember the drummer in my first band coming over to my house with his marine uniform on, saying that he was going and that he didn’t know where it was. And a lot of guys went, and a lot of guys didn’t come back. And the lot that came back weren’t the same anymore. I remember the day I got my draft notice. I hid it from my folks and three days before my physical me and my friends went out and we stayed up all night and we got on the bus to go that morning and man we were all so scared… And I went, and I failed. ⛰️🏃 ¿De dónde vienes? 🏔️🏞️ . Este verano en Picos de Europa⛰️ y en Ordesa🏞️ y Monte Perdido🏔️ he visto muchísimas personas en la montaña. Creo que toda la que faltaba en Plaza Catalunya estaba allí con nosotros 😅🤪. . Pero más gente tb se traduce en más accidentes 🚑🚁. . Un primer punto importante es la pregunta con la que empiezo este post.🤔 ¿De dónde vienes?. Yo crecí de joven en un club de montaña⛰️ y patee y aprendí muchísimo. Luego me dió por correr en ella, pero estos conocimientos de alpinismo y, sobretodo, seguridad, prevención de riesgo y evaluación de situaciones van conmigo cada minuto allí arriba.🔝 Pero hoy, gracias a las redes sociales e Internet🌍, la montaña🏞️ parece muy muy chula🤩 y atractiva (que lo es). También parece muy accesible y fácil y, sin los conocimientos necesarios ni la experiencia, te puedes encontrar fácilmente en problemas gordos☠️. . El segundo problema tb viene de lo fácil que nos muestran todo. ¿Dónde está el límite?🛑 ¿Hasta dónde puedo llegar?🤔 Si lo hace éste o aquel, ¡yo tb puedo!💪💪💪 Si y no... Está genial ponerse retos y aventuras, de ellos aprendes y te hacen más fuerte🤯🤪. Pero pasito a pasito🐢. La mayoría de veces no vemos el trabajo y los años que hay detrás de lo que nos parece tan fácil por Internet. Y muchas cosas nos parecen fáciles o asequibles por desconocimiento. . Disfrutad de la montaña 🏔️, poneros retos e id a por todas🚀. Pero con cabeza y, si dudáis, buscad consejo👍, informaros bienℹ️ y planear todos los casos y situaciones que pueden pasar; porqué si váis mucho a la montaña, pasarán! y hay que estar listo para saber que hacer y reaccionar a tiempo. 🤟 .
