✅Having been training consistently since 1980, I’ve gone through most every “type” of training over those 4 decades, using ‘most’ every “traditional” exercise, methodology, system, and style known for dedicated phases over that time. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅Some of these practices “worked better” than others for me, and some—in hindsight— only caused “issues” after the first workout. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅Aside from training for a specific sport that depends on a certain tool-of-loading (eg PowerLifting), productive training is in selecting the most ‘efficient’ exercises AND form of resistance that works ‘with’ your body’s innate mechanics and the law of physics. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅You may be able to violate foundational training principles of biomechanics or physics for a period of time and seem to “get away with it” yet there are “hidden” consequences occurring that will at some point come-to-surface. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ 🛎Productive training requires: 1️⃣Effectiveness 2️⃣Efficiency 3️⃣Sustainability 🔄Period. 🔺While there’s a % of population that is content with just “exercising” in a way that entertains themselves, “pays their dues” by burning calories, or at least keeps them “active”, there are those who want to experience the highest ‘return-on-investment’ for their time and energy, AND to actualize as close to their genetic potential in muscular development as possible 🤔 ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ✅The only training resource I’ve come across in continuous study through these years that can be referred to as ‘the final say’ on optimal EXERCISE SELECTION and EXECUTION is Doug Brignole’s THE PHYSICS of RESISTANCE EXERCISE (TPRE) 🔺With the multitude of books on fitness, S&C, bodybuilding out there... how can any single book be called “the final say”? 🔺Simply due to the fact that TPRE is based on universal laws of physics and human anatomy. Unfortunately it’s really easy to fall victim of a bad technique and “ego-boosting stretch” here since the first thing you wanna do is to drive your body as close as possible to your legs. You can easily obtain this effect by curving your lower and middle back area and ta-dan! Here’s your complete pike stretch! But guess what you’re stretching this way? Your lower and middle back. Not your hamstrings or better, not in the best way you can. An easy strategy for avoiding this mistake is to drive your head forward: by driving your head forward you’ll obtain a much better lower and middle back activation since your spine STARTS from your head and moving that body part greatly influences the rest of it. So, by pushing your head forward you’ll improve the correct activations you need in the stretch, which are: ✅ Anterior pelvic tilt. ✅ Straight lower and middle back. ✅ Straight legs. ✅ Opened chest. The hamstrings are a commonly used muscle group that have a prominent role in Hip Extension and Knee Flexion, and plays a critical role in stabilizing the knee joint during movement. When considering the biomechanical analysis of occupational tasks, the hamstring complex is involved in many fire ground tasks. This suggests a level of importance to emphasize this muscle group when developing lower limb strength. 🔥🚒 Hip Extension and Knee Flexion are body movements that occur frequently when firefighters complete tasks such as lifting items from the ground, climbing stairs, advancing hose, and when dragging a victim - just to name a few. 🔥🚒 A comprehensive physical training program should include these type of body movements (See the photos above for some ideas), as they are likely to develop adequate levels of strength. 🔥🚒 There may be some benefit with simulating fire ground tasks that require hip extension and knee flexion during physical training. An example of this would be a reverse sled drag (walking backwards) to replicate dragging a victim to safety. However, caution should be taken when being creative with exercise programming so that a training program doesn’t turn into a circus act. The focus should remain on using safe and effective exercises for the development of muscular strength/endurance, and injury prevention. 🔥🔥🔥 Disclaimer: The “Good morning” exercise requires kinesthetic awareness for good form (as do all lifts), and may be an exercise that provides more risk than reward. The weight difference is 4 pounds. Please comment on which pose in each sequence, left or right represents a 4 pound weight gain. does conditioning looks similar? sarcopenia does not necessarily happen at a certain age. as we age muscle is metabolically expensive to maintain so if you don’t use it your body will get rid of it to use that energy in other areas of your body that you also need to maintain your health. In a year where kids have had to social distance, do e-learning, be on lock down at home, and so many other things that have forced them to not get the social interactions that they need, it was great to take a small group of kids through the 4 mile course at @highlanderassault. There is something amazing about watching kids work together, cheer each other on, overcoming fears, trying new things, and out there just having fun. When we started the race, we had decided to skip the swim, because it was a bit chilly out and we didnt want the kiddos to be cold and miserable for the rest of the race. However, when we came up to the slide, they all asked if we could do it. So...swim we did. For some of the carries we modified, such as the atlas stone, the kids rolled it instead of carrying it. For the yoke carry, two kids shared one. You just gotta get creative and find ways to make it fun for them. It was also nice to see other families out there with their kiddos. Weve said it before, OCR is so great for families to do something fun together. If you ever have a chance to race alongside your kiddos, do it. It is some of the best times our family has. At 19 years old, I had reached my goal! I had become downright lean. This was the goal I wanted so bad. My face became angular, veins visible all over. It was epic! ⁣ ⁣ There was only one problem! There was no way in hell I was going to sustain it. My diet was brutal. I was existing off 1700 calories per day and minimal carbs. I was hitting the weights 4-5 days per week and smashing the treadmill. ⁣ ⁣ I skipped nights out with my friends... I skipped fun cottage weekends and yes, date nights... I became somewhat of a hermit.. Unshakably obsessed with reaching my goal. Even my sister made a comment about how I was a total loner (she put it in a nicer way). ⁣ ⁣ I knew something deep down. I was building a house of cards.... It was just going to be a matter of time before things came crashing down. ⁣Sheer will power and determination enabled me to reach my goal. But there was no way in hell I was going to sustain it. ⁣ ⁣ I broke... I started binging and packing on weight. Id try my absolute best to pull in the reins and go back to my strict diet. But I couldnt stick to it. I felt as though I was caught in quicksand. The harder I tried to get out, the deeper I sank. ⁣(me on left) ⁣ Eventually I ballooned up to 195 lbs. I had gained 20 pounds of body fat, while trying desperately to stay ripped.⁣ ⁣ Most people at this point, make the conclusion that being really lean just isnt possible. Yet, for some reason, I was unwilling to let go of my goal.⁣ ⁣ Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I only had one solution left. ⁣ ⁣ I had to go completely against the grain. I had to test a whole new training and nutrition protocol. A protocol that would enable me to get leaner and stronger while fully enjoying the process. ⁣ ⁣ Everything I teach inside my program was born out of the pits of my failure. I want to show you just how good life can become. ⁣ ⁣ You do not have to choose between looking like a movie star and being able to enjoy life. Transformation Tuesday and recap of the past 20 weeks. After winning the overall in MPD at Easterns in 2019 and testing the waters at NPC Nationals, @anthonymantello and I agreed that a little break from dieting was needed (being only 17 years young, I felt as though this was the best move for all intensive purposes... enjoy Senior year of HS for a bit 😂) so we regrouped in February. (Pictured on the left).⁣ ⁣ Fast forward to today where we are about 6.5 weeks out from North Americans (pictured on the right). Anthony sits approx. 15 lbs lighter and has done a fantastic job accruing some tissue while pulling off body fat (the impossible some might say..)⁣ ⁣ The plan from here is to turn things up a bit and ensure we bring the level of conditioning needed without pulling off a ton of the newly accrued tissue in the process. How will we ensure we minimize the muscle loss? Anthony and I have been fortunate enough to train together a few times per week (via Zoom and Skype of course..social distancing 🙂) for the last 8 weeks or so and will continue to do so. For as long as I can remember I’ve always been obsessed with having crazy looking 6 pack abs. If you’re like me then follow along because I’m giving you a crash course on abs. In my observations many people either focus too much on their abs and neglect everything else or they neglect their abs completely until it’s time to cut. I will never be one of those people who only trains my abs when I am in a cut. I train them year round and with weight. If you only train them while cutting they’re not going to grow much. No need to over or under do it either, just train them consistently like you would everything else. People get surprised when I explain that I only ever do 3 different ab exercises . But, that’s all I do personally. I like a weighted decline crunch, a weighted reverse crunch and a weighted lying leg lift. That’s it. The rest, I simply do not feel in my abdomen. Even this picture of me simulating a hanging leg lift I do not do. Actually, it’s my least favorite ab movement (all hip). It just makes for a good picture because of the lat flare. I also do not perform any oblique isolation exercises. Side crunches build out the side walls out giving the waist a blockier look. Aesthetically you don’t want to build your waist out. Your obliques get plenty of work from your normal training so there is absolutely no need to add more in. The takeaway: Choose your preferred exercises, stick to them consistently year round, then diet the fat off after you’ve built enough muscle. “When I was growing up, me and my dad used to go at it all the time over almost anything. But, I used to have really long hair, way down past my shoulders. I was 17 or 18, he used to hate it. And we got to where we’d fight so much that I’d, that I’d spent a lot of time out of the house; and finally when I’d get my nerve up to go home, I’d stand there in the driveway and he’d be waiting for me in the kitchen and I’d tuck my hair down on my collar and I’d walk in and he’d call me back to sit down with him. And the first thing he’d always ask me was what did I think I was doing with myself. And the worst part of it was that I could never explain to him. I remember I got in a motorcycle accident once and I was laid up in bed and he had a barber come in and cut my hair and, man, I can remember telling him that I hated him and that I would never ever forget it. And he used to tell me: “Man, I can’t wait till the army gets you. When the army gets you they’re gonna make a man out of you. They’re gonna cut all that hair off and they’ll make a man out of you.” And this was, I guess, ’68 when there was a lot of guys from the neighborhood going to Vietnam. I remember the drummer in my first band coming over to my house with his marine uniform on, saying that he was going and that he didn’t know where it was. And a lot of guys went, and a lot of guys didn’t come back. And the lot that came back weren’t the same anymore. I remember the day I got my draft notice. I hid it from my folks and three days before my physical me and my friends went out and we stayed up all night and we got on the bus to go that morning and man we were all so scared… And I went, and I failed. May 2015 and May 2020. - In the first picture I was obsessed with performance and in the middle of a “bulk” to try and get as strong as possible. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I felt terrible and wasn’t doing my body any favors. - Fast forward to today and my daily goal is to just get some movement in. Ideally while getting some vitamin D directly from the sun. I eat intuitively and live with a rockstar nutrition coach (@arielle_bloom) that constantly reminds me to get enough vegetables and protein with every meal. I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and 7-9 hours of sleep is a non-negotiable. - I enjoy pizza, bread, cheese, and beer just as much as the next guy. I haven’t cut any of those out and when I indulge I don’t call it a cheat day and I don’t feel like I need to workout more to earn those treats. I just enjoy them when appropriate and get back to my routine the next day. - Change is simple but simple doesn’t mean easy. Things that may seem like a “challenge” will eventually become habits but you need to be patient. - Find one thing to work on. Build some momentum. Don’t set a timeline and focus on that one thing until it becomes a habit. Then move on to the next. Chairs were the worst for me. I can’t remember how many I broke. 😞 I would always have to gage weather I could sit on the foldable chairs. It was a tiring task to see if it was stable enough and strong⁠ .⁠ For a moment, I hope I can convey the chaos I would feel. I’d walk a 100ft and my lower back would give me shooting pain from walking. I would rush to find a seat and only find those that can’t support my weight. I often leaned on walls, sat on street curbs and laid out when no other option was available. I was incapable of living a normal life⁠ .⁠ I returned to the chair in the before picture this weekend and had a real moment of shock. Grateful I can walk more now and that I don’t have to second guess a chairs capability.⁠ .⁠ This is a another why for me. ...worth the read... It is time again for us to participate in Hope on the Slopes at Jay Peak 2020! This will be our 10th year participating as Team NickStrong! As most of you know, in 2010 ONE OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS AND BROTHER IN CRIME Nicholas heard the words You have cancer. At 20 years old, his young life changed in a heartbeat. Nick was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer, an ocular melanoma. The biopsy indicated that his left eye had to be removed; the following year the cancer spread to his lungs and in late 2018 to his brain. He has faced every challenge with courage, strength, determination, and hope. Right now Nick is fighting a very hard up hill battle. He has been referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas to hopefully participate in a clinical trial. Nicholas is the strongest, bravest, young dude that I know! He is a warrior! He is not giving up HOPE and neither are we! family and friends i am asking for any little help that you can give i love you all and thank you in advance for all your support and prayers. ⭕️ KETO & FAST WEIGHT LOSS ⭕️ ⠀ Key words here are 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐓 𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐌 and 𝗪𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓. ⠀ This is NOT a “one diet is better than the other” post, it’s just me explaining to you why you may experience faster WEIGHT loss when approaching a keto/low carb diet (in the first weeks) compared to a high/higher carb one. ⠀ It’s pretty simple: what makes keto wonderful is the fast initial weight loss related to carbohydrate reduction. Each gram of carbs retains 2.4-3g of water per actual gram of carb, so reducing carbohydrate intake results in a drop in bodyweight. Relax though, it’s just water: you’re just as fat as you were before, but because you’ve reduced your carb intake, you’re simply NOT retaining as much water as you previously did. However, you see your weight go down so quick so you’re placebo-ly happy. ⠀ Quite infact FAT LOSS is THE SAME, let me say it again: FAT LOSS IS THE SAME for both diets if calories are matched, and this is WHY there’s difference between saying “weight” and “fat” loss, fellas. ⠀ ..and want to lose FAT, not WEIGHT. I mean obviously by losing fat you’ll end up losing weight too but you get what I mean. ⠀ Please don’t get fooled by some diets claimed to “double fat loss”. ⠀ Calories are king, and if matched, they will provide the same exact results for every single diet. ⠀ This is why you should pick your OWN one and not follow what’s trendy. PROGRESS UPDATE! . . . Went from 11.9% BF a month ago to 10.3%. Lost 4lbs of fat (and 1.5lbs of muscle but that’s not too bad! 😀) . . . Photos show a comparison from 1 Year Ago. 14lbs difference in weight at the SAME body fat %. Roughly 9lbs are muscle, the rest is water and glycogen/food. . . . This past year I was finally able to adjust programming and diet from what I’ve learned the last few years since making my fitness training aesthetic focused. I want to give a big shout out to @rpstrength for all their knowledge (especially from @vitaminphd and @rpdrmike articles and videos). They know what they’re doing and strongly recommend anyone having trouble with dieting or programming to reach out to them. @rp_transformations . . . Weight loss journeys are hard enough as it is but there is a less talked about side that might not be thought of until you reach your “goal weight and it’s your mental health before, during and after the journey.▫️ • Many people tend to think most struggles are finding your why, figuring out where to start, struggling in the gym or finding fleeting motivation. Though when talking about extreme weight loss journeys, it’s important to understand that there’s typically a very large and complicated mental side of the “story” that never gets heard about.▫️ • After years hard work to get to where you want to be, one might endure struggles both externally and internally. I am one of those people that suffered through an internal battle because my exterior didnt match what I thought it would be when I reached my goal weight. When I reached my goal weight I would play with loose skin, wonder why I didnt look like someone who didnt have loose skin after weight loss or struggle with body dysmorphia looking bigger than I did in the mirror.▫️ • This lead into other aspects of my life because when I first started running I would never take a gel because I didn’t want extra calories because I thought I was still too big. I would skip breakfast if I missed my morning workout, I would punish myself by staying at the gym for hours or run extra kilometres because I overate. All of this is unhealthy and unfortunately my mind wouldn’t allow me to combat it. Extreme weight loss can sometimes mean you are still obsessing, just over something at the opposite end of the spectrum. I went from one extreme to another- both equally as unhealthy or unsustainable.▫️ • Along the way focus on your mental side of your health so that you can live a more sustainable lifestyle because your mental health means just as much as your physical health. Youre still as wonderful with stretch marks and/or loose skin, just think of them of a badge of honour of how far youve come.▫️ • So appreciate every step of your journey but don’t feel alone, there are many out there struggling with their bodies.
