Hey white moms, I’ve been thinking about you. We’re friends, so you probably care about Black lives. Maybe you’re protesting or donating money to state bail funds or the ACLU. Keep doing that. • But also- where are you sending your kids to school next year? My daughter is going to kindergarten, so I’ve had a lot of conversations with other white moms, liberals who are not overtly racists, who are going to great lengths to send their kids to “good” schools. This generally means schools that have some “diversity” but are segregated. A “good” school doesn’t have “behavioral” problems or low standardized test scores. White parents I know have bought and sold homes or paid up to $50,000 a year to send their kids to “good” schools. • This is coded language. The truth is that many of us don’t want to send our white kids to school with too many Black and brown children. We want a white majority. We want high school-wide test scores, because most of our child’s classmates speak English as a first language. We whisper about these things to each other and then post about how Black Lives Matter on our Instagrams. • Where you send your kid to school matters. Send your children to desegregated schools. Join the PTA. Fight for better funding. Fight for better after school programs. School districts will listen to you. You have the power and the privilege to make these schools better for Black and brown children. • I’ll link to some of the articles I read in my profile when I was trying to figure out where to send Lu. I get that we want the “best” for our kids- but think hard about what you consider the “best” to be, and at whose expense. if you want to be an anti-racist, if you want to #dothework, then don’t ship your kids off to white schools while posting MLK quotes. Hoy es nuestra última función de La Mamma en el Espacio Plural. Ya son 5 meses trabajando en este proyecto y fue todo un reto para mí. La duración, el tema, comprender la pieza, trabajar con un elenco y un director desconocidos, en un teatro con una dinámica tan distinta a mis experiencias anteriores. Tuve que repensar muchas cosas, enfrentarme a mis mañas adheridas por la costumbre y a una forma de trabajar el teatro a la que me acostumbré. Aprendí muchísimo y siento que crecí un poco en este oficio tan extenso y complejo de la interpretación. Sólo me queda agradecer la oportunidad. Wild that it’s already been four years since I first broke the news that a court had granted someone a gender change to nonbinary for the first time in history. The year that followed was an exciting blur of reporting and then watching that reporting influence policy at the state and local level not just here in the U.S., but eventually around the world. It was the first time I saw my work have an impact on that scale, and it reinvigorated my sense of journalism’s mission: to help marginalized communities have a voice and a platform, to tell stories that help people see themselves reflected in their truth. As hard as it can be to work in media, with low pay, constant layoffs, and cyclical burnout, the opportunity to not just take part in history but to help steer its direction is too good to pass up. So much has happened since these articles were written; what was then a fairly new terminology (slowly gaining speed over its predecessor, genderqueer) has become widely adopted. And now we even have our own holiday. There’s so much more I could say but I have tears in my eyes and it’s getting hard to type. However, one of my friends was the product of a dysfunctional family. That always caused some questions to linger in my mind. Do victims metamorphosize into bullies because they are unaware of what else to become? Or is passing down the legacy of their emotional baggage a source of catharsis for them? The picture in this post was a concept photoshoot about childhood innocence that I did about 5-6 years ago. I like how it went with this theme. The line My dream was to be a cigarette because that was the only thing my father never abandoned was something I heard in a video. I don’t remember previously hearing about #nationaldaughtersday but apparently it’s celebrated this weekend. I wrote about not being able to see my mother for the Globe and Mail. This week has been lovely and intense with the book in the world and more and more I feel how powerfully I want my mother to be seen and known. I am not a perfect daughter, no one is, but I feel especially far from any possible ideal. Our relationship was, like all intimate relationships, complex and filled with contradictions. My mother did not want me to tell her story. I am compelled to tell her story. That has been complicated, but what is not complicated is my love for my mother; like my love for my son, it is overwhelming in its simplicity. I love my mother and telling stories is the best way I know how to love her. It is the best tool I’ve got to fight the pressures of erasure. I need to see my mother, and part of this act of witness, of recovery, is to invite you to see her too. Vorige week werd ik gevraagd een cover te spelen in de 00’s week van Qmusic. Ik koos voor ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ van Keane. Ik vond dit altijd een hele mooie song...voor mij gaat het over het (her)vinden van jezelf...het simpele opnieuw bijzonder vinden...je oorsprong herontdekken.
