We went late because we had to wait for the low tide on some places. so we had incredible light when we came to our stop for that day. This past week, I’ve finally been allowed to announce a book deal that I got more than a year ago. It’s made me reflect on how much of being a writer hinges on waiting—to reach the end of the story you’re writing, to receive feedback from beta readers, to find an agent who believes in you enough to offer rep, to score a publisher who likes your manuscript enough to send a contract. By this reckoning, you’d think to be a writer, you must have patience. . I don’t. In fact, my friends often tease me for just how *impatient* I am. So which quality is it a writer should possess, if they are to weather the storm of waiting? Many literary circles have dubbed it endurance. Writing is a marathon, they tell us, not a sprint. And they’re absolutely right, of course. It could take years to finish honing your manuscript into a respectable state. If you’re seeking publication and manage to get a contract one day, it typically takes another 18-24 months before your book is released. And even then, more waiting—for people to discover the book, to read it and perhaps enjoy it enough to recommend it to others. For word of mouth to spread and for hoping, fiercely hoping, that word of mouth is positive. . Still, there’s an emotional requisite to riding out this waiting, one I’m not sure the word endurance captures sufficiently. Merriam Webster defines endurance as “the ability to withstand hardship or adversity.” To withstand—there’s something vaguely passive about that concept, isn’t there? To outlast the things happening to you. It’s admirable for sure, but writers don’t just tolerate challenges as they arise. They see them coming in advance and choose to meet them anyway. . Perhaps, then, the quality I’m searching for is grit. Grit is a “firmness of mind or spirit: unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.” It’s endurance, yes, the capacity to outlast different obstacles in your path. But it’s also determination. An active will to register the obstacles and choose to not let them defeat you. Someone with grit is not only able to endure long delays and inevitable setbacks, but resolutely dedicated to overcoming them. . Réttir ís the annual sheep roundup in Iceland, when the sheep are brought down from the Highlands, and sorted to go back into each individual family farm. It’s a lot of work and these folks (and dogs) are pros!! @evamariaglimmer’s lovely family is letting a bunch of city slickers “help” them this weekend. Exactly one year ago today, I got the call from the Sky Arts team to confirm Id been selected as a heat artist for Landscape Artist of the Year 2019. A beautiful day out to the wild and remote Sanna Bay on the west coast of Scotland. We had the beach pretty much to ourselves for much of the afternoon, and enjoyed a lovely cold swim as the rain passed over and the sun came out. Crystal clear, turquoise water and white sand, a few sheep along the bay to keep us company. We went out this way in part to photograph two wonderful people for the next book and were so happy to discover this beach was nearby! Well worth the long drive on so many levels. The famous Bobbys Bus Shelter in Unst. Could this be the only bus shelter that is also a tourist attraction!? When Bobby was in primary school, the previous shelter was removed, so he wrote to the local paper back in 1996 asking the council to replace it. His letter was published, and a new shelter was soon in place. From there, furniture started to mysteriously appear in it and its been decorated in many different themes over the years.
