I am #thenewchorusgirl, I deserve to book work and I don’t need to change my body type to do so. . . . . I have had a tumultuous relationship with my body, as a lot of dancers do. I’ve been struggling with body dysmorphia for a few years which physically changes how I perceive myself. It used to get particularly bad after auditions. I’m not 120 lbs. I’m not 5’8”. I don’t have a face that books a lot of work. All of the don’ts made me truly believe that I wasn’t capable, worthy, or had the body to book any sort of dance job. And for the most part, I was right. I grew up very low income, I had to do a form of workstudy to earn my tuition to the small ballet school I went to, I couldn’t afford to even audition for the city ballet company’s school. When I moved to New York, I was not a good dancer. I’ve grown leaps and bounds since 3 years ago, but the imposter syndrome is real. . . . . . For too long, I have let the imposter syndrome, the dysmorphia, and the ugly norms of this industry define who I am. For too long I haven’t been taking a stand; for myself, for the womxn who look like me, and for the womxn are different and but treated with the same amount of disdain in casting. I am proud of how far I’ve come, I am a beautiful and strong Latinx-Russian-Eastern European-Jew, and I’m not gonna let anybody tell me that my thick thighs and my tummy make me less of a dancer or human. My worth doesn’t depend on what shape my body is, my worth doesn’t depend on my body of work. And I hope that sometime in the future there’s a day when every dancer can walk into a room and feel that they have a fair shot at being cast. ❤️GRATITUDE! Thanks to all who joined the Livestream yesterday and to all those who are still catching up and watching up to now. Yesterdays TINA show is a mixture of highs and lows, excitement and harsh reality, patience and understanding. Before the pandemic, we had been sooooo spoiled for several years having our own tech crew, light crew and the mere pleasure to have 2 hrs. of soundcheck. My own voice mix and band mix in my in ear monitors. Well, we were given only 15 minutes to plug in everything before the show after the last performers. With a completely new crew with no knowledge of what we needed even with a 3 piece plus tracks was an absolute nightmare... I cant imagine what they would do with an 8 piece when safe distancing is applied on stage. There were bigger bands that followed but we were the first ones... the experiment. It would have been much much easier and faster if Daddy Cool Steve Marshall was with us coz he knows exactly what to do with our Tina mix. With mosquitos or little flying bugs after us while performing and off stage, we were really humbled to just be able to perform for the frontline workers who are bravely risking their health getting infected. And YASSSS... with no big crowd in the huge Maple Ridge fairgrounds, Im pleased to say we rocked it. The story behind this shoe has so much meaning so I felt I needed to share! 🤩💕🇩🇴🦋✨🎉 About two years ago me and two other Latina designers at Converse felt that our heritage deserved more...so we came together and pitched our stories to the Women’s team as a women’s empowerment pack surrounding Latinx heritage month. I started with thinking about the women heroes I looked up to from where I was born — Dominican Republic. 🇩🇴🤩For those who don’t know... In the Dominican Republic “Las Mariposas” or “The Butterflies” was codename for three sisters — Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal — who started a revolution in the 50’s that became the catalyst that eventually led the country to democracy. They are a symbol of feminist resistance that not many outside of the DR know about. As a little girl I was always fascinated by the incredible things they did at the time and how they used their voice to speak up against injustice. Today, there are people in the Latin American Diaspora in the US (including myself) that also identify with the butterfly as a symbol of hope for the displaced. We see ourselves in the monarch butterflies that have migrated through challenging landscapes every year during the change of seasons. I think la mariposa is an impactful metaphor for the resilience, strength, and hope that not only Dominicans have, but also anyone from Latin America who has immigrated to the US and around the globe. I designed a camo pattern out of different types of mariposas found in the Dominican Republic and in Central America. It is a woven jacquard with varying textures that make you want to run your fingers through it. You have to look closely to find all of them. What is exciting is that the way the pattern is woven and cut allows for each shoe to be unique and different from the other. 🦋 We signed the patch with our initial and with a “virgulilla“ sign above it (Ñ). This symbol is a detail from our language of origin that ties us all together. We also all have a patch on the inside of the tongue that says “Para mi gente linda de:” or “For my beautiful people from:” and it allows for the owner to write the place they’re from or identify with.🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🎉 - @ni_cole__jw on Instagram
