The brilliant Nigerian potter Ladi Kwali (c.1925 - 1984) working in her studio: undated photograph. (If you know who shot it, do let me know.) For the latest episode of Bow Down, I absolutely loved talking with the renowned Kenyan / British ceramic artist Magdalene Odundo about her admiration for Ladi Kwali, who taught her in the early 1970s at the Pottery Training Centre that was established by Michael Cardew in Abuja in the 1950s. Ladi Kwali’s portrait now adorns the Nigerian 20 Naira bill - she was the first woman artist to be featured on currency in Africa. Magdalene explains that even now, after almost 50 years, she feels that Ladi Kwali is looking over her shoulder when she’s creating her ceramics. Despite the fact that they spoke different languages - Ladi Kwali spoke Hausa, and Magdalene Swahili and English - they had a productive relationship that revolved around demonstration, laughter and occasionally dancing with joy if a pot was particularly successful. On November 6, 1919, the world’s first scheduled radio broadcast services known as PCGG began in Rotterdam, Netherlands. By the 1920s, half of urban families owned a radio and more than six million stations had been built. In the 1940s, families were listening to their radios hourly. Entertainment like music and sporting events could now be heard by anyone with a radio and gave accessibility to those who could not afford to see live events. The radio greatly impacted African Americans by giving access to entertainment that they were barred from seeing in person due to segregation laws. In the late 1940s, 94 percent of African American homes had at least one radio set, where families would listen to popular broadcasters such as Hal Jackson, who is known as the “first African American announcer on network radio,” as well as the 1940s radio series called Destination Freedom, which aired on a local Chicago NBC station. Destination Freedom was created by Richard Durham who wanted to create a narrative of African American history and bring to light African American poets, journalist, and labor organizers. Not only did radio shows such as Jackson’s and Durham’s provide political and social arguments and narratives, the radio also played an essential role in the Civil Rights Movement, where disc jockeys would relay information through radios on where roadblocks were, where the next boycott was taking place, and in protecting African Americans from misleading propaganda. Presently in 2020, we see the importance and influence of social media, radio, and television in relaying information on how to support one another. It is important to MOAH that our museum continues to show and connect the evolution, influence, and relevance of historic innovations to the technologies and society of the past and present. There are dozens of tiny harbours in Kinshasa. They are all separate concessions. In a country the size of Europe, with limited and poor roads, the rivers are veritable lifelines. Bustling harbours like this one attract sellers, of cigarettes and alcohol, of streetfood or charcoal. Their customers are the crews of the many boats that moor here and the many passengers that board transport ships clandestinely. Jah Bull was an awesome deejay early 70s for EMPEROR MARCUS SOUND. And was exclusive recording artist and deejay for Pablos ROCKERS INTERNATIONAL SOUND and record label. In 2005 Jah Bull was chosen as the lead actor for the Jamaican film ROOTS TIME sadly Jah Bull passed away while the filming was nearly completed.. In honor of Jah Bull I named my radio program ROOTS TIME RADIO. Jah Bull lived in LA for a good while and we became good friends and was a great mentor to me...I wish he was still around..we would be tearing up the sound right now with roots and culture music. If looking at someone’s instagram or following someone on youtube makes you feel less than, unfollow them IMMEDIATELY. Even if it is me. I urge you to unfollow me or whoever it is that makes you feel like your life is not good enough. I am not saying unfollow anyone that might have a life better than you. You can follow them if they somehow inspire you, make you want to work harder, persevere, not give up, learn new things and be the better version of yourself. But if all they do is make you depressed and sad for the life and the things YOU have, simply unfollow. This is you taking care of yourself. Trust me feeling this way, does not make you into a jealous person or a bad person. It is only human to feel those emotions. Research shows that with the creation of social media, more people are depressed than ever before. People didn’t get more jealous. It’s just that with social media, there are more things for people to see and be jealous of. But trust me what you see on social media is not real life. It is people just showing one side of their lives, just showing the best. Because if you posted the bad stuff in your life you would make others sad, right? Wrong! Bare with me I’m getting there. ⠀⠀ I was inspired to write this post after reading a very good book recently. It happens to be a parenting book but I learned so much more than some new parenting techniques. It is called the “Danish Way of Parenting” and I highly recommend everyone to read it. Here’s something from Chapter 3 that was an eye opener for me. ⠀⠀ Did you know that watching movies with a happy ending actually makes you unhappier? And that watching tragedies makes you happier and more grateful for the life you have? We watch happy movies because after a hard day at work we think that watching a happy movie will cheer us up, right? Well, it does just the opposite because we come to expect those perfect happy endings in our lives too. But life is not perfect. It can be hard and unfair. The girl doesn’t always get the guy, the couple doesn’t always stay together, the doctor doesn’t always save the life and the girl doesn’t find her purpose in life. But by... “The end of Biafra is a significant event that I want to cover. I take the first plane to Lagos. And as I do not have a visa, I slip into the delegation of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) led by its Secretary General Diallo Telli and pass through immigration formalities without a hitch. In Lagos, the authorities chartered a plane to take a hundred journalists to the former Biafra. But all the seats on the plane are already taken – the world press is here – and they are expensive. I am penniless and the advance on fees from Jeune Afrique has been exhausted. Regardless, I still go to the airport with the other journalists and head towards the bridge of the plane, as if my name is on the list that an attendant is ticking. When it is my turn, he pretends to look at his list, then beckons to me to enter. Up till today, I still wonder why he did that? I learn that luck is earned” - abbas. The media presence in Biafra between 1970 and 1971 was a very important story for the beginning of photography used by aid agencies. It was the the first time that there was media interest in a story like Biafra, which led to non government organisations like Oxfam and was hugely successful in fundraising, using the pictures coming from agencies. Мало кому известная авария на ЧАЭС, которая произошла 11 октября 1991г. на блоке №2 Чернобыльской АЭС , связанная с пожаром в машзале. В результате аварии разрушились 9 пролетов (54 м) крыши МЗ, частично выведено из строя турбинное оборудование блока №2. Очаг пожара угрожал оборудованию и кабельным коммуникациям систем, важных для безопасности, а обрушение кровли реально повредило оборудование, важное для безопасности. Человеческих жертв не было. Вместе с тем имело место увеличение радиоактивного фона в МЗ (с 0.5-0.7 до 2 мР/ч по γ-излучению и с 80-120 β-частиц/(см2мин) до 400 по β-излучению), что объясняется обрушением кровли, загрязненной еще во время аварии 1986 г. на блоке №4. Суммарный выброс радиоактивных аэрозолей, образовавшихся при горении элементов кровли, в атмосферу составил 0,00036 Ки, что, как и общий выброс во время инцидента, меньше допустимого суточного выброса в атмосферу. Облучения персонала выше контрольных уровней не было. Ликвидаторы пожара (63 человека из числа пожарных и эксплуатационного персонала) получили дозы от 0.02 до 0.17 бэр, что не превышает двухнедельных доз. Произошло некоторое загрязнение поверхностей технологических помещений без превышения допустимого уровня (2000 β-частиц/(см2мин)). Облучения населения не было. Несмотря на отсутствие значительных радиационных последствий этой аварии, горение и разрушение кровли МЗ внешне выглядело подобно печальным событиям на блоке №4 26 апреля 1986 г. I’ve contemplated making this post 1,000 times but Holy Spirit won’t let me shake it. The truth is I’m not perfect , I’m still learning and I’m still growing and truth is I did it. But throughout this whole process God has made so clear what grace and mercy truly is . So if you feel as if you’ve strayed to far , you haven’t. If you feel like you’ve messed up so bad that God doesn’t love you , it’s a LIE. And God is making me that testimony. Yes , I’m not having a baby “God’s way” (based off of some beliefs ) but even through my messups he’s given me purpose to carry. And my daughter is a testament of his love for me. May 14th, 2020.... this was a long but awesome day... (with about 10 miles walked) Started the day at Mt. Sinai working with MARCUM and BurgerFi as they provided lunch to frontline workers (who were so wonderful and appreciative), from there... walked around a few hours capturing some of the people I saw along the way. Met a building doorman on Park Ave and had a fantastic chat (he is also from Florida like me... he is the last pic) Then later headed over to visit friends at LHH for #clapbecausewecare. We must use it.” Confrontation on the Bridge (1975), Jacob Lawrence (African-American, 1917-2000) DESCRIPTION When Jacob Lawrence was commissioned to execute a print to celebrate the United States bicentennial in 1976, he illustrated the March 7, 1965, march by unarmed protesters objecting to the denial of African Americans right to vote. The march began in Selma, Alabama, but before the 600 protesters could reach the state capital in Montgomery, law enforcement officials attacked them with clubs and tear gas as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. John Lewis was the first to be beaten in the clash with state troopers, who cracked his skull with a billy club on the date that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” Lawrence symbolized the malicious and brutal attack by including the vicious dog at the left edge of the scene. Two days later, with court protection, Martin Luther King Jr. led 25,000 marchers to Montgomery. Outraged by the barbarity of the civil rights struggle, the U.S. Congress passed and President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act later that year. Sad day for #F1 yesterday as Sir Frank and Claire Williams stepped down from their roles with @williamsracing after more than 40 years of family involvement in the sport. We’ve shared a lot of nice moments over the years. The first pic is from one of my favourite shoots from 2011. We were in Venezuela but in this pic, Claire and I are mostly concerned that we are flying back over Angel Falls in a storm and they didn’t know if we should turn back or keep going! Hello to all our little snackers out there. This is really hard and bittersweet for us to share, but after two and a half years of sugary joy, Little Debbie and the Crusaders is going on hiatus as I (Liv) move on to college in SLO. We formed this band when we were sixteen and it has truly been the ride of our lives, as cheesy as it sounds. We are so thankful for all the amazing people we have met in the community, and everyone who took a chance on us by booking us, buying merch or hearing us play. We have a few more shows with our supergroup Crush Material, but this is the end of Little Debz for now. This movie has been in my watchlist for almost a year now and I regret for not watching it earlier.. The pathos of the film carried throughout made my heart heavy.. I cant even start to describe how the movie was, without mentioning the protagonist of the film, Zain al Rafeea, who is an actual syrian refugee turned actor. O’Grady created the work as a rebuttal to an acquaintance’s assertion that “avant-garde art doesn’t have anything to do with Black people.” Putting avant-garde art into the largest Black space she could think of with a million viewers of the parade.
